Thank Philo it’s Friday.
All you good people deserve another crack at my weekly music shenanigans, even though the voucher is a thing of of the past/future.
So without further ado, this week I want to know, with Winter closing in, what’s your favourite song about or which mentions Winter?
Here’s mine.
Please include video links if possible.
Lines MUST close on Saturday at Midday!
Nick says: Good luck!
Meanwhile…
Alison Goldfrapp – A&E
Last week, I asked you for your favourite song to dance to. Glaxiapolizia won my esteem with this entry.
“From first-up floor-filler to clearing the sticky dancefloor…before they launch into Amhran na bhFiann and the lights come up to highlight the bleary-eyes of dishevelled Dishco-dancers full of dandruff and regret after the mandatory Copper’s-binge-feed of 8 pints, too many WKDs & a rake of JagerMeisters: the sublime Alison Goldfrapp – Have a lovely day, peeps…!”
Nick says: Thanks all.

Not necessarily my favourite, but definitely my favourite version of this classic. The Bangles and Hazy Shade of Winter

While i’m still puffed with Nick’s “considerable” (his words not mine!) esteem from a few weeks ago i propose Pixies and Winterlong for the sole reason that it’s a Pixies song that mentions Winter which is more than sufficient according to my Siamsa annual :-

One that will skirt the rules if not downright break them altogether and be disqualified is Kiwi band “The Chills” and Pink Frost from 1984 ..

That’ll do me for now ….
Nice choice Ferg, was going to post Pixies Winterlong myself, as an alternative here’s the original by Neil Young:

Well the only song worthy of entering this contest on the greatest day of the year, my birthday is my favourite song by Tori Amos. That song is Winter and I bought the limited edition single when it came out as it has Tori doing three cover versions. Three excellent versions of The Stones Angie, Led Zepps Thank You and Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Excellent choice. It’s my current ear worm!

I’m getting a sense of déjà vu. Dec 18 2020, to be specific..
Scotser, I am glad to see that, I have been humming Winter in America, thinking that might be my best bet. back to the drawing board. It always surprises me the themes that come up, I try not to be too repetitive but can’t promise I am not repeating. again + again.

December – The Waterboys
This tune soundtracks the final scene in Robert Altman’s post revisionist western McCabe & Mrs.Miller, starring Julie Christie & Warren Beatty, during which McCabe (Beatty ) is fatally wounded as the snow piles up around him, with no witnesses around, while Mrs. Miller (Christie) is off somewhere gazing at her opium pipe.
“Trav’ling lady, stay awhile
Until the night is over.
I’m just a station on your way,
I know I’m not your lover.
Well I lived with a child of snow
When I was a soldier,
And I fought every man for her
Until the nights grew colder.”

The Cocteau’s are three of my favourite Scottish Twins.
Keep on extending your esteem. It is a regular remedy for the weekend boredom and I don’t think I’m the only one who appreciates it.
I won’t enter this time, but if you had a different opening I think I could oblige.

top, top, TOP tunes echoed away to silence…

In The Bleak Midwinter
https://youtu.be/gFca8sTbbkg
This version is from Carols at King’s College, Cambridge. This is the epitome of the High Church Anglican hymn in the classic Church of England Christmas setting. Winter is my favourite season and this song evokes those images of the barren trees surrounding the ancient church amidst a graveyard of faded headstones tinged with frost. Lovely.
I’m not a fan of traditional English carols but I like this one, it’s very evocative. It was originally written as a poem by Christina Rossetti and despite sounding older it was only set to music in the early 20th century.
Winter’s just not very inspiring I guess
Here’s my one
I decided to Google Rammsteins darkest songs
Here’s what their fans say
We all know how dark the Lindemann mind is, so I thought we’d discuss the darkest of Rammstein’s songs.
The top one that completely gets my vote is Kokain. He portrays the deceitful nature of drugs and his own battle with it, and it’s just plain dark. “Du bist das schönste kind VON ALLEN”
The others on my list are:
Heirate Mich
Mein Herz Brennt
Mein Teil
Spring
Wiener Blut
Weißes Fleisch
Heirate Mich’s lyrics are just plain dark. No one is brave enough to talk about necrophilia, much less about how people can connect with necrophioliacs. This dark love, this love that transcends death is both fascinating and eerie.
Mein Herz Brennt is an obvious choice as I see it to be about nightmares. The overall composition is very good, but just sinister.
Mein Teil, another “Rammstein love story (I wish I could remember who said this!),” that just explores where no one ever wanted to go. Till portrays the extremes of love in the caniballism case and not to mention the darker side of everyone.
Spring is a very doomy song, melodic like Das Alte Leid, with just a morbid text. The world can’t get enough pain.
Wiener Blut, need I say more than: Fritzl most likely is in an institution somewhere where people are trying to understand his mind like Till can.
Weißes Fleisch, I can’t forget this one. The lines, “und keiner hier weiß
von meiner Einsamkeit” just portray the emotion of the rapist. Its dark because Till can go into the minds of these incredibly sick people and he tries to understand. What a beautiful mind Till has :held:

…the inspiration comes from a lyric found in the Joni Mitchell song Hejira.
…..
So, don’t question my state of mind
I’m doing wonderful, just fine, thank you
(Thank you)
Everything is everything and everything is beautiful
(How did you get like that?)
See all I do is keep it cool and don’t worry ’bout what everyone is doing
I already feel like doing it again, honey
I just want to stay high
I just want to stay high
I just want to stay high with you

The wonderfully talented and sadly missed Patricia ‘Trish’ Keenan (1968-2011)…
gifting the world “Winter Now”, with her band Broadcast, from their 2003 LP,
“Ha Ha Sound”/ Warp Records.
Trish survived an extremely difficult childhood to blossom into one of the most
promising new female vocal artists (alongside Roisin Murphy and Alison Goldfrapp)
who sparkled during the late 90s/early 00s.
Inspired, as she said herself, by Alice in Wonderland, 60s U.S psychedelia and
the English choral/pastoral tradition, she created charming,
stellar, avant-dream-pop
over several fabulous LPs that reward investigation.
Joyful, optimistic, non-conformist, generous, bewitching, mysterious
and courageous to the end:
