I’m told that even if the party passes such a motion it has no bearing on Ms Chu’s role in the party as motions of no confidence only apply to the leader. Sources also suspect Patrick Costello may be prevented from voting as Ms Chu is his partner.

This evening.
Anyone?
Earlier…
Hazel Chu says, even though she’s contesting a Seanad by-election as an independent, she’ll take the Green whip “as long as I’m still a member”. Says she contested the election because there were no other female candidates for the Industrial & Commercial Panel pic.twitter.com/oQapdNEJB9

This morning
Meanwhile…
Eamon Ryan refused to comment if Hazel Chu would remain chairwoman of the Green Party after Chu to run independently for Seanad By-Election.
The GP decided they would not run a candidate for the two Seanad seats.
Ryan also said that he will not vote for Chu.

Um.
Yesterday: Green Rebellion
Meanwhile…
I abhor that @hazechu experiences racism. But people on the left shouldn’t support women or minorities regardless: Hazel is Chair of @greenparty_ie, wants to stay in it when others have left & praises work of GP ministers. Feminising the elite is not breaking status quo. #TodayCB

Let he who is without yezzys cast the first stone.
Fecking hell.. those shoes (!!) are not cheap.. or environmentally friendly I suspect.. they also look ridiculous on her.. passing that comment on for a friend…
made by the finest organic children
I love the spin you put on the headline – well done bodger
I think she should Chu the fat on it first
she may have bitten off more than she can chu.
Meh. If she can pull it off, go for it, I say. FF/FG are a solid block of dead weight on the body politic, some odd shapes are sure to come out of trying to wriggle around it.
The poor, poor woman just wants a better, more lucrative cabin on the political gravy train.
She has not so subtly managed to drag alleged racial and gender oppression to the front and center of her campaign. Very little is said about what else she could potentially offer in the role, but that doesn’t matter because after all politics is a participation game….. after all competence is overrated and is so last century!
We truly are led by the least among us
There is a part of me that appreciates the grift!
before you criticise her, try walking a mile in her chus.
All true…. she’ll fit in perfectly as a Senator.
a chu in, you might say.
Schrödinger’s Green.
Nice
HA!
Post Of The Week!
Deuteranomaly.
Contesting something because there were no other female candidates seems to be an odd statement. Shouldn’t we always be looking for the best candidates regardless of gender, ethnicity or race? Where there any other female candidates even interested in the position? Imagine running a company this way? Just hiring people on identity primarily and qualifications or experience secondary, you would be lucky if it did not lead to much worse results. People should be hired on merit as by far the most valuable attribute. If the absolute best candidate is female, or of different ethnicity, then that’s great! Their hard work has earned them that position.
Greater female representation in politics is as good and valid a platform as any.
Perhaps we should demand that 30% of elected male TDs identify as female.
Problem solved.
You do that.
Just trying to keep up.
Thinking outside the box – no rote learning here.
Try your best.
Careful now, you’ll have the wrath of the all knowing always correct Nige down on you for wrong-think… too late.
Ah hear, now Junkface come on.
You have to take Hazel’s gender and ethnicity into account.
She hasn’t had the same opportunities as other people you know.
What’s that…?
Boarding school you say?
Finished in the institute of education you say?
Studied politics and history at UCD you say?
Got her law degree at Kings Inns you say?
Called to the bar in 2007 you say?
Worked for lots of well known businesses like Bord Bia, Diageo etc you say?
Sounds like Hazel has had tons of opportunities in her life.
And fair play to her – everyone should have the same opportunities.
But to portray herself as a poor woman from an ethnic minority who “never had a chance” in the cruelest male dominated world is utter balls.
‘But to portray herself as a poor woman from an ethnic minority who “never had a chance” in the cruelest male dominated world is utter balls.’
And of course, she did not do that.
Not been following Hazels political career then.
Ok cool
Followed it enough to know she gets plagued by preening edgelords who say stuff like that about her and to her, and far far worse.
+1 Nigel.
I don’t really like her decision at the moment, and I can’t stress how disappointed I am by the greens (again) – strikes me as opportunistic – and if she jumps ship, well let’s just say I’m sorry Vinnie B isn’t around to rake her over the coals for it, just like Stephen Donnelly when he left the SD for FF. But, that said, I don’t think she’s the type to pull that sob story narrative – especially when these things are so easy to check nowadays. Anyways, it didn’t work for Joan Burton, who really did have a rough start, so I can’t see it working for Hazel either.
It all seems very messy, that’s all I know for sure.
In my opinion to contest anything because there are no female candidates is completely inappropriate.
The lord mayor should not contest the empty Seanad Seats simply to to put a female in one them; it’s a waste of an appointment.
without getting into the finer points
particularly what’s contained in Ruth Coppinger’s quoted tweet above
and I stand over what I posted yesterday (?) – that the Lord Mayor is making a poor and hasty decision
WTF are the Green Party at by not running Candidates anyway
Like, how the jaysus do they expect to develop new Candidates or establish themselves more firmly as a Party of Government
Because they’re going to get wiped out at the next election, since that’s how Irish politcs rolls? Everyone slagging off FF/FG for their policies and incompetencies but its the Greens that are going to get stomped, just for taking a chance to do their thing.
Trust me, I won’t be voting or giving any preference to the Green Party and that’s based on their own merits. It is the last party I would vote for. Couldn’t govern a cathouse.
Good for you!
But Nidgie
Isn’t that the very reason they should run Candidates
Blood new ones like, and give them a National run out
While they have some veneer of being in Government
And have the use of Ministers
I don’t know, Frill, I was being sarcastic.
Ah right
Kinda lost touch with ye all
So I just can’t tell anymore
Ah, it’s okay, I always sound like that when it’s Irish politics.
she is probably loving this. and as a politician this is great for her.
she is taking a stand against the established party, has the non irish ethnicity and seems to be playing the feminist card.
you will hear more of her for years to come. potentially uachtarain na heireann.
The Greens are getting more and more ridiculous – they want to be in opposition to the to the government they are in, and can’t even keep their elected officials on-message (nevermind their members).
…who’s message would that be Bog_R?
Hazel who?
Anti- senatism in the Greens.
V. good :)
The comment section on this website has morphed into the journal, which frankly is kind of sad.
I can’t tell who’s serious and who’s taking the wee.
What’s with the RED children’s boots Ms Chu is wearing?
Are they a hat tip to the CCP?
She likes to sleep at night with reds under the bed.
