Minister for Education Norma Foley
This morning.
Via RTÉ News:
The Minister for Education has lost a Supreme Court appeal against findings that two home-schooled students were unfairly excluded from the Leaving Certificate calculated grades process in 2020.
Minister for Education Norma Foley had appealed against the Court of Appeal decisions in two cases.
Today the Supreme Court ruled that the refusal to exclude two home-schooled students from the calculated grades system was an impermissible interference with the constitutional freedom of the family to provide education in the home.
So there.

Double negative – assuming this is RTEs mistake?
Mr T, tis.
It isn’t a mistake. They were asked to exclude people and they refused to exclude them. You could say they included them but that is less accurate as it doesn’t make it clear that a request was made.
refused to “except” them from the grading rules?
so did the parents just give their kids A grades, or what?
I think they are asking they be allowed sit exams rather than have a grade generated for them by teachers who don’t know them, wasn’t the process during COVID that grading was done by teachers rather than an exam?
I think they are asking they be given calculated grades…RTEs atrocious grasp of the English language making it all the more difficult to understand
that’s what i got from the piece too. it would hardly make sense for parents to provide grades for their kids, hence my original question.
Norma weeing away taxpayers money on defending something in court that she should have dealt with when the calculated grades system was planned.
She really is out of her depth
Yeah, it is a total waste of money.
But I kinda get her point. How can the state fairly assess home schooled kids?
It would have been a lot cheaper to get the handful of home-schooled to submit some of their existing work for unbiased assessment.
Home-schooling gobspoos are the worst
Losing to the Burkes…..the worst possible outcome here!
