Win Nick’s Esteem [Extended]

at

Thank Fiona it’s Friday.

Have you seen your mother, baby, standing in the shadow?

As mothers of Ireland make their voices heard outside the Dáil today, there can only be one theme for our weekly voucher-free music banter: what’s your favourite song about or whose lyrics refer to mothers?

Here’s mine.

Lines close on Saturday at MIDNIGHT.

Please include video links if possible.

Nick says: Good luck!

Meanwhile…

The results are in.

Last week I asked for your favourite Beatles song. Rosette Of Sirius won my esteem with this entry:

“The Beatles are ever present in my house – musically speaking – as I listen to them in one way or another every other day. Twice on Sundays. I remain devoted.

“It is, as other have said, very hard to pick a single track. However for the sake of it, I’ll suggest – in its entirety – ‘the long one’ that is Abbey Road Medley (above). Golden Slumbers…. Oh, man

“Now, I do appreciate it’s a medley, but given it one single track on vinyl it’s fair game imo. If you can, just sit yourself down for 15 minutes – preferably with a decent set of headphones – and escape for while. Jesus they were brilliant.”

Nick says: Thanks Rosette and to all who entered.

    Ah … the Mammies.

And especially the Irish Mammies! (thinking Eoin McLove here and “My Lovely Mayo Mammy”)

And the Mammies and their daughters.

And the Mammies and their sons and I am my Mother’s son !

“Upwards over the Mountain” from Iron & Wine’s debut album released back in the bowels of the millennium popped into my head and is my selection for this week’s battle to the depth of the needle’s groove for Nick’s esteem.

A gentle, acoustic number about growing up, leaving the nest and telling Mammy not to worry … little do the Mammies know what those haystacks of known unknown worries might transform themselves into if the truth were outed …

“Mother don’t worry, I’ve got a coat and some friends on the corner

“Sometimes he wonders what his life might have been
But from the grave Mamma still haunts his dreams”

Every time I hear Christy Moore’s version of Sonny’s Dream, it unsettles me. Few other songs capture the isolation, emptiness and longing of loneliness the way it does.
I think of the thousands of older, mainly rural, single men who live their lives with few social connections and how they’ve suffered even more in the past few years.

My personal opinion is that it is rare for a cover artist to eclipse the originator. It might, on the face of it, sound a better rendition. But the song belongs to the penmanship of those that came before.

Rarer still, is a song that is completely owned by the cover artist. I believe this is one. Apologies to Mr Morrissey, he shall not read this, but facts are facts.

Is it wrong to love these lyrics ?

    Are we rolling?
    A one, a two, a three, a four
A mother was washing her baby one night
The youngest of ten and a delicate mite
The mother was poor and the baby was thin
‘Twas naught but an skeleton covered with skin
The mother turned ’round for a soap off the rack
She was only a moment but when she turned back
Her baby had gone, and in anguish she cried
“Oh, where has my baby gone?”, the angels replied
    (Plied)
Oh, your baby has gone down the plug hole
Oh, your baby has gone down the plug
The poor little thing was so skinny and thin
He should have been washed in a jug, in a jug
    Your baby is perfectly happy
He won’t need a bath anymore
He’s a-muckin’ about with the angels above
    Not lost but gone before
    {Thank you, thank you
    Thank you
    Do you wanna do it again?}

Sorry about double / treble posts but there was some serious lag in the appearance of comments yesterday evening.

U2 – Mothers of the Disappeared

As this is U2 it probably won’t be popular, however, this is a hidden gem from The Joshua Tree that touches on those amazing women in Argentina who have demonstrated for years that a mother’s love is the most unbreakable bond.

Maybe Bono wil write a song about the Mother and baby hells in Ireland. Sorry! Bono doesn’t do Ireland, only when he pays his tax somewhere else

    Thanks Nick!

More Beatles for ya. Julia from The Beatles

A song John wrote for his mother (and also Yoko, who he called Mother) who died when he was a young lad (with help from Donovan of all people)

Interestingly, it was the only time John was unaccompanied on a Beatles track.

‘Since his death he’s become Martin Luther Lennon.'”
      Paul.
(women and lennon,hm,hm,hm…plus the song is sh*te)

Heard a story about Reed when he was out on the piss in Cork somewhere. Was hopping the vodka into him. Rather than go to the bar and order another round he picked up his glass and smashed it off the ground. Bar staff came down to him with dustpan and brush and he remarked “now that I have your attention I’ll have another round.” Sounds like a bit of an arsehole truth be told.

The Smiths – The Queen Is Dead

Have always loved this line. I know, I know Morrissey is cancelled and all that. The Smiths are preserved for me though!

“I say, Charles, don’t you ever crave
To appear on the front of the Daily Mail
Dressed in your Mother’s bridal veil?”

What a man, what an artist.

Read his autobiography last year and came to admire him even more. Legend and may he rest in peace.

Had a chance to see him live in Tripod but oh no, of course I’d something better to do. Same as when I’d a chance to see Paul Simon in Vicar Street. Flippin eejit I was, complaining about the 90 quid for the ticket. Gotta see these legends when you have the chance. You’ll never remember the night you stayed in to cut your toenails. Lesson learned for me. When the ticket is going, take it!

This little interview with GSH always stuck with me

..as a child my mother would often sign in the kitchen, this was one her favorites.

‘One of these mornings, you’re goin’ to rise up singin’
And you’ll spread your wings and you’ll take the sky
But ’til that mornin’, there’s a-nothin’ can harm you

    Last one – great album.
