I did check out the Sport section for Mr Varadkar’s tips for the Southwell and Ballinrobe races but, sadly, nothing doing.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Green Party leader Eamon Ryan also get a fleeting mention in some of these articles.
But no mention at all of the leader of the Opposition, who happens to be the leader of what the polls consider to be the most popular party in the country – north and south.

Popular is popular. She isn’t leader, she isn’t in power, she isn’t making decisions. I’m thankful for that. You can judge how SF work by looking north of the border. It ain’t the ideal utopian party it portrays itself to be down here.

Perhaps Kim Jong-un could govern the North?
Well, with the lack (or very little) of any real journalism remaining in this country, possibly the world…
whichever side sends out the most press releases is gonna get the most coverage.
Plus, Martin doesn’t make news. He’s boring, he doesn’t sell. He’s about as interesting as a colonoscopy and as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike.
Varadkar’s not much better, but compared Martin he looks like fricking Liberace.
I’d rather prefer a boring, non-flashy, self-effacing Taoiseach or Táinaiste but this is no longer our world. Trump, Johnson, Mary Lou and Leo know the value of social media and soundbite. Our rapidly deteriorating attention spans mean we are governed by slogan and not substance. Look at where this has catapulted Johnson with his Brexit con-job.
I don’t disagree. Unfortunately, it’s just the way the media is now.
Apparently news media advertising revenues plummeted in the US when Trump left office.
To them, he was the gift that kept giving. A constant source of news and more importantly – entertainment.

Oh yes, totally agree Micko. The media of all hues could not get enough of Trump. Whether railing against him or lauding him as a messiah and the second-coming, they could not get enough.

It’s a weird situation, for over the past year, all private media companies have been very dependent on the state for advertising revenue. The endless ads about Corona, restrictions et cetera et cetera. There are regular advertisers pulled back due to the lockdowns.
This state-owned media is dependent on the good graces of the political parties in government to guarantee their licence as well as some advertising revenue.
How can this not be a conflict of interest. Media companies know that Leo is guaranteed to be the next Taoiseach, there are never going to print anything bad about them or at the very least distract from the nasty stuff.
I don’t fully agree with the Sinn Fein assessment that Mary Lou is being purposefully ignored. They are not in government, they did not receive a mandate from the majority of the Irish public. And I doubt they will in the next election either. They will need support from the far left parties and that just will not work.
I can’t remember who said it, but it was something along the lines of “when a state and its media are parroting the same message consistently, then it’s one of the main signs to get out of that country ASAP”
There were other signs of a failing state, one of which is the government scrapping inheritance. That all property would eventually go back to the state.
Obv we’re there yet, but the conflict of interest you bring up, is concerning. It is not a good sign.

Firstly, my dear aul low born abusive Giggz, your OTT unhinged reply is quite redolent of an acute narcissism in and of itself. You were well able to gaslight me a few months back although I appreciate that was due to a difficult period you subsequently admitted (and for which I sympathised).
You have an utter inability to even tolerate gentle ribbing. For seasoned posters on here, it is more than apparent that you have a bad case of Leo-fever. I mean, it is mildly amusing. And you are in decidedly no position to crow about “nastiness” given your tenure here.

Watching the news on TV3 and RTE you’d swear Alan Kelly was the leader of the opposition.
They want to co-locate the maternity hospital with an adult hospital.
At the moment if anything happens to the mother she is whisked off to Vincents (or Mater) but the baby remains in Holles Street. With co-location the mother is in a separate building but same site.
Wasn’t Leo under investigation by the Gardai for something? Or did I just dream that?
