Don’t riot.

Write.

This morning/afternoon.

The Irish Council for Human Rights [a non-governmental, non-profit organisation founded last year] writes:

The next vote to extend the Health (Preservation and Protection and Other Emergency Measures in the Public Interest) Act 2020 must take place before June 9.

If it is not extended, all restrictions around freedoms (with the exception of mandatory quarantine upon entry into the state) will cease.

We therefore have a window of eight weeks inside which to lobby TDs to vote against the extension of Part 3 of the Act.

If we are successful, this would mean that on June 10 all businesses and churches could legally reopen, you will no longer be legally required to wear face coverings, the Gardai will no longer be able to question you under this Act as to your movements, limits will no longer apply to weddings or funerals and you can once again visit with family and friends without fear of being arrested and jailed.

As part of this campaign, we have reviewed the voting records of all TDs for the past seven months in order to determine which TD’s would seek to preserve your fundamental freedoms and which TD’s would seek to exercise more control over your family, your business, your health and your life. Please click here if you would like to review this spreadsheet of information – noting that your TD’s do not expect you to be armed with this information.

You will note that the spreadsheet stipulates which TD’s we recommend that you lobby (noting that recommended TDs are colour coded in green and yellow). For each of the TDs we are recommending you lobby, we have prepared individual letters which specifically addresses each such TD’s voting record (please, therefore, do not use the same letter for every TD).

We would also encourage you to edit the letter to address any specific concerns or experiences you have encountered over the past 12 months arising from the erosion of your freedoms.

This campaign has the single biggest chance of reversing the erosion of fundamental freedoms in the shortest space of time, but to stand any chance of success, we need thousands and thousands of people to write to their TD’s today and to persevere over the next eight weeks, until an assurance is secured that they will vote not to extend Part 3 of the Act.

”….which TD’s would seek to exercise more control over your family, your business, your health and your life.”

Seems a tad alarmist, ah, I see it’s a fancy name for a schister’s lobby group, fair enough.

    1. Clampers Outside

But, but, didn’t “alarmists” already say these restrictions were going to be with us forever… Now hearing there was a time limit, which may be extended again… with a time limit….

Alarmists to the left of me, Alarmists to the right, here I am stuck in the mid… *aaahatchooool!*

Does this count an endorsement of this organisation?

Nowhere on their website does it provide a rationale for ignoring the threat to public health posed by covid. A blanket assertion of a concern for human rights and personal freedom should not be sufficent, in a situation where we are in the midst of a pandemic, to garner blind support for a newly minted organisation. Do they reject the reality of the threat entirely, and therefore all measures taken in the name of public health? Do they support the state taking any emergency measures that they do not view as threats to human rights?

The various letters and forms are borderline soverign citizen stuff. As a parent of disabled children it’s contemptible to see a form letter for simply declaring a child to be disabled to get out of wearing a mask. If the mask is causing a genuine difficulty for a non-disabled child, surely a discussion with the child’s teacher is in order. Using disability and the health of your child to make an obnoxious political point to schools already under enormous pressure is narcissism.

Anyway, since you are endorsing and promoting this, I hope you’ve done some sort of basic journalistic due diligence about the organisation, who is funding it and who is running it? One hates to be cynical about such things, but these are the times we live in, after all.

      1. Nigel

Renua? *takes a long swig from a filthy bottle of bath-tub poteen* There’s a name I haven’t heard in a while.

      2. Nigel

‘On Twitter, Flanagan, who’s an economist by training, describes herself as a traditional Catholic and as pro-life. She’s argued there’s “absolutely no robust scientific evidence” that lockdown measures affect the spread of COVID. Flanagan has suggested that illnesses caused by electromagnetic interference could be mistaken for COVID symptoms.’

‘Morrissey, who is a registered GP… (told attendess at a rally that) he prescribed hydroxychloroquine to patients infected with COVID-19.’

‘Mr. O’Mahony, a former member of the Irish Defence Forces, was previously a member of Renua… He made headlines when he stated that young children would be taught about masturbation if sex education was updated in Irish schools.’

        Ah, lads. Lads.

        1. K. Cavan

There is not a shred of scientific evidence to support Lockdowns, how could there be, do you think any scientist would ever have been insane enough to investigate the effects of such a bizzare & unprecedented scenario? Chloroquine has been proven to inhibit 229E, a Human Coronavirus, therefore a close relative of Sars02, in lab cultures. Argumentum ad hominem & ad ignoratium, this is pretty weak debating, even before you start ranting about Masturbation.

