Covid hospitalisations up 38% in a week, in England. The response of Bozo and the Tories is to remove all restrictions.

It’s the apex of Conservative thinking. Let the (poor people’s) bodies pile high. What does it matter if another 200k or even 500k die. It takes pressure off social services and will give GB a head start opening up…time will tell..

      1. Joe

Most importantly for the Tories and their FFG blue tories wannabees is to keep profits up and hey! Who cares as workers are expendable in the pursuit of profits

    2. f_lawless

Would there be any point in challenging your assumption that the lockdowns have had any real impact in controlling the spread of Covid? Wait, don’t answer that.. ;)

      https://www.hartgroup.org/government-modellers-wrong/

“Lockdowns can work for some infectious diseases, but not for COVID-19”

“When a disease is transmitted in a chain person-to-person, as for childhood infections such as measles, then reducing human contact reduces transmission. The (UK) data on gastroenteritis (in the Covid lockdown era) shows clear evidence of this. Most gastroenteritis is caught through close contact…Attendances for gastroenteritis at the emergency department halved in March 2020 and the attendance rates have correlated very tightly since…

..However, the same data does not show a similar relationship to COVID attendances. Seasonal infectious diseases, like influenza, show winter surges are unrelated to human behaviour and low levels of transmission in summer, again, are independent of human behaviour. COVID-19 appears to have a similar trajectory unrelated to changes in human interaction.”

Melbourne – 700 new infections per day, down to zero. But hey, facts. The key thing is that new arrivals have to be controlled, ie quarantined. Allowing new cases to walk/fly/ferry/drive into the country is not going to work.

        1. U N M U T U A L

Australia’s NT covid convict camp is branded the “Centre for National Resilience”… That’s some grade A Orwellian doublespeak they’ve got going on over there. It’s sad to see they haven’t shaken off their historical prison mentality.

          1. Formerly known as @ireland.com

I can assure you that all of the Aussies stranded overseas would prefer two weeks in that camp built for miners than being unable to return home. The Aussie Federal Government is run by Bozo-Trump style Tories. They renamed the Customs Service to Border Force.

What happened winter flu last year? It disappeared.

Why? Because of all the social distancing, work-from-home, handwashing, masking, etc.

        1. SOQ

So where did it go in countries where social distancing and hygiene was not possible? Given the amount of people who were counted as Covid-19 without even a test, I think it is pretty safe to assume it just got relabelled.

          1. Cian

What countries were “social distancing and hygiene was not possible”?

How many people were “counted as Covid-19 without even a test”?

          1. Cian

Ireland:There was no evidence of influenza viruses circulating in the community in Ireland during weeks 19 and 20 2021 (weeks ending 16/05/2021 and 23/05/2021) or during weeks 40 2020 to 18 2021.

            • National Virus Reference Laboratory (NVRL):
o Of 1,860 sentinel GP ILI specimens and 3,419 non-sentinel respiratory specimens tested for influenza and RSV this season to date, no positive influenza detections were reported.

            Globally:
As of 24th May 2021, based on data up to 9th May 2021, WHO reported that globally, despite continued or even increased testing for influenza in some countries, influenza activity remained at lower levels than expected for this time of the year. In the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere, influenza activity remained below baseline, though detections of influenza B-Victoria lineage slightly increased especially in China. In the temperate zone of the southern hemisphere, influenza activity was reported at inter-seasonal level. In the Caribbean and Central American countries there were no influenza detections reported. In tropical South America, no influenza detections were reported. In tropical Africa, influenza detections were reported in some countries in Western and Eastern Africa. In Southern Asia, influenza activity continued to be reported at low levels in Bangladesh and India. In South East Asia, low influenza A(H3N2) detections continued to be reported in Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR). Worldwide, influenza B detections accounted for the majority of the very low numbers of detections reported. The WHO GISRS laboratories tested more than 269,303 specimens from 26th April 2021-09th May 2021. A total of 484 specimens were positive for influenza viruses

Citation for your statement ‘Because of all the social distancing, work-from-home, handwashing, masking, etc.’

        2. Junkface

From interviews with virologists that I have seen, they think that the flu is primarily spread from people flying internationally. So when the flu is in the northern hemisphere, it’s brought to the south and vice versa. Flying has been cut severely during the pandemic, way less crowded planes, but yes new hygiene rules, no hand shakes, have also made a huge difference.

      3. SOQ

Yes Peru had the strictest lockdown in the world- and also, the highest number of fatalities, if anything, there appears to be a correlation between lockdowns and higher levels of infection. Sweden is way lower the the UK for example and states like Florida and Texas are nowhere near top of the US league.

        1. Formerly known as @ireland.com

Sweden – it wasn’t legislated but people did it because they didn’t want to die or catch long Covid. There are multiple factors at work.

          1. SOQ

People did what exactly?- Schools. restaurants, bars, and shops remained open right though the whole thing. The only mask wearing was at peak times on public transport and even that was just for a short period of time.

Texas opened and the infection rates plummeted- its been such a success most other states are now following their example.

