The votes are in.
Last Friday, with a suggestion from Scottser and a €50 Golden Discs voucher on offer, I asked you to name your favourite one-hit wonder.
You answered in your many dozens creating a sole-hit strewn playlist for the ages.
But there could be only one winner.
Third Place:
Rapper’s Delight by The Sugarhill Gang
Penfold writes:
“Whether or not it’s the best one hit wonder, it’s definitely one of my favourites and possibly the most important.”
Runner-up:
Swords Of A Thousand Men by Tenpole Tudor
Gary Flood writes:
“Men larking about in a field with weapons and chainmail. And a horse.
Gotta be Tenpole Tudor and “Swords of a Thousand Men”. Innit?”
Winner:
Mary’s Prayer by Danny Wilson
Friscondo writes:
“A sublime piece of soul/pop that immediately brightens your day when it comes on the radio. Hard to believe that they didn’t follow it up with more hits, although writer Gary Clark went on to write for a host of others, from Natalie Imbruglia to Loyd Cole.”
Nick says: Well done Frscondo and thanks all.
Last week: Win Nick’s Golden Voucher
bravo !
Congratulations, Friscondo! I will say a prayer that you get much enjoyment from the vouchers :-)
I must admit I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the various entries, and was amazed at the relatively low number of people posting the same song, which can happen. There are so many wonderful songs out there.
The wanton disregard of Apache by Sugarhill Gang bringing the whole competition into disrepute. Listen to this and tell me you don’t recognise it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQObWW06VAM
Congrats!
(but I definitely remember Danny Willson’s Second Summer Of Love :)
Don’t know how i missed this in the comments at competition time – had totally forgotten about the existence of that winning ear-worm and it is now firmly planted in my head triggering wave after wave of nostalgia.
Bloomin’ discombobulated I am now …
Congrats ! Worthy victor …
