Win Nick’s Golden Voucher [Extended]

Thank Fionnouladh it’s Friday.

It’s that time of the week when the sacred warriors of the keyboard put down their weapons and feel the love all around us. Yes, it’s another music competition.

Prompted by reader Janet I Ate My Avatr‘s dismay at the kyboshing of the Dublin City Marathon this week, the theme today is: your favourite song to go long-distance running to.

Here’s mine.

Reply below to be in with a chance of bagging yourself a €50 Golden Discs voucher redeemable in any Golden Discs store.

The winner will be chosen by my fitness instructor.

Please leave a video link where possible, thanks.

Lines MUST close on Saturday at Midday.

Nick says: Good luck.

Last week’s winner: Lush!

Given that some (me) are lazy good for nothings, could we include best songs for a long drive? I only run if chased by bears.

  2. CapernosityandFunction

Flaming Lips – Race for the Prize

What could be more running-y? Plus one of the most wonderful exhibitions of drum bashing committed to record. It’s about scientists, but scientists run too.

Sorry nicorigo I got beaten to the punch last week. It happens to the best of us.

omg omg, a favorite !!!! so excited now I’ll have to post one for every route and run, hills versus tempo, what excellent timing, I just got all clear to train properly, now I have successfully trained my abbs back together it’s GO ! She didn’t even give out to me ( that much) for sneaking in a run before the all clear :)
Big J is back out to play

        1. Papi

They have a thing here with mom’s and their kids racing each other with all terrain buggies, it’s hardcore, 50 or so going full tilt, you’d love it.

    1. Clampers Outside

Great to hear it J, and looking forward to the tracks this weekend… Musical ones, not the running haha! :)

A Pink Floyd masterpiece, turn your Hi-Fi/ Ear buds/ Headphones amplifier up to 11 :)

    Run Like Hell

Run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run
Run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run
You better make your face up in
    Your favorite disguise
With your button down lips and your
    Roller blind eyes
    With your empty smile
    And your hungry heart
Feel the bile rising from your guilty past
    With your nerves in tatters
    When the conch shell shatters
    And the hammers batter
    Down your door
    You’d better run

  5. Harry

With the very beautiful singing of Annie Lennox, a meditation on the end of a relationship…

    The Eurythmics
    Thorn in My Side

Thorn in my side, you know that’s all you ever were
A bundle of lies, you know that’s all that it was worth
I should have known better but I trusted you at first
I should have known better but I got what I deserved

To run away from you (Run, run, run, run) was all that I could do (Run, run, run, run)
To run away from you (Run, run, run, run) was all that I could do (Run, run, run, run)
To run away from you (Run, run, run, run) was all that I could do (Run, run, run, run)
To run away from you (Run, run, run, run) was all that I could do

    I don’t do runnin’ me :/

Put me on a bike though, and I’ll go all day wha’ :0)
Stop that, get your head outta the duurt!

But while I’m here… Any of the Hertz & Kerbe mixes, like this one…

    1. Rosette of Sirius

I ride *snigger* too…. Road, trail and XC. Too old for enduro. I cannot, however, listen to music or anything else for that matter on a bike.

      1. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

I used to ride but now my retinas are too tight to risk a bump

  7. CapernosityandFunction

Frankie Goes To Hollywood – Maximum Joy

If I have a run then I want something that pushes me along. The rhythm of the song should propel the runner with an almost mechanical tempo. No better crew than the ZTT team lead by Trevor Horn to create something suitable. The end of the song mirrors the natural end of the run as you stand there panting, head down, hands on thighs, feeling better for it.

  8. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

I used to finish work about 3 am nothing better than running through the empty dark streets of Paris with my mutts to shake of the gabble of folks to some tough lady choooons Missy Elliott

  9. CapernosityandFunction

Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Fanfare For The Common Man

Overblown and pompous prog rock, however, it’s not a bad tune to run to. You need 70’s style bushy perm with headband and Alan Partridge shorts. Video filmed in one of the finest white elephant stadiums ever built, for the Montreal Olympics.

  10. Rosette of Sirius

I have a few different playlists as I can usually end up out for a couple of hors on a good day. In all my playlists there’s always one specific album always in the list.

Thunder, Lightning, Strike from The Go! Team.

It’s perhaps one of the most energizing records ever. And, I always start my run with the track Get It Together.

Just gets me in the mood for a long run.

There’s one other song that’s in all my running related playlists and that’s Dance Yrself Clean from LCD Soundsystem. When I’m hitting 10 miles and want to push on for more, that track gives me a boost that Red Bull wishes it could capture in a can.

    1. Clampers Outside

      I like that… :0)

Nice vid too… A “one shot” type thing, I think from that first viewing :)

  11. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

always thought this was a nice running in the rain track ( which is my favorite time to run, love sticking the head down into driving rain and wind and fighting it out )
Like the ribs of a broken umbrella,

always room for an emotional run, best cure for any break-up, sign up for a race, make a plan and cry your eyes out over your first few km, sure you’ll have forgotten why you cared by the time the endorphins hit, rewire your brain chemistry happy, Kate Bush, Running up that hill

  13. stephen moran

Belle and Sebastian – The Stars of Track & Field. Wistful pop meets indie heaven. The opening track form their classic breakthrough album “If Your Feeling Sinister” which would help soothe the loneliness of any long distance runner

    “You liberated
    A boy I never rated
    And now he’s throwing discus
    For Liverpool and Widnes”

Running is quite a religious thing for me, got me out of a depression that lasted for my latter teens and most of my 20s, and helped me drop 40kg. It’s also religious in that I feel weird if I don’t do it, kinda like my mother having to go to mass, even in a country where she doesn’t speak the language.
Eminem’s lose yourself is a proven 20s per km pace increaser, in particular this verse, when you feel like giving up:

Gotten me to the point, I’m like a snail I’ve got
To formulate a plot or end up in jail or shot
Success is my only motherfuckin’ option, failure’s not
Mom, I love you, but this trailer’s got to go, I cannot grow old in Salem’s Lot
So here I go, is my shot
Feet, fail me not, this may be the only opportunity that I got

But, one of the best most emotional moments I’ve had running was during my second Dublin marathon. I was passing a DJ booth as he played Springsteen’s born to run, right at the oh! In this verse:
Oh, baby this town rips the bones from your back
    It’s a death trap, it’s a suicide rap
We gotta get out while we’re young
‘Cause tramps like us, baby, we were born to run

I threw a fist up in the air and the cheer that erupted carried me for the 10 miles

But I prefer the Frankie goes to Hollywood version:

    1. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

I hear ya, a year without running did nothing for my fuse.

  15. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

btw Nick, love that Air track, brings me back to a different kind of session :)

  16. eamonn

I have been imagining myself running – never ends well though!
this has been my imaginary soundtrack
    Junior walker roadrunner
Been trying to get myself into the running mindset – having no luck though.

  17. Johnny

when running and biking,i tend listen music i dont normally.
at moment im running to a playlist described as …From Black Panther to Clueless, Dazed and Confused to Do the Right Thing, Velvet Goldmine to Frances Ha, the music that has defined modern filmmaking..
    this is from it.
Cypress Hill & Sonic Youth – I Love You Mary Jane

but in keeping with the spirit the competition,on my 3 milers i just always hit my stride when i hear the opening beat to this classic….oh i’m totally baked running, try it with some film score music,in the woods,it feels like your getting chased…:)
Kill Bill Vol.1 – Isaac Hayes – Run Fay Run

  18. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe
