Fine Gael’s Maria Byrne (left) and Fianna Fáil’s Gerry Horkan
This afternoon.
In the Seanad by-elections.
Via RTÉ:
Fianna Fáil’s Gerry Horkan was elected to the Industrial and Commercial Panel, receiving 114 first preference votes and was elected on the first count, with the quota set at 101.5.
Green Party Chairperson Hazel Chu, who contested the election as an independent, got 10 votes.
Fine Gael’s Byrne, from Limerick, won a seat on the Agriculture Panel receiving 118 votes, finishing well ahead of Independent candidate Ian Marshall, who got 69 votes
Democracy.
It’s a beautiful thing.

Meanwhile…
People have asked, was it worth the fuss for coming last? Absolutely. We need to put women & minorities at the table. We need to show anyone can run for any election. We need every party to run candidates in future that want to contribute and that represents society. Thanks all x

time for another referendum to get rid of this waste of space – surely the people can’t be duped a second time (well, of course they can, but it’s worth a try).
If all it takes to get elected in one of those cases is 114 first preference votes then it’s a pretty elitist pool of candidate and voter.
10 Votes. As much as I hate FF FG I do love the 10 votes. A smack in the face for the woke Govt scaffolding Greens. Someone tell Eamon.
Nah – nothing to do with wokery, a term over-deployed of late. Chu well knew she hadn’t a hope and the Greens would not go renegade. I just don’t get the fuss over a auld Seanad seat. I would were it a Dáil or EP seat but all that nonsense over the Seanad?!
Wasn’t the Seanad earmarked for reform? Will the Seanad Reform Bill ever even get off the ground?
Still, while I do not have anything against Hazel Chu who is probably well-intentioned and knew she hadn’t a hope – all that fuss over 10 votes?!
And somehow, the wheels keep on turning.

Very sad to see Hazel fail once again, in her ongoing challenge to not actually tweet about race, diversity or gender for a single bloody day.
Keep up the good fight Hazel – we know you’d be able to do it someday. :)
I know next to nothing about her but what I have always felt is that she is a bit of a political opportunist. No harm aren’t they all to one degree or another aren’t they. The bang of hypocrisy from her when she virtue signalled just made her repellent as a politician in my eyes (same as any virtue signaller is repellent)
Trying to follow in the footsteps of Boris!
Mental health professional, please, STAT.
@bitnboxy – Hazel bases her whole career on being able to elicit nonsense on all quarters. Love to see the pushback. She had no hope.
Isn’t “democracy” great?! You really gave Inda one in the eye, lads!
I wonder what happened with reform? Oh yeah, it was never on the ballot so this elitist, undemocratic talking shop will drain us of millions of euro for years to come.

It’s galling to see her elected. At least three suspended on corruption in that council.
Well done Chu
One in the eye for the Government elites
