This is grim stuff. Let’s hope it does not get worse. Politically, I don’t think anyone has grabbed this issue by the scruff of the neck and said “we need to fix this right now!” It just looks like they don’t want to fix it, and this is the evidence.

I’m confused. I thought all their pals were developers? Who could make loads of money selling houses?

I wonder why they cant them a piece of Merrion square or Phoenix park to camp in. Would be more comfortable and healthier.

It won’t be fixed as long as those who own property want to see prices increase. A vast increase in supply and the a big increase in property tax would go a long way to resolving this but as far as I can see most political parties in Ireland won’t countenance increased property tax. Most voters who own property don’t want to see them drop in price and object at every development in their area-see Players Wills factory development for the latest example of this.
The other issue is that of drug treatment centres. Most people on the streets are there as a result of substance abuse.
Jonathan Corry didn’t die because he didn’t have a home. He died because he turned his back on his child and a stable life in part because of a drug addiction and the choices HE made.

Portugal seem to have solved a major problem of drug addiction in their country, they legalized all drugs and concentrated on addiction treatment and better social care. Ireland needs to do this. I can’t remember a time when there was not a visible heroin addict problem in Dublin’s city centre. My first trip into town with school friends was scary, we got followed around by addicts who thought we had money. We were only 13.

The majority of the homeless were failed by their parents or lack their of.

    Most never had a hope.
