    First university in Europe created by monks, goes back to the 10th century.
    In Clonmacnoise County Offaly.

    My father had the great idea to call Athlone IT the University of Clonmacnise.
    That kind of thinking isn’t welcome round here.

    I remember in school that there was a book on this. I learned it through Irish, so not sure of the English language version, but I think it would be The Isles To The North. The Irish monks went south, and eventually met the Roman monks coming north.
    There was a big synod in Cashel where, amongst other important topics, the correct shape of the tonsure (thanks, Nick for the reminder) was decided. Apparently the proper Papally approved one was a round tonsure. The Irish monks preferred a more lateral version.

    But all these people were working for scum though a lot of them were probably so brainwashed at the time that they didn’t even realize it.