I am in Melbourne. We had a 112-day lockdown during 2020. We went from 600 cases a day to zero. The lockdown worked with closed borders. The lockdown is of limited value if you leave the borders open to all.

      3. K. Cavan

Daisy, this isn’t a court, no journalist is required to ensure that there’s nothing connected to any group, organisation or person they feature in a story that might offend or bother the sensibilities of anyone. Grow up & get over yourself.

        1. Daisy Chainsaw

I posted a link which caused you to have a complete hissy fit over it. Is it because it shows Tracey and her “human rights” org up as a bunch of racists pulling a scam? Is that why you’re in such a snit?

Maybe try following your own advice!

    1. K. Cavan

No, Nigel, it’s a report, not an endorsement, please put the rhetoric away, it’s childish & tiresome. In mid-January, at the peak of this Pandemic (& the peak of Flu Season) there were 2,000 people hospitalised. That’s 17% of our hospital beds, not very Pandemic-like, TBH but let’s give the Government the benefit of the doubt for & accept this as the peak of A Pandemic. As of last night, the numbers hospitalised has reduced by about 90%, with a total of 182 people hospitalised, about 3 of every 200 beds occupied by victims of Covid. It’s a stretch to see January as a Pandemic, it’s utter nonsense to claim that nothing has changed since & that we’re still in the midst of a pandemic, but you persist with this nonsense. We have almost 5 million people in lockdown because of 182 hospitalisations, every day puts us closer to total economic collapse, if we’re not already done for, health services have basically been withdrawn for anyone relying on the HSE, it’s a complete & utter disaster that’s now turning into a farce, under the worst Government we’ve ever had the misfortune to be blighted with. Mountains & molehills, Nigel, are not the same. If there ever was any justification for this nonsense, it’s long, long gone.

      1. Nigel

There is no ‘report’ aspect of this, and I’m not sure why you’re mad at me for calling it an endorsement when Bodger doesn’t even bother to deny it and you whoeheartedly agree with it. Nobody is calling this the ‘peak’ of the pandemic, unless you’re in India or Brazil, why are you lying about that? Everyone’s looking forward to vaccime roll-out and the end of lockdown and you’re here having a meltdown.

  3. Zaccone

Fair play to them. I’d love if they succeeded. I’m not anti-lockdown – measures were absolutely needed at times, ie January, when our health system was actually in danger of being overrun. And when almost nobody had been vaccinated.

But by mid-June there’ll be no excuse for the government to still be impinging on civil liberties. The vulnerable will be long fully vaccinated, and the health service will be under no strain. If we can’t return to normal life then we never will.

I’d guess it’ll be a struggle to convince government TDs of that though…

  4. Formerly known as @ireland.com

I am in Melbourne. We had a 112-day lockdown during 2020. We had all the nutters – mostly RWNJ’s and Murdoch hacks – complaining about the lockdown. “Dictator Dan” (our state premier, of Labor) wanted to take away your rights, loved being in control, was part of the great reset, hated freedom, etc., etc. Well, the lockdown worked. We have had over 50 days since our last case of community transmission. We finished the big lockdown in November. Guess what, #dictatordan didn’t want to take away our freedoms, didn’t keep restrictions longer than was needed, isn’t part of the great reset. The only restrictions still in place are that we have to wear masks on public transport and some occupancy limits in live venues. So, Ireland should work to beat the virus. I don’t think Michael or Leo are capable of being part of any conspiracy to take away your rights. I just hope they can beat the virus.

    1. Kim The Cardassian

Don’t forget the huge obstacle you have in Australia of mandatory quarantine.

        1. Zaccone

“harder”? Its a land border with 400~ odd crossings that 60,000 people a day cross. That politically, logistically and legally can’t be closed.

The border with NI currently has 60 times the traffic entering the country that Dublin airport does. Every day. And without even a negative covid test required to enter, unlike Dublin airport.

“Impossible” would be a more accurate word to use.

          1. Formerly known as @ireland.com

Understood. A two island approach so Arlene was agreeing with London, rather than Dublin might work. It is just another reason to get rid of the border as soon as the British allow Irish people to decide our future.

        2. K. Cavan

Nobody has sequenced multiple Sars02 genomes & complied the huge quantity of information that would be required to make the ridiculous, scaremongering claims that proliferate when the MSM morons address the subject of Variants. Some Coronaviruses have very few variants, 229E, for example is known for it’s genetic stability, others, like OC43, have 29, as far as we know. In reality, nobody is interested in variants, they all present clinically exactly the same & are just as likely to be less deadly or less infectious than more. Although Coronaviruses are among the most stable, all viruses mutate but their genome is so physically tiny that they haven’t got the Genetic Space to mutate to a meaningful degree.

          1. Nigel

This seems like a lot of shouting just to say that variants exist and can be deadlier and more infectious, s if we didn’t already know this, while seeming to deny it at the same time?

    2. K. Cavan

You claim causation for Lockdown in the ending of your pandemic, where only correlation exists. Australia & New Zealand still have huge State Capacity, most of Europe had this capacity removed by Austerity to pay for Europe’s still-indigent Finance Sector & the entirely different locations, climate & geography mean we’re happy for you but what happened down under is irrelevant, for those of us who live elsewhere.

  5. goldenbrown

I’d never heard of this ICHR up till just now.

Is this a company advertisement/promotion Broadsheet Bodger? you do know they’re a company, right?

ye seem to be very aligned to it anyway. I think I’ll give it a pass, lol.

  6. Joe

Broadsheet Bodger should, really should, do a little bit of basic journalism and fact checking rather than blankly promote a business like ICHR.

Promoting trash like a company with the name of ICHR with its anti health propaganda during a pandemic is contemptible.

    1. Commenter #1

Broadsheet Bodger should, really should, do a little bit of basic journalism and fact checking rather than blankly promote a business like ICHR.”

Broadsheet Bodger did all of this. And they’re he’s fine with it.

        1. Commenter #1

Lol careful with those usernames, “Bodger.” Easy to get mixed up when you’re rattled, I’m sure.

        2. Nigel

Performative concern for civil liberties and obnoxious edgelordism is a self-cancelling combination.

      1. Formerly known as @ireland.com

Sorry, Ivor the idiot deserves no platform. He can stick to twitter and patreon.

  7. Rosette of Sirius

So what kind con job has Bodger got Broadsheet wrapped up into now?

Nonprofit you say? Seeking donations online?!

Where’s their charity number and their entry on the the Register of Charities? Who are their Trustees?!

They have two directors listed to a limited company – a husband and wife or siblings I imagine given they both have the same surname.

A nonprofit that does not make.

Something stinks here. But hey, it’s your money should you choose to give them any of it.

    1. Commenter #1

“They have two directors listed to a limited company – a husband and wife or siblings I imagine given they both have the same surname. ”

Per a link to the Beacon upthread, they’re siblings.

    1. K. Cavan

+100% It’s startling, isn’t it? Guffing on about “due diligence”, so upset that anyone dares question their agenda. Rushing off to Google the subject of the story, searching for something to get bothered about, anything but engage with reality. Maybe they all attend the same creche, possibly government-run? Somebody needs to make with the pacifiers, pronto. On the other hand, it’s hard not to chuckle at their ultra-sensitivity, it could indicate that it’s (slowly) dawning on them that they’ve been had. And how. Lol.

  8. goldenbrown

    Broadsheet
you appear to be experiencing some kind of a General Protection Fault
could be either be hardware or software
try to reboot the system please, F9 at the logo
select and run the full system diagnostics option in the bios
call us back with the results

    thanks

      1. goldenbrown

well it appears there are quite systemic flaws here Rosette…

reading back on some of the history here it seems Broadsheet has in the past provided quite the platform for Ms. Gemma O’Doherty?

        yikes

        1. Daisy Chainsaw

To be fair, Gemma had a platform and support here before she went full public conspiraloon, god bothering, bigot. I even contributed to the Mary Boyle documentary fund.(I blame the chemtrails!)

    1. Anti Bots

Hey bot, not a word about the RA bots. Seriously, that must be embarrassing. Serbia , no less. Would they be your cousins for drugs, people and human trafficking. Oh sorry, we guys don’t do that. Do you pay them in euro or sterling? Criminals. And yet you give out about everyone, with silly names, just like Trump. 2 faced or what?

