The Russian Ambassador to Ireland Yury Anatoliyevich Filatov (top) has invited fishermen to  discuss the Russian military drill planned for 240km off Ireland’s southwest coast

This afternoon.

Members of the Irish South and West Fish Producers’ Organisation are to attend a meeting in the Russian Embassy in Dublin tomorrow.

The Ambassador of Russia to Ireland H.E. Yuriy Filatov issued the invitation to hear directly the fishermen’s concerns over proposed Russian naval exercises which are planned to take place off the south west coast early next month.

The delegation of fishermen is expected to highlight the potential harm to fish stocks and cetaceans from the effect of military sonar use and possible disruption from live ammunition drills in the area during the drills.

It is expected that they will also formally request that the planned area for the exercises be relocated further south west into deeper water off the continental shelf.

“It is expected that they will also formally request that the planned area for the exercises be relocated further south west into deeper water off the continental shelf.”

But in deeper waters its harder for the Russians to get at undersea cables. Edge of continental shelf, southwest of Ireland/west of France has the largest amount of trans-atlantic cables in one area. They are either tapping cables or tampering in some other ways – were they to actually invade Ukraine, interfering with undersea cables would be a smart strategy at the same time.

  2. Ah sure jaysus you know yourself

    No Primary Radar
No Fighter Jet Capabilities depsite having such a large Economic Interest Zone within the EU ( 2nd largest maritime I think)
A smaller Navy than Bolivia yet Bolivia has no Coast Line!

Conversation needed lads. It’s not about wars. Yes of course individually countries like Ireland have essentially no military security capabilities in a one on one war situation. Collectively though, with a multilateral approach, everybody is stronger. We’re a dragged foot of EU security.

So what? We don’t own the cables, and if there’s a war we’re fucked anyway. We are a small country with minimal natural resources. I’d rather what money we have is spent on a better life for us all. Let the big boys play with their big boys toys.

In all fairness rather west cork fishermen
Rather than a navy that can only muster one naval ship crew to sail one of 5 boats ,out to greet a military power
5 ships but only 3 with a crew that can sail the decking ship
    It’s pretty embarrassing
But as Ireland deserted our fishing industry these patriots are a tonic
Behind it all is the EU trying to Have an EU army
More fool to us if we swallow this crap

i think we are out of our depth on this (pun intended)

maybe we should give Biden a call and ask him what we should do.

    1. Gorty

Maybe the accusations of Bidens son hunter and him regarding business dealings in Ukraine is the reason Ukraine is calling the shots .
      Maybe the Donald was correct.

Meanwhile emerged today from the Russian ambassador to the EU the Postering from NATO is the reason gas supplied from Russia is sky high.
Remember that as fuel poverty is now a major problem.

Maybe we should go over to brussels and offer to remove all our objections to agreement on corporate taxation going forward, and in return we get full control over our territorial waters back.
And then build a few naval vessels to patrol our waters and a rake of medium-sized trawlers to catch our fish.
Thus creating loads of jobs in shipyards, in fishing and in fish processing.
And tell the lads & lasses in the IFSC that there are jobs available in Cork, Kerry and up the west coast.
Housing market in Dublin returns to normal (whatever that is) and we breathe life into coastal communities all around our coasts so that when oil becomes too expensive to support the aviation & tourist industry not everyone’s livelihood goes out the window.

      Good practical thinking JJ.

As mentioned above Irish fishermen can’t fish off their own coast, but Coughin’ Coveney won’t acknowledge that.
Not sure about the underwater cable cutting.
Maybe Bond might make a return from the dead ( spoiler alert, oops! ) to make that film.
      More likely.

Russians wanting to meet Cork fisherman is a good thing. Take their mind off wanting to club the seals, for eating their fish.

Just don’t go rushin’ to extremes.

      Peace

Since we are now on the UN Security Council we need a nuclear sub
But the video of Putin in fits of laughter when asked about Ireland Summed up how we are regarded
Even if we had the ships we have no sailors

  7. Gorty

We need west cork to be annexed like Crimea
Then we might get our waters back now referred to the Irish economic zone
I say borscht and stroganoff made corks national dish