      4. Joe

You really do pick extremely poor examples for your posts and as usual your anti-vax, anti public health nonsense is correctly ignored by 99.99% of decent citizens.

“The Imperial team estimated that by early May, between 12 and 15 million people in total in Austria, Belgium, Britain, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland – around 4% of their combined population – had been infected with COVID-19.
By comparing the number of deaths counted with deaths predicted by their model if no lockdown measures had been introduced, they found some 3.1 million deaths were averted.
A second study by scientists in the United States, published alongside the Imperial-led one in the journal Nature, estimated that lockdowns in China, South Korea, Italy, Iran, France and the United States had prevented or delayed around 530 million COVID-19 cases.”

Surely a better question than whether lockdowns or quarantine work or whether we should still have restrictions is…

Why the hell are we outliers in Europe on almost every Covid policy?

      Indoor dining and events closed.
      Longest restrictions in Europe.
      Antigen testing not accepted.
6 months instead of 9 months for green pass recovery.
No Green pass system in place at all for travel.
      No free tests for travel

I think we can all agree that there’s something up here in Ireland.

      1. SOQ

Pharmaceuticals are a major contributor to the Irish economy.

        • The pharmaceutical and chemical industry continues to perform strongly throughout the economic crisis and now accounts for 60% of Ireland manufacturing exports.

        • The sector was worth 50.8 billion in 2010, a 7.3% increase from 47.3 billion in 2009.

        • The sector contributes more than €1 billion in corporation tax to the Irish Exchequer annually.

        • The replacement value of the sector is estimated to be €40 billion.

          Christ.

And there was someone on here yesterday wondering why the Irish government would give up on the hospitality industry worth 6 billion.

Small change compared to these figures.

And Ireland is still the ONLY EU member state to increase its GDP in 2020.

6 fines for dog fouling in 17 months – woah. God standing on dog poo or getting it on the wheel of your buggy as to be up there with one of the most awful things.

Anyhow that said, I hope everyone has a lovely day today. Another mixed bag of weather but sure it is what it is!

I like this England team. They seem to have found their balls at a major tournament. The 4 – 0 win over Ukraine was surprising and entertaining. They might be upping their game just at the right moment. They have great players to be fair, and a couple of them used to play for Ireland. The main thing that used to happen to England was that they turned up without any direction, or competitive energy to every tournament.

I wish Ireland had some proper investment into the football youth teams and developing players from an early age. We are getting left behind.

          2. Charlie

The win over Ukraine was far from “surprising”. Ukraine are truly awful and dead on their feet after 2 minutes of the game. England have not “upped” their game. They’re playing the same as they’ve always done but practically every other team in the tournament looked jaded and leggy. I do believe in fate though and maybe this is their time. They’ve played all their games bar one in their own back yard and have been in the weaker side of the draw. There has only been 3 Teams in this tournament, Italy, Denmark & England. The rest have been less than united. It’s a sub standard Euros in terms of brilliance but justice will prevail.

          3. Junkface

            @Charlie
You’re way off! This has been one of the best Euros from an entertainment point of view. Only 3 teams in it?? What about Spain last night? They played great, but lost. Even aging teams like Croatia put up a great fight, so did Portugal, same goes for Hungary vs Germany in the group stages. There has been lots of great football and lots of surprises. The new format at the group stages really improved it.
England only really started trying hard in the last 2 games, before that they were too cautious, so yes they have just upped their game and grown in confidence. I wouldn’t call Ukraine awful, they were just tired from their previous round. They were average at this level.

          4. Charlie

“England only really started trying hard in the last two games” lol
The facts are that there have been a few entertaining games certainly but the standard has been very average. Spain are a shadow of their former selves and can even find a striker. Germany and Croatia are over the hill. Portugal practically rely on one man. Hungary, Turkey etc are less than average. There has only been 3 real football teams(emphasis on Team) and no stars to light up the tournament. Luckily, the three best team are still there.

  4. Micko

    On the Irish Times there.

PCR test costs for travel abroad will have to be paid for privately and only people recovered in the previous 6 months, will be eligible for the green pass.

EU have stated 9 months for recovery and that the tests would be free (or super cheap).

    Ireland eh?

    Why are we different?

    1. SOQ

So they won’t allow antigen testing, even though is is much more accurate at identifying who is infectious?

Unreal. Someone is making out of the PCR scam then?

      1. Micko

        Crazy right?

If only there was a smoking gun. Something or someone that we could use to link PCR testing to government policy.

Like if there was someone on NPHET, but also involved in running a lab that was being paid millions for PCR testing.

No one would be that brazen though and we’d have to be morons to ignore that conflict of interest.

        Oh wait…. :p

        I’ve posted this link before…

        https://www.uni-due.de/2021-06-18-studie-aussagekraft-von-pcr-tests

        * Original publication:
“The performance of the SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR test as a tool for detecting SARS-CoV-2 infection in the population”
        https://www.journalofinfection.com/article/S0163-4453(21)00265-6/fulltext

In the renowned Journal of Infection *, researchers from the Medical Faculty of the UDE point out that the results of RT-PCR tests alone are insufficiently meaningful to justify measures to combat pandemics. According to their investigation, positive test results do not sufficiently prove that people infected with SARS-CoV-2 can infect other people with the coronavirus. Together with scientists from the University of Münster and the MVZ Labor Münster, they had previously evaluated around 190,000 results from more than 160,000 people.

