Really miss Chunky Monkey tho you can still get that from at a counter when scooped.

That said my new favourite ice cream is Murphy’s Brown Bread. Jeez that’s good.

I watched a bit of the House of Commons discussing the NI Protocol. It is outrageous that English people were carrying on about a customs border between NI and GB with no sense of irony that their country imposed a much harsher border within Ireland. 100 years later and it is still costing everyone involved.

I was looking everywhere for coverage of the olympics on RTÉ but it doesn’t start till tomorrow :( I’m so excited for the women’s marathon, I’ve a few ladies that I really want to do well.

    1. Slave to the Rhythm

haven’t we all birdie… but yes, of all the olympics sports the ones I admire most are the women’s long distance running events, particularly the 10,000m, the lap times the ladies achieve in those are simply staggering, the elegance, the grace, without breaking a stride, and the way the more capable ones can just go up several gears of pace, mid-race, ensemble, thoroughly bewitching…

I’m very excited to see how Molly Seidel and Aliphine Tuliamuk of USA do. Both have great stories and wonderful personalities. I’d love if they place.

Sinead Diver is great too, would be great if she finishes in the top 6.

And then of course the skill, grace and beauty of Brigid Kosgei running. 5 ish min pace for 26.2 miles is just amazing. Mixed feelings about the super shoes though.

        1. bertie blenkinsop

          She’s amazing.
I wonder how far we are away from an official sub 2 hour marathon…

        “Shannon MacCurley’s pregnant.”

        “Who’s she havin’ it for.”

        “She won’t say.”

        “She doesn’t know!”

One hundred and sixteen. That the number athletes we’re sending to the games. By far, the biggest team ever.

So much to look forward to including Nicolas Roche and Dan Martin in the cycling, our world champion rowers and Kellie Harrington in the boxing.

I do have some mix feelings about Rory in the golf. He and Shane Lowry should be a very competitive team and are pals. But from what he’s said so far, his heart is not in it for the green shirt.

Really looking forward to these games and have ensured lots of down time to watch them.

116 people, most of whom have to self-fund to get there.

Appalling state of affairs that most of our Olympic athletes receive no support from this country, but this country will happily share in their glory should they win.

        1. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

true that, also the state of / lack of/ cost of/ size of public swimming pools to train in

          1. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

that’s the lack of part, badly structured sentence, apologies,
well you don’t have to be a member to avail of Portmarnock so I guess it’s kind of public, apart from the cost

          2. Rosette of Sirius

I got it alright J! Was simply amplifying your point about the appalling lack of public pools in this country. It’s unthinkable elsewhere.

          3. MR.Bezos

            Agreed.
A shame about the lack of facilities for minority sports* too – whitewater slalom anyone?

*Minority sports we have olympic athletes in, no less – they train in UK

        2. Rosette of Sirius

Indeed. And all the more reason to support them regardless of where they finish.

  3. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

I came to say looking at the news, that it just felt that Armageddon was just inching closer and that I was goy back to bed,
but then all the sports comments chatter cheered me up, Ireland produces good runners :)

    1. Junkface

I think the Olympics could be a much needed distraction or stress relief for many people in the world. There’s always some event or competitor that makes everyone tune in to watch and cheer along to. Sports are a hugely important release and can bring everyone together.

    1. Rosette of Sirius

Gotta say I was very nervous when that news broke the other day and that the lad from Donegal was in serious trouble… He’s not of course but still, not a good time for that club at all.

      1. goldenbrown

top tier football is like some kind of ghastly social experiment at times

give a lad a job he loves, adulation and more cash per week than many normal people earn in a year and watch what happens

    2. bertie blenkinsop

Bit of a mess there atm.
Rafa (or Paellardyce as he’s now known) will be gone by Easter most likely, the fans will never take to him.
They had loads of money, Ancelotti and they’ve still contrived to makes a hames of it.
It’s a shame, despite my loyalties I have a soft spot for them.

      1. scottser

he is, as they say, ‘a good football man’ is rafa. they should make the best of him because they won’t get better any time soon.

        1. bertie blenkinsop

Delusions of grandeur from some of their fanbase that haven’t seen a trophy since ’95 will make them think they deserve better than Rafa. (see also: Newcastle).
I saw Rafa give a talk in Trinity College a few years ago, it was every bit as equal parts madness / genius as you can imagine.

          1. Slave to the Rhythm

oh I’d say… personally I love Rafa, I mean what can top the sheer spectacle of Istanbul, I still insist what he did with so many average players was legendary, a shame he didn’t cap his achievements with PL title as well, but he was literally working with one arm tied behind his back, with those Yank idiots at the time…

Meet the team responsible for one the most jaw dropping energy policy decisions I’ve encountered.

    https://www.cru.ie/home/about-cru/our-team/

This is just bad,bad policy, you can NOT design never mind build a indoor commercial growing operation without renewal power.

-The IDA also has serious doubts about the CRU’s most favoured option, that data centres with their own independent electricity generators, get priority for grid connection in the future.
The development agency argues that this would require data centres to spend money building unsustainable fossil fuel-powered generators.
IDA clients have a clear preference that the market supply their electricity from increasingly sustainable sources, the submission says.-

    https://www.irishtimes.com/business/energy-and-resources/electricity-grid-warnings-causing-disquiet-among-multinationals-says-ida-1.4627029

Getting this right is critical to Ireland’s future, the team above does not inspire any confidence,it’s just a dreadful outdated anti-science,climate denying thick paddy team-who picked it they have too much power.

    1. Johnny

Data centers use more power than indoor growing, when Colorado went legal they had no idea,no one really did what the energy burn would be,quite quickly indoor was using 3% and growing fast.

So Massachusetts, has such limits on what you can do if you plug into the grid, the only option to grow indoors is using renewable power,we mix of solar, hydro and natural gas co-gen.

This policy is critical to Ireland, there is a very large developed green energy “field” of capital looking for a home, industry and the IDA favors it,this policy decision also rests on the shoulders of teacher and rural TD,Fergus O’Dowd, who has backed every losing FG leader.

Why would some who went all that trouble of getting ahem,a Bachelor of Arts in German from ulster uni,be leading this team, her qualifications I’m sorry are junk, she has no energy experience none, her work experience is nonexistent, this lone wolf has gone rogue on energy policy she needs go today

    2. Slave to the Rhythm

unbelievable, truly eye-watering stuff, like where do they actually get such incompetents from?
