This day 126 years ago – 22 March 1895 – the body of Bridget Cleary was found in Tipperary, having been burned by her husband, Michael.
Michael Cleary claimed the women he had killed was not his wife, but a changeling left by fairies. He subsequently served 15 years in prison. pic.twitter.com/r3vA8AqzWb

Take him away with his fairies.

This reminds me, the other Michael Cleary was our old parish priest. What a pox bottle he was.

Cheers Otis, you deserve a voucher for finding that :)
Catholic tastes, so to speak.
Now that’s unfair, Otis – in any speak.
I could have made some cheap shots myself over the course of this evening, but, I refrained.
…MaryLou is definitely a changeling…FFer to shinner…in fact…when you think of it…the Dail is full of changelings…
There aren’t many true stories about horrific torture and murder that prompt jokes, I wonder why this one?
Because she was a witch, Nigel.

No. They thought she was a fairy.
Transsexual homophobia even back then.
You’re trying too hard.
This thread deserves my effort.
Wrong sort of tragic.
Please direct me to the next post-tragic booth, Nigel.

We were serious about women being murdered last week, it’s done now and we’re back to laughing about men killing women and getting ridiculously short sentences for it.
Yeah, because that’s what’s happening here, Dandelion.
And then it was heavily edited to remove the Synge/singe “joke”
The Synge family lodged a formal complaint, I’m sure.
The man did burn the woman back in 1895 – all his neighbours stood by and watched it.
It was a public event and a matter of public record, according to court and official records.
Nick’s editing had nothing to do with the content of the story, just the reaction to it.
Journalistic integrity.
The last changeling murder case in Ireland took place in the 20th century, believe it or not. Look it up.
I always found it interesting that they would disguise little boys as girls to protect them from fairy abduction, leaving a changeling child in his place, apparently the faerie don’t put much stock in baby girls….so little boys in dresses, one theory is that autism is more marked in young boys and the changeling explained this behavior.
You might enjoy this.

thanks Otis ! I did, powerful stuff
Original thread title:
‘No Changeling There Then’ – denial of the supernatural.
‘Ball and Changeling’ – domestic slavery and abuse.
Make up your minds you populist cowards.
Shut yer fuppin pie hole
Not when the truth is so sweet.
Is it? Strikes me as a bit dry and pedantic.
But then again, it will set you free. Or so I hear. Let me know how it goes.
Sorry, Millie, I don’t like to talk when my mouth is full.
Your mother raised you right.
That’s what his ma said
Hubert Butler wrote a superb piece about this demented killing, The Eggman and the Fairies.
Angela Bourke’s ‘The Burning of Bridget Cleary’ is probably the best book that’s been written about this appalling story.
speaking of changelings
