“This Is The Reality”

Above from left: Eamon Ryan, Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications and Minister for Transport, Taoiseach Michael Martin and Tanaiste Leo Vradkar, at a press conference at Government Buildings yesterday evening

This morning.

RTÉ Radio One’s Morning Ireland.

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar said the situation is very unfair to young people but the best thing that can be done for them is to make sure they are vaccinated.

I don’t think anything is fair about this pandemic, but this is the reality,” he said.

Mr Varadkar said the Government understands the announcement on delaying reopening was a surprise for many people and it will take time now to explain the modelling provided that led to the decision.

He said he is going to sit down with the hospitality industry and see how to make a green pass/corona pass system work, adding that there will be anomalies and details to work out, including if children under six can be exempted.

But, he said, initial advice from the Attorney General is that a vaccination certificate is lawful.

Mr Varadkar said that while the Government had not planned for such a system, nobody “had anticipated a scenario where there could be up to 2,000 deaths in coming months.”

Under six, so do they plan to start vaccinating seven year olds ?

      1. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

well actually as I’m breastfeeding and the vacine travels through breast milk I don’t wish to pass this onto my baby, O don’t really want her to be a trail baby for this vaccine, she is on target with all her other vacines…I’m not antivax. Does this mean I don’t get to participate in society ?

        1. Micko

          Makes perfect sense to me.

But, sorry Janet. According to some people – you are now anti-vax.

        2. scottser

you should be allowed do exactly what vaccinated folk do if you can show a negative test.

          1. E'Matty

Indeed, it’s arguable even the vaccinated should still tested as they can still contract and transmit the virus, and can still become ill and even die.

          2. millie bobby brownie

            A very good point E’Matty.

I don’t understand why antigen testing isn’t being used here now, especially in conjunction with what has been (credit where it’s due etc) a decent vaccine rollout.

    1) – The 2000 deaths are not coming. It simply is not happening. Its absurd

    2) – I have doubts about the AGs competency if they think that vaccination passports are lawful. Any other country that has them, also has the option of a negative test.

the NPHET figures are an affront to statistics. they presume that we will have more cases, hospitalisations and deaths in 3 months than we had in 15 months and also we are a good chunk into the vaccination programme.

nolan should be brought front and centre and challenged on his stats

was there a photo opp of Leo getting jabbed ? Did I miss that ?

  4. SOQ

Coercion- no other word for it.

We will have a situation where the entire staff of a bar or restaurant can be unvaccinated and the only ones who must be vaccinated are those spending their money. I don’t know why but it is like they are trying to bankrupt these poor businesses.

    1. The Dude

‘ I don’t know why but it is like they are trying to bankrupt these poor businesses.’

That’s the conclusion I have come to also.

At the start of this pandemic, along with Sweden, Ireland had the lowest ICU beds per capita in the EU. They doubled their amount, while we added a derisory 23.

Nowhere else in the EU, have there been such long lock-downs and extinguishment of civil liberties.

Remember after the last FF – Green government that so many Irish assets were sold off to foreign funds?

It seems that this state’s MO is to abuse its citizens and force closures and collapses. To hell with them.

      1. Cian

At the start of this pandemic, along with Sweden, Ireland had the lowest ICU beds per capita in the EU. They doubled their amount,
not really; they added ventilators and a few nurses to a normal ward and called them “ICU beds”.

Nowhere else in the EU, have there been such long lock-downs and extinguishment of civil liberties.
long lockdowns yes; extinguishment of civil liberties; no. We didn’t have curfews, we had more freedom of movement than other countries.

It’s like the abdication of the responsibility to honestly and realistically assess motives, policies and outcomes in favour of a retreat to post-ironic ideological childishness only impedes effective opposition and the implementation of constructive counter-policies. Or something.

          1. E'Matty

Is it that you believe the Great Reset is not a real thing Nigel, or that our government couldn’t be actively involved?

          2. Nigel

I believe globalist marketing bumf got co-opted by conspiracy theorists as an umbrella term to create a Grand Unified But Vague And Meaningless Theory of Everything Powerful And Wealthy People Are Up To.