However, the research teams from Essen and Münster question this based on their data analysis. “According to our study, a positive RT-PCR test alone is not sufficient evidence that those tested can also transmit the coronavirus to other people,” says first author Prof. Dr. Andreas Stang, Director of the Institute for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology (IMIBE) at the Essen University Hospital. “The number of SARS-CoV-2 positive testers calculated at the end should therefore not be used as a basis for pandemic control measures such as quarantine, isolation or lockdown.”

        1. Micko

“ However, he added: “Something that does bother me is that customers can do their test 40 hours in advance.”

So they were allowing people to take the test up to 40 hours before the event.

Not the same as taking an antigen test an hour before you fly SB.

        2. SOQ

Antigen tests for infectiousness, PCR does not. The two tests are not comparable because they are looking for different things. That is the opinion of Professor Michael Mina of Harvard University, whom is one of the world’s experts on the subject.

  5. Charlie

Rio Ferdinand commentating after the Italy / Spain game.

‘’It doesn’t matter who from those 2 teams England play in the final, we can beat either of them.
From what I’ve seen, England have played the *best* football in the tournament so far’’. Poor ol Rio has obviously been watch a different tournament than the rest of us.

He then says “if we get past Denmark”. Unbelievable thick.

    2. Rosette of Sirius

It was delusional for sure and the looks on the other’s faces was priceless but let him at it. I reckon it was the best possible outcome for whoever else makes the final. A frantic 120 minutes of fast and furious football in the hope they don’t have enough in the tank come Sunday. Best and almost skillfully played game of football I’ve seen and the best tournament in terms of quality I think in ever. Shoulda been the final.

I like the English lads. They’re by and large a decent bunch. But as with Ken Early, I too have ‘Coming Home’ antibodies in my blood.

    3. bertie blenkinsop

England haven’t conceded a goal yet.
Harry Kane is hitting form as the tournament progresses.
They’ve a decent first 11 and more importantly, a really strong bench.
I’ve no grá for them but they’ve had a good tournament to date IMO.

      1. scottser

‘goals win games, clean sheets win tournaments’.
while england have done well not to concede, i get the impression that if denmark score, and score early then england’s confidence will crack and they’ll get hammered. the ukraine game really flattered to deceive england – they’re not as good as they think.
still, it’ll be a good match tonight. anyone got any recommendations for a decent danish beer – not carlsberg or tuborg?

        1. Charlie

I’d also love to see how England would react if Denmark score first. To be fair, I don’t think they’d be hammered.
However, should they make the final(and they should), I’d love to see how they’d react if Italy score first. Now that would be a totally different story.

          1. scottser

denmark won’t settle for a one-nil, they’ll always go for a second and third. italy, if they score will park the bus.
either way, i’ll be dusting off the old schadenfreud tonight and laughing openly at english misfortunes the way every proper irishman should.

  6. SOQ

Downright disingenuous headline in the Irish Times- Vaccinated to get digital EU travel certs from next Monday. It then rightly corrects that header with PCR test results are accepted and the 170 000 who have recovered.

Problem is, as of today, there is 275 038 confirmed cases, so what about the other 100 000?? Where is exactly did the 170 k figure come from?

    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/covid-19-fully-vaccinated-to-begin-to-receive-eu-travel-certs-from-monday-1.4613531

    1. GiggidyGoo

The headlines are for passers-by who don’t buy. These mainstream media companies get lobbed large sums of advertising revenue from the State, so they toe the lolly line.

    2. Cian

      @SOQ
Did you read the article you linked to? the answer to your question it is literally in the second paragraph? I’ll copy it here for you (the bit in bold is the answer):

Up to 170,000 people who have recovered from Covid-19 in the last six months will also be expected to contact a special call centre to get their certificate.

      1. SOQ

Yes I did- I was commenting on the headline which infers only vaccinated can get digital certs.

And that theme is presented over and over and over again- it is insidious propaganda to reaffirm the belief that you must be vaccinated in order to fly. You do not.

        1. Cian

You pointed out the headline was wrong, then asked a question.
          I answered that question.

Perhaps if it were a youtube video you would have a better chance of understanding it….

        1. Cian

“people who have recovered from Covid-19 in the last six months “

          Your comprehension skills are awful.

          1. SOQ

I know its the past six months but where are they getting that figure of 170 k from?

170k in the past six months yet only 100 k for the pervious year? That is BS.

  7. Johnny

It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.

I strongly oppose further govt intervention, they really have made an absolute mess of housing, just stay out the commercial market, read some Ayn Rand like you always wanted to,but do no interfere here,it will cost way,way too much and end badly for the state.

“Already we are seeing vacancy rates of up to 30 per cent on what have traditionally been our busiest high streets, and we know that there were 2,000 more commercial vacancies at the end of 2020 as there were at the same time the year before,”
