” Pfizer has warned the EU to back down from its threat to block vaccines to the UK because the firm needs crucial ingredients shipped from the UK.
The drugmaker and its partner BioNTech have told Brussels that the UK has the power to retaliate against any export ban by withholding raw materials needed for its jab.
Croda International, a chemicals firm based in Snaith, Yorkshire, has been delivering vital “fatty molecules” to Pfizer’s factories in the EU since signing a five-year contract with the firm in November.
It is one of the few companies in the world able to supply the crucial substance.
Croda told the stock exchange earlier this year that its contract with Pfizer to deliver four ingredients would generate $125 million in sales this year, adding that it was quadrupling the capacity of its UK factory to meet demand.
Pfizer and BioNtech are understood to have warned EU leaders that production at the main vaccine factory in Belgium could “grind to a halt” within weeks if the UK moved to prevent deliveries from crossing the Channel. “

Some good news for Ireland though.
The HSE says it will resume using AstraZeneca today – starting “with a relatively modest number” of people.
If it’s “relatively modest” by existing rollout standards then it’s going to be very very modest indeed.

This is an idea for the 100th anniversary of partition:
It’s been an open secret for weeks of course but any Irish citizen over 50 with an old NHS number from their time in Blighty is full entitled to travel north for a jab.
The only requirement is that when you drive across the border you’re obliged to wind down your car window and shout ” well done Boris and thanks a lot Blighty ” at the top of your voice.
It seems a small price to pay in fairness.

Purveyor of facts and statistics that support your opinion you mean? How come dissenting voices on the vaccine rollout are being ignored or ridiculed? Why don’t the media engage with the likes of Ivor Cummins and Geert Vander Bossche (etc) and address their concerns? Until they do there will always be people too scared too go and get vaccinated. If they could successfully argue against these people they’d get 100% compliance, but instead they will soon be down to issuing threats. I find it amazing the people will gladly take a vaccine, that isn’t and never was considered a vaccine. Who’s makers instantly insisted on a waiver of responsibility from and that is now banned by many EU nations. Would you buy a car that is uninsurable, that some experts say is a death trap and that has been banned in several nations? No you would not. Cognitive dissonance in action.

This is such nonsense. The idea that Susan Mitchell, for example, had her eye on a Government job and was just biding her time at the Sunday Business Post… ludicrous. I’m willing to bet that most of these ex-journos would have been quite happy to continue as journalists but it just wasn’t viable. When did you last buy the Sunday Business Post? I presume these advisory positions end as soon as the politician in question gets booted out, so no security of tenure, hence the salary weighting.
Micko
I have a subscription to the SBP online.
And the IT and the Indo
Why?
Lilly
I wasn’t addressing you specifically, Micko. My point is there aren’t enough subscribing Mickos about to keep print journalism afloat, which is why newspapers continue to contract, spewing people into other sectors. It has nothing to do with them having their eye on the main chance from the outset.
PS – Anyone who subscribes to the Indo has my sympathy.
Micko
Sick burn on the Indo there. Sure ya can’t beat a aul journalism based berating eh?
Anyway, you’re of course right about the politicians when they leave office and the salary weighing of the “journos” they employ.
As we all are painfully aware, the second a politician leaves office, they spontaneously combust into the ether, never to be seen again.
Which I of course think is a terrible waste.
It would be much better when they leave office to employ them with lucrative private industry contracts and places on boards of private companies which they aided during their time in office.
Which of course would be a win win situation for the journalists who helped them along the way, as they would be brought into these private companies as contractors.
It would be a much better system than the “spontaneous combustion” model we have now.
What a terrible waste… :(

I almost feel embarrassed on your behalf for that sanctimonious response.
Question: when one observes that public health advice from a particular group is ill-conceived, myopic, not aligned with real-world evidence, politicised, and contradicted by other credible health experts, would it be ‘stupid’ to still have faith in it regardless?

Today saw a set of coordinated protests in cities around the world. Some of them were massive. Dublin’s was small in comparison. Oh well. It’s not really a consolation, but I suppose when I look back over these times in years to come I’ll at least be able to say I was one of those who took to the streets in some kind of protest as the liberal democratic society which we’d been accustomed to was being rapidly eroded before us

As much as I agree with David Langwallner’s pov on many issues he covers on BS, I was very surprised to hear that he defended John Gilligan in the 90s; of course Gilligan was innocent until proven guilty and he has a right to legal defense and due process, but it seems to go against the grain of a human rights lawyer to represent such a character, or, are some more entitled than others? Why’s the moral compass needle pointing in that direction rather than an other? The deflection from subject to topic was well done though.

Oh, charger is gone, he’s too much of a coward you see.

