Divide Is The Rule

at

This afternoon.

Further to plans to re-open indoor dining and drinking only to the vaxxed…

…via the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL)

‘ICCL has opposed the idea of vaccine passports since they were first mooted in early 2021. A system of vaccine passports for access to goods and services will discriminate against people on the grounds of health status.

Such a system would also set a precedent of requiring people to share private medical data to gain access to services…

…Up until less than two weeks ago, the Government also agreed that these human rights and civil liberties concerns were too serious to consider introducing vaccine passes. The idea that allowing indoor dining and drinking this month is so urgent that these concerns should now be dispensed with – via emergency legislation and without meaningful debate – is frankly incredible.’

ICCL’s Executive Director Liam Herrick said:

“We cannot set a precedent whereby government can declare that problems with its own re-opening timetable constitute some sort of parliamentary emergency, which would justify ignoring serious and complex issues of workers’ rights, equality law, privacy, and data protection. Human rights law is there to protect us all. We cannot dispense with it when faced with political dilemmas.”

We may have to form opposing groups who would get as many people as possible to volunteer to be litigants. Preferably those on limited means so even if the cases are lost, no costs awarded against them could ever be recovered leaving our target respondents to foot hundreds of thousands of euros in legal fees. Engage in litigation against as many businesses who enforce these rules (and the State too) as possible, forcing them to engage legal representation and therefore straight away, incur significant legal costs. We can afford to lose the cases as no financial repercussions can result where the litigant is already broke. Such litigants cannot be precluded from taking these actions as to do so would be blocking the Constitutional right of access to the courts (This is a problem that blights personal injuries litigation and so we will use it our advantage). If successful at all, the damages that will flow to numerous litigants would be enormous and catastrophic for those who are targeted by this campaign.

Just like the water charges boycott, financial pressure is the most effective means of fighting these measures. If imposed, let’s hit them in the pocket and hit them hard. Peaceful resistance by financial and legal means is our best route to successful opposition.

Why does this particular NGO get so much air-time? I can’t recall them ever being in favour of anything – they couldn’t even bring themselves to endorse the completely benign Covid app, at a time when it could’ve really made a difference.

They are the shepherd boy that’s cried wolf far too often. The choice here is no indoor dining for anyone or indoor dining for the vaccinated. It’s easy to ignore pragmatism in favour of idealism when you are only affected in a limited way, if at all. How many ICCL members work tables in restaurants I wonder?

No its bloody not- the choice is this back of the bus discrimination or open the pubs and restaurants for all- like they have done in the UK.

Enough of this BS- people are sick of it. If you don’t feel comfortable going out then don’t.

      1. Boomer

It absolutely bloody is. Back of the bus discrimination ffs. Get a grip. Our experts don’t think our vaccination programme is far enough advanced to do what the UK is doing – and even what they are doing is fraught with risk.

Just because you are sick of doing the right thing doesn’t mean the right thing should be abandoned.

        1. SOQ

Experts? LOL Modellers who have got it consistently wrong at every step from the very start? “Experts” who refuse to allow rapid antigen testing even though it has been accepted in every other country in Europe?

The only difference between UK and Ireland is people took to the streets and if they done the same thing here, the politicians would change their tune double quick. One thing is for certain, it is not their businesses and homes which are on the line.

          1. Boomer

The only difference? The UK expects to have two thirds of the adult population vaccinated by July 19, we will have less than half. Our hospitals are full, the caution is justified.

            Some pretty big differences there.

          2. SOQ

You are assuming that vaccinations are the reason for the decline except the same thing happened this time last year with no vaccinations. Already they are saying vaccinated will require a ‘booster’- lets see how effective they are come next season eh?

The hospitals are NOT full- well not from CoVid-19 anyways- and even if they were, how much increase in capacity happened in a year and a half of this deadly virus?

It’s BS- no other word for it.

        And America too SOQ.

As someone rightfully said the other day on the radio.

“We have gone from protecting the vulnerable, to protecting the fearful. “

We’re a very scared race we Irish. We’re also not very good at making our own decisions.

Probably why it took us 800 years to kick the English out

        1. SOQ

The state media went into overdrive- it was wartime propaganda and nobody was allowed to challenge the narrative for fear of being ostracised.

Apart from a few brave souls in the medical profession, dissidents were claiming their pension or had enough to keep them going.

This indoor dining and drinking issue has just ballooned into a controlling stick. People used to cough, sneeze and splutter like billy-o during flu season on buses and in pubs and not a word set to them. Folk would bring in tick-infested oul dogs. Though a friend of ours was once barred from the local when he caught shingles.

    1. Micko

      Good point.

How many people have we all possibly killed or maimed by unknowingly starting a flu chain reaction that went on to accidentally be passed to a vulnerable person.

Very odd times to live in now.
