Win Nick’s Esteem [Extended]

at

Thank Fachtna it’s Friday.

You know the drill by now. It’s a voucher-free music nerd knees-up. And all in the best possible taste.

This week, I want to know: What’s your favourite song whose title or lyrics mention dreams or dreaming.

Here’s mine.

Lines MUST close on Saturday at Midday.

Please include video link if possible.

Nick says: Good luck!

Horslips – The Man Who Built America

Last week, I asked you to name your favourite song whose title or lyrics refer to metals.

Reader Eamonn won my esteem with this Irish prog banger:

“All about America right now. Golden Nails, Silver Bars. Only had to hear it once, never forgot it. Never had the excuse to post about it on the interwebs though.”

Nick says: Well done, Eamonn and thanks all.

Last week: Win Nick’s Esteem

Nice one, Paulus. I was just about to post it. Waylon puts the likes of Garth Brooks in the ha’penny place. His is the only version of this for me. Such a beautiful song, such a chocolate voice.

So many Metal songs about Ctulthu “dead but dreaming”
But today I shall go for Metallicas latest album track “Dream no more”
45 mins into this live concert

    https://youtu.be/85oEUVqgefU

    “Sanity taken
    Seething damnation
    Cthulhu, awaken
    (Wake) Winged salvation
    Death by creation
    Cthulhu, awaken
    (Wake) Dreaming no more”

the 80’s had rakes of songs about dreams….good, bad, broken, shattered….pick a verb/noun and add…but my favourite one had this chorus:

And I find it kind of funny I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it’s a very, very mad world

the song isn’t about suicide as was oft interpreted – it was based on some psychologist lad’s theory that the more dramatic the dream the bigger release of tension or somesuch…anyway that’s my pick

For me it’s got to be Dreams by the Cranberries

    https://youtu.be/Yam5uK6e-bQ

I’ve been listening to them a lot lately and it’s given me a whole new appreciation for Dolores. She had such talent. What a voice. Silvery high notes to a depth of feeling in a breath. It had to be this song, for me.

    1. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

that takes me back, there was a German exchange student I was a little bit in love with as a young thing, we used to listen to the cranberries together when we weren’t taking long walks on the beach ;)

Probably doesn’t de link but I’ll nominate Counting Crows’ Angels of the Silences.
It was getting a lot of air-time when it came out and was unfortuantely the punchiest track we’d ever hear from the band that I thought, until comically recently, was fronted by an Afro-American.

    Roy Orbison – In Dreams

Bonus marks for soundtracking the nightmarish ‘Beer at Ben’s’ scene in Blue Velvet in which a ‘fkn suave’ Ben played by Dean Stockwell serenades Frank Booth played by Dennis Hopper.

Well this is a timely comp….

My current favourite song about dreams is ‘Silent Lucidity’ by Queensryche… a track that just happens to have been played in the closing scene to Nine Perfect Strangers a few minutes ago (for me). Crackin’ show, and a wholly and utterly brilliant choice of music to close the show with.

    Opening verse…
    “Hush now, don’t you cry
Wipe away the teardrop from your eye
    You’re lying safe in bed
It was all a bad dream spinning in your head
Your mind tricked you to feel the pain
Of someone close to you leaving the game of life
So here it is, another chance
Wide awake you face the day
    Your dream is over
    Or has it just begun?”

    The track… https://youtu.be/jhat-xUQ6dw

  7. Otis Blue

“Last night as I lay dreaming of pleasant days gone by
Me mind being bent on rambling, to Ireland I did fly
I stepped on board a vision, and I followed with a will
‘Til next I came to anchor at the cross at Spancil Hill”

Eraserhead – Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

    https://youtu.be/W_ENyUs_RjY

Possibly, possibly one of the best titles for a book, ever, put to a tune by Belgian thumpers Eraserhead. These boys hoovered up their American cult classics.