But who else will keep us informed about the psycho gulls?
And the killer rats…? I’d have thought that someone living in Australia would welcome an early warning system for the rodents. Particularly when this happens: Plague of mice hits parts of rural Australia https://www.rte.ie/news/2021/0319/1204950-australia-mice/
What a wonderful success for the Irish this week at Cheltenham. They’ve demonstrated their talents, their usual superiority both on and off a horse and drained every last penny from the Brits. Have a nice weekend y’all x
And only one horse needed to be euthanized this year. Some sport.
Wonderful.
But you had your fun….
and some…as did many many millions.
That dead horse at Cheltenham – did the Irish contingent queue for a photo op ?
No but the Brits wanted to purchase it to enhance their chances of success for next year.
*back of the net*
As Ireland will still be under lockdown next year waiting for a vaccine it looks like the Cheltenham brassers won’t be seeing any farmyard-smelling euros again.
Poor effort Tommy. Nil points.
Well the crowds were smaller so less call for the lasagna
Was Health Minister Stephen Donnelly at Cheltenham ?
Because he hasn’t been seen anywhere in Ireland this week.
Since Ireland postponed the use of the AZ vaccine his British counterpart Matt Hancock has carried out dozens of media interviews and been cross-examined in Parliament.
And the UK has administered nearly 2.5 million Covid vaccines.
What exactly does Slaphead do with his time ? Count every individual vaccine as it’s given ?
Rumour he has been preparing the groundwork for a move to SF so he may continue his ministerial career after the next GE!
He may be inept… but

The Sun – “Win Westlife Tickets”… should read “Be Inflicted with Westlife Tickets”
My word, was it really 28 years ago today the IRA blew up two innocent boys in Warrington.
Johnathan Ball, three, and schoolboy Tim Parry, 12.
My heart goes out to their parents.
https://twitter.com/ColinParryPeace
Dear Mr and Mrs Ball and family,
I goad and scoff every day on an Irish website. I was wondering if I could use the memory of your little fellow Johnathan in one of my bits?
While I’m on, do you have contact details for the Parrys?
Thanks in advance,
Charger
@Pat, nail on the head. Disgusting behaviour from the bigot in residence.
Your heart? That black, infested congealed mass of bigotry?
That one? Keep it, I’d say.
Eh, why did you delete my comment Bodger?
Funny old agenda
(ADMIN SEZ: sorry Pat, reinstated above, accidental deletion I’m sure)
Richard Curran grilled Dee Forbes on The Business this morning. As usual she complained about being under-funded. One for Frilly.
The grilling or the under funding?
Goad and scoff ?
I’m just a humble purveyor of facts and statistics gleaned from publicly-available data that deserves to be brought before a wider audience.
Ignorance is no defence in the court of human life.
And no need for contact details for the Parry family.
Tim’s parents turned a personal tragedy into a life-affirming quest for peace and reconciliation and bravely met McGuinness and Adams who would have okayed the bombing operation that killed their son.

Crocodile tears from a coward.
Is this going to be another attempt on your record for the number of posts in a single day about me and nothing else ?
It currently stands at 32.
You must have been in some state at the end of that day.
Like a damp dishcloth I’d say.
Whine, whine, whine.
Off your knees, boy.
Dear lord. You actually keep records and statistics of people’s posts? I suspect the Gards in Cork have you on their ‘weirdo’ radar. It’s also crazy ironic that you accuse others of posting frequently when your entire day is spent hanging on certain individuals words and posting like a madman last thing at night and first thing in the morning.
In times gone by a lad like you would just be quietly moved on to a parish in another diocese…
I suspect that’s why the tan is living in Ireland.
I suspect you may not be too far away from the truth.
This is one of my favourite insults ever seen on broadsheet.
32 posts?
32 points.
32 counties.
32 Charger IQ points.
Oh dear, watch him run run run away.

The sun is out.
The clouds are gone.
The skies are clear.
Why am I still paying attention to ‘you know who’?
Good question…
I propose a curfew.
PS.
I love that guy.
I envy his/her position.

Have ya seen this? The link between RTE, the press and politicians.
https://youtu.be/eZFH_zFy2kg
We all know it goes on, but to see it laid out like all in one place. Yikes. The money changing hands is mental!
I know that some may question the source, but it makes for interesting viewing either way.
Similar relationships exist in Australia. That Gript channel has a lot of stuff I disagree with.
I’m the same formerly, lots of dodgey stuff there and it’s obv politically motivated to cause disruption and to get people on side with them.
But even a stoped watch is right twice a day… etc etc
No it isn’t, do you not understand the concept of time? A stopped clock is not fulfilling the basic function of a timepiece which is to accurately record the passage of time. So it’s not “right”, twice a day: it just gives that misleading impression to people like you who lack the critical faculties to fully evaluate the issue.
You’re dead right.
That’s the important issue here.
My correct or incorrect use of the “stopped watch” analogy.
Christ… pedant much?
If you can even get the basics of grammar so bottomways how we can take seriously a single other thing you say is a mystery.
Ooooooooooooooooh
So yer a grammar Nazi as well as a Time Nazi eh Unreal?
Hmmm. ‘Time Nazi’…
That gives me an idea for a book.
To the library!!!!
I have a subscription to the SBP online.
And the IT and the Indo
Why?
I wasn’t addressing you specifically, Micko. My point is there aren’t enough subscribing Mickos about to keep print journalism afloat, which is why newspapers continue to contract, spewing people into other sectors. It has nothing to do with them having their eye on the main chance from the outset.
PS – Anyone who subscribes to the Indo has my sympathy.
What a terrible waste… :(
#WontSombodyThinkOfThePolitcians
I didn’t mean to berate you for buying the Indo, it was more a comment on the paper. I’m genuinely mystified as to why anyone would pay for it.
Ah I’m only winding you up back Lilly. Yer grand. ;)
In fairness on the Indo – it’s not great alright, but I have a subscription to most of the Irish papers for my business.
I do like the SBP though.
What’s your business micko?
I hope you’re not a jeweller or a doctor
Nice one Micko!

Closing tomorrow. Have your say about RTE.
Broadcasters don’t listen.
It’s written on the tin.
Thanks for this link, Giggs. I filled it out but there were a few annoying optional addendums at the end and no submit button at each stage (to hit if you decided not to give the extra info) so I’m not even sure if it went. They should have had a submit button before each addendum and an acknowledgment that it had been successfully submitted.
As it was, I just closed it half-way through the second addendum and was left hoping that their system grabbed the inputted data and that I hadn’t wasted my time. As with a lot of things RTE do, it wasn’t very satisfactory. I also wish I’d read Vanessa’s January rundown here before filling it it as I would have left additional comments in the freestyle section, such as get some new blood on your board of directors.
Nice one Micko!

And don’t feel bad about it, seriously, you are actually helping the UK by doing this… and in any event Ireland will be first on their list for spares, it’s in their interest….so get it into ya!

Blind nationalism turns you into a cretin… there’s a lot of it about these days, ’tis more contagious than Covid
Ah, now, that’s not fair. There’s mysogyny, clear racism, ageism and a host of other ailments that plague our troll. Obesity and thinking he has friends are merely the scab over the smelly rot underneath.

Disturbing footage taken earlier today of a young woman crying out in pain as she’s rough-handled by a group of gardai. Just prior to that, the woman had taken part in today’s anti-lockdown march in the city centre. From what I saw in another clip, she was was one of those who sat in protest on a street along the quays towards the end stages of the march
“I can’t breathe! I can’t breathe!”
https://twitter.com/Tilly_Fizz/status/1373325765857656838
“Roughhanded”? She was trying to escape them. If she could loudly scream I can’t breathe, then she could breathe.
Hard to believe that’s your genuine response after watching that video. Don’t you have any empathy at all? The young woman is clearly in a lot of pain and distress
Bit like the pain and distress, gasping for air as a person dies from Covid that somebody with a pre-exisiting condition caught from an idiot who wouldn’t ware a mask?
Lockdowns are stupid and point to a failed government, endangering people by gathering and/or not following public health advice because the government is bad … is also stupid
The only conspiracy theory worth listening to…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hW9cCWm53H4
I almost feel embarrassed on your behalf for that sanctimonious response.
Question: when one observes that public health advice from a particular group is ill-conceived, myopic, not aligned with real-world evidence, politicised, and contradicted by other credible health experts, would it be ‘stupid’ to still have faith in it regardless?
So there’s no mass protest movement containing enough hardy men to storm the gardaí lines and rescue the damsel in distress? Skulking and muttering and surreptitiously filming is hardly action enough to win anyone a Cogadh na Saoirse medal. And if I was on the awarding body I wouldn’t be accepting tweets or other social media posts as proof of valour either. For all their bluster I’d say that ‘the resistance’ is a beaten docket.
Hmm my comment disappeared ..not sure if it was because I edited it after posting or otherwise. I’ll give it one more go..

Today saw a set of coordinated protests in cities around the world. Some of them were massive. Dublin’s was small in comparison. Oh well. It’s not really a consolation, but I suppose when I look back over these times in years to come I’ll at least be able to say I was one of those who took to the streets in some kind of protest as the liberal democratic society which we’d been accustomed to was being rapidly eroded before us
…you can hope that the ratlickers aren’t around in years to come…they might just decide that you have lived long enough…
Solicitors can’t refuse to represent someone (I think). Didn’t Jim O’Callaghan represent Gerry Adams?
Only if they have a conflict of interest
I’ve no idea about O’ Callaghan-Adams so I can’t comment, but what I alluded to in my post above is what you’ve just defined – to ‘represent’ someone. It’s long been known that Gilligan (I’m using JG as an example because David referred to him in TT), was/is a criminal since the 80s with multiple convictions, one of which is for murder; is it discretionary or dichotomous for *any* barrister of human rights to represent a drug dealing, murdering criminal?
Do ethics or morals have a price, or is it just a case of being pragmatic and getting the client off, ironically at all costs?
steph it is the act that was and is the problem not mr gilligan
