    When I returned here people asked was I going to stay in real estate, it didn’t take long to figure out if you want to actually sleep at night or have any scruples at all it was time for a career change.

      Real Estate is a little bigger than Airbnb and slumlords with sleazy agents,which operate in both Paris and Dublin,maybe it just sounds and looks better,to you in French,but students and immigrants are just as exploited and ripped off there.

      Housing or lack off homes is the root cause here,FF’s inability to lay a few bricks will bring further misery,what time is todays presser on yet another scheme and dream,constantly trying give young people false hope when they KNOW there are no homes has become farcical.

          I provided both luxury and affordable living, always spotless, comfortable and liveable.

            I also lived in much better apartments for a more reasonable price with far more laws, enforceable ones on my side in case of any problems.
            You are as usual talking through your sizeable crapper.
            Exploitation is everywhere yes, especially if you lack the proper paperwork but Ireland does it best.

            actually for the most part the owners paid my fees, guests did not unless availing of concierge services like setting up bank accounts, insurance, utility contracts, baby sitters, cleaners or for the high end stuff, drivers, chefs, spa, theater tickets, restaurant bookings, florists etc.

            you see finding a trustworthy renter is high on a landlords priority, as it can be hard to shift those who don’t even pay their rent in France, owners were happy to pay for my ability to find that person and monitor all problems that might arise including tradesmen who again wouldn’t take the peepee in case of repairs,
            the shoe is on the other foot there.
            Ironically the only people who took the peepee were Irish or American. Dirty dirty dirty ;)

    Local authority wash their hands and pass the buck to the RTB.

    In turn The Residential Tenancies Board isn’t fit for purpose. Their enforcements are non-existent and their sanctions are laughable. Which allows landlords to do as they please.

      It is a local authority issue.

      Please note the enforcement of Minimum Standards for rental accommodation is dealt with by the various Local Authorities. Where a tenant believes that the dwelling is substandard, they can contact their Local Authority and request that an inspection be carried out. Any subsequent enforcement, arising from the inspection, against a landlord who fails to comply with the Housing (Standards for Rented Housing) Regulations is a matter for the Local Authorities.

    People don’t see the other side of the story from the landlords perspective, alot of landlords are accidental landlords and more importantly, landlords have to pay tax on their earnings, leaving them with less money than they’d like.

      You never hear of someone having an accident and coming out of it a landlord though – Did hear about John’s accident? Well he’s a landlord now! Oh that’s awful what’s he going to do? Etc

      What does an ‘accidental landlord’ actually mean? I was rear-ended on the M50 and then found myself owning a two bed flat in Sandyford?

      Everyone always has the option to sell when they grow out of their first buy, but most don’t because they see it as easy money- there is nothing ‘accidental’ about it.

        My brother became an accidental landlord because he didn’t want his (vulnerable) flat mate to have nowhere to live. Flat mate is still there covering costs with a housemate but bro definitely not profiting from the setup.

    This is not a landlord/tenant situation because he is renting rooms so the people living there are actually licensees and the have no rights and have to just put up or move out . The landlord is probably staying under the threshold for tax (€14000) and he can kick out the licensees tomorrow without any notice . Some shady landlords are pretending to live in their property’s to circumvent tax and they don’t have to do any repairs or maintenance because their lodgers are not protected by tenant laws .
    They always find a loophole..

      Landlord has not lived there for years. Tenants have normal rights. But don’t let that stop your imagination running wild. I was simply explaining how a person can become an accidental landlord.
