Green Party leader Eamon Ryan during the last General Election

Last night/this morning.

The Green Party has said that in the past some of its activists may have passed themselves off as pollsters to canvass the opinion of voters.

Sinn Féin, accused of the same thing yesterday, defended the practice, saying it was a ‘common political exercise’.

Via RTÉ:

Both Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil confirmed they had employed a similar practice in the past – although Fianna Fáil discontinued the practice several years before Fine Gael.

Other political parties like, the Labour Party and the Social Democats have denied ever using such a system.

        yeah Rob

I’d say that none of this has anything to do with Fine Gael atall atall

(and believe me I have nothing to do with either of ye’re persuasions)

squeaky bum time as SAF used to say, heeheee

There would be days when large swathes of politics can seem like a big game of let’s pretend.
    faux concern,faux outrage,faux understanding,”unintended” consequences……
Seeing as it appears, with the exception of labour and the social democrats this practice was as popular as claiming maximum allowable travel expenses, it will most likely just blend in with the background noise to be forgotten about.

I would be amazed if Labour weren’t at this themselves but are just that bit slower at realising it, I’d say by 6pm today they will have an update.

    Hm.
So if you clearly asked the person to identify themselves at your front door and they said…..but in fact they were….
    Oh great.
“Mr Martin said he did not know if such activity broke the law, but said no fake IDs were used or personal data taken or recorded and the party now uses professional companies for polling.“

so – everyone’s doing it, but not us. what we were doing was very similar but very different because it was other people doing it on our behalf. not like the shinners, oh no. did i mention they’re run by a shady cabal of terrorists?

ah scottser c’mon don’t spoil the craic now

there hasn’t been much entertainment value recently on the box so getting some live is great….delicious plotline!

one morning a journo with political leanings and pal of the leader of said party (yeah yet another one of ’em) decides to engage in a bit of “activity” as there’s both a by-election afoot and generally the polls are looking grim….only he forgot to check in with Malcolm Tucker first, hilarity ensues

And this was after James Geoghegan yesterday was outraged that fake pollsters came to his door!

They didn’t of course and he has now removed the tweet.

  6. GiggidyGoo

Legal Eagle engaged in fake polling, and now running for high office. This gets better and better.

Is that Hugh’s sister in the photo? No?

P.S. No microphones, and stand facing the wrong way?

I see the antimask/antilockdown/antivaxx cheerleaders now have a candidate to rally round in the diminutive shape of Justin Barrett of the Nazional Party. Great to see such a high profile anti as Litler enter the fray.

I expect BS will give him the platform he seeks, given how much of his ideals they currently share.

    1. ian-oG

Shame I don’t live in DBS. If Litler came to my door I might just decide he was a threat and act accordingly.

Although I am not sure if stuffing someone in a bin, turning it upside down and placing several cavity blocks on it would be considered ‘reasonable force’.

      Still, one can dream…..

      ;)

Why pretend? I don’t understand the dynamic
    what’s wrong with
“Hello, I’m Jimmy Sinn Fein, here on behalf of Sinn Fein. Will you be giving us your vote?”
    “no”
“All right grand so, bye bye”
The sin here is the idea of the government pulling a ruse on the general public but I don’t understand the rationale of the ruse

    1. Broadbag

The theory is that if you say ”I’m from the bum party, do you like bums”, you might say, ”yes I do like bums” so as not to offend or get into a debate about the merits of said party, whereas if you’re conducting a general poll about all parties you might be more candid as to your thoughts on the bum party.