You know there is actually a way to determine the things our government get involved in. Unfortunately it requires more than just muttering darkly about sinister-sounding projects to control us all.

Pubs in a covid world: it’s unfair and discriminatory if people have to produce proof of vaccine

Pubs for decades before that: got any ID lads? Passports only?

Pubs for ventures before that: not tonight lads

    1. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

ah well that’s all right then, if there’s always been discrimination ….
however being pressured to wear a shirt and shoes is a little different

    2. f_lawless

Come on, think a bit harder. It’s the part about the public being coerced into having an experimental medical procedure which is the issue and which is unprecedented in the history of our democracy.

        1. E'Matty

Mass vaccination with the fastest ever developed vaccines (6 in under a year, the prior record 4 years) all approved in a highly pressurised political environment with eye watering financial incentives to get your product to market. Sounds pretty safe alright.

  6. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

So the unvaccinated dine outdoors but I gather can still use the loo indoors ? What’s to stop you wandering up to the bar ? It’s going to cause mayhem.

    1. SOQ

And what happens if you shift a vaxxer? Where do you sit then?

Actually I can see people taking up smoking again- because the outdoors is also the smoking areas.

      1. Kim Cardassian

There’ll be an area for shifting non vaxxers behind the smoking area. DCC will shortly be issuing permits

  7. Junkface

They are doing the Antigen tests or vaccination proof in Germany. I think the antigen tests for anyone who is not vaccinated is a good idea. People have to be allowed to dine anywhere if they follow that rule. Then there is no discrimination. Our politicians are really displaying a lack of confidence in themselves, they’re so amateur, no conviction. Make a hard choice, backed up by solid scientific methods and reopen. Firm action will be more appreciated by the public.

    1. The Dude

You are making far too much sense.

Far better to constantly delay every decision until the last moment to make sure there is no certainty at all for businesses so that the maximum amount of SMEs are screwed over. And then the scraps are sold off to foreign vulture funds while the mandarins award themselves pay rises. A traitor state.

    2. f_lawless

I don’t agree. Having to disclose one’s medical details (ie. a Covid test status) to access areas of everyday life such as pubs/restaurants is a big step towards normalising a “checkpoint society” if not a “two-tier checkpoint society”. For better or for worse, a pub is traditionally at the heart of social life in Irish society.

If we keep taking this approach where we have to try to tightly monitor and control the circulation of SARS-Cov-2 among the general population then we will be further instituting a totalitarian-like society. We have to learn to live with the virus. I think we should keep in mind that for the vast majority of people, the symptoms range from mild to none at all and recognise that a large portion of the population has already been exposed to the virus and will have acquired natural immunity. Everyone should be allowed to make a fully informed choice whether to have a Covid vaccine and should also be allowed access to other proven effective forms of treatment. But the idea that we are all obliged rush to get the vaccine in a race against time to make Covid go away before new variants have a chance get us is just a pseudoscientific narrative conjured up for political ends.

  8. Redundant Proofreaders Society

    Mike is a non-smoking anti-vaxxer.
Sharon is a smoker and vaccinated.
Paul is a non-smoker and vaccinated.
They have to hire a vaccinated baby-sitter and leave the kids at home if they wish to have a Sunday family lunch.
If the sun is shining they will have difficulty reserving an outside table in a smoking area.
This is not going to work.

    1. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

I can feel a song coming on ” riding an antivax in the jacks “

  9. freewheeling

Reality is what you make it Tanaiste, if you are the one in power. Oh wait .. that’s NPHET. Tail wagging the dog again.

  10. f_lawless

“He said he is going to sit down with the hospitality industry and see how to make a green pass/corona pass system work”

“Plans to buy them off using the seemingly endless stream of Covid funding”

        Hehhehe

        Strutter is deadly.

The handsome coke sniper is a personal fav after the Strutter bubble

  11. Bruncvik

The EU has mandated vaccination passports (actually “Green passports” that include vaccination information, information of overcoming the illness and the date of the last negative test) for travel from tomorrow, and Mr. Varadkar is only now beginning to consider them? What has he been doing till now? Flogging his speech writers for more witty one-liners?