      1. GiggidyGoo

Must be some truth in it if you took the time to reply. I wouldn’t have put you down as one of the ‘Even if it is true, I won’t believe it because [insert name here] has said it.’

        1. Nigel

Logically, ‘Must be some truth in it if you took the time to reply’ is as obviously fallacious as your straw man. You may continue to not put me down as that, because I did not say that.

        2. K. Cavan

I think you hit the nail on the head, there, Giggidy. The first one up left the game in a huff, even took his ball with him.

  9. K. Cavan

I’m seeing a lot of comments here attacking an organisation that’s urging people to write to their TDs. Anyone who’d object to voters lobbying their Public Representatives clearly has a problem with the normal functioning of a Democratic society. What manner of a person would find such perfectly normal Democratic methods abhorrent? Fascists, certainly, Nazis, of course, Authoritarians, for sure, Totalitarians, definitely. If I’ve excluded the Anti-Democratic grouping you feel you belong to, please let me know & I’ll add you in later. Ok?

    1. Nigel

People disagree with and criticise individuaks and organisations who write to and lobby TDs all the time. One would go so far as to call it part of a normal functioning democracy, Whereas demonising those who criticise people with an agenda they disagree with? Fascists, certainly, Nazis, of course, Authoritarians, for sure, Totalitarians, definitely. If I’ve excluded the Anti-Democratic grouping you feel you belong to, please let me know & I’ll add you in later. Ok?

      1. K. Cavan

So, Nigel, you “disagree with & criticise people who write to & lobby TDs”? That’s good to know.

  10. Micko

Everyone pile on Bodger for thinking different and being worried that populist politicians might prolong this thing to make their lives easier!!!!

Yeah – that always works. Never in the history of mankind has that ever gone wrong.

    EVER!!!

Incidentally and quite unconnected, I was down at Dun Laoghaire the weekend down by the round tower. The weather was great and everyone one was out having fun. Lots of families out for the craic.

Then a Garda car drove past the crowd – very slowly down that lane.

Lots of people almost froze. The tension in the air was palatable.

    Totally normal…

    1. Formerly known as @ireland.com

I think the Irish government is not handling the virus well. Not for a moment do I think that the lockdown is winning them votes or making their life easier.

      1. Micko

        Ha!

I’d say the removal of the tender process for gov contracts both here an in the UK has made the lots of dosh.

But yeah, they’re interested in our votes.

*Cough* 14.1 million taxpayer money to ROQU *cough*

  11. U N M U T U A L

    Yikes bodger!..
    That’s some dogpile you’ve incited there… Positively rabid….;-)

When you think about it… It must be difficult for some seeing the ‘ordinary’ people out and about living their lives, not obeying the rules…flying in the face of science.
Quite understandable really, considering how much time some people spent painting themselves into a corner on this issue.

The righteous in all this were never going to consider any other view on lockdowns yet alone reform their position as the reality of the stats unfolded.
It’s a year later and no amount of miraculous masks or holy sanitiser can protect them from the covid heretics before them. The pious conformity in here is reaching zenith levels and would put archaic catholicism in the haypenny place.

If being branded a conspiracist is the best they can through up, well then consider yourself the mulder to their scully… Their proof is out there!…but it’s a bitter pill to swallow…

Last time I checked this was your house…
You do you… I think they’re already done!
    Keep it Lit…

    1. Formerly known as @ireland.com

There is a highly contagious virus. There is limited hospital capacity, people are dying. I think it is OK to react to that, not pretend it doesn’t exist.

      1. ce

Dad auld dose going around in Brazil and Indian… but sure t’will all be grand just a bit of flu

    2. K. Cavan

Back of the net! They must feel bad to realise they’re such patsies. They’ll double down until their position is untenable, then it’ll be time for a team of therapists & deprogrammers to ease them, step by step, back into the real world. Full recovery from such delusional behaviours are rare, we shouldn’t expect too much & they clearly weren’t the sharpest tools in the box to start off with.

  12. Unreal

    I agree with unmutual

I don’t agree with the conspiracy people at all
However I respect the fact that people question the unending stream of BS and propaganda from the usual outlets. You’d all be the first ones to cry if John gave up on this for the amount of crap from serial abusers and the boring circle jerk regulars who think they own the place that he and his team colleagues have to wade through daily on this, you should be more grateful
