Last night/this morning.

Meanwhile..

This morning.

Ukraine’s ambassador to Ireland, Larysa Gerasko, held back tears this morning telling RTE she “cannot believe this is happening in the 21st century”,

“My thoughts are with my people, with my family,” she said. She condemned the “cynical” attack of Russia on her country, which she said started just as the Russian federation was making its speech to an emergency UN security council.

“Putin is testing Ukraine and the security architecture of the whole world,” she said.

Gerakso told RTE:

The devastating and tough sanctions have to be imposed now immediately. Millions of lives are at stake now, life of Ukrainians, the democratic world has to isolate Russia by all means. And Ukraine needs financial support and humanitarian assistance, and of course military.

The foreign minister, Simon Coveney, told RTE that EU diplomats, including the two Irish representatives, had moved to a safe place in Kyiv and would be meeting in the next half hour.

The Queen of false equivalence strikes again- one if a liberal democracy the other is a an autocracy… If you wish to be a quisling a apparatchik and apologist for real totalitarianism then so be it you can no doubt rely on your echo chamber here.

        2. stephen moran

I think you actually believe that Wag the Dog was real. Wake up & smell the cordite and feel the shrapnel. It’s no irony that the real Russian embassy is in Orwell Road. George would have some fairly firm views on your Canada v Russia false narrative.

          1. Me so Harney

That narrative exists only in your warped little mind, cherry picked from intelligence service rags such as the guardian.

You have no thoughts of your own.

Orwell would be throwing his head back with laughter at you..

          1. Chris

An idiot is someone who’s believes everyone shares the same thoughts (or lack of) as themselves. And you are?

          2. SOQ

Remember when men used to say- why buy the whole cow when you just want a drop of milk?

Now women say- why buy the whole pig when all you want is a bit of sausage.

    1. Aunt Feb

Hey Jo, what do you think the connection between vaccine deaths and the fake war is? I know they are related and all part of a bigger plan but I am struggling to work it out. Just a plain old fashioned cover up?

  1. ANO

Heartbreaking listening and talking to colleagues from in and around that part of the world this morning.

The West needs to bite the bullet and accept the pain that will come with enforcing proper sanctions on Russia. Much easier said than done.

Ireland needs to make it clear that we will provide a haven for those forced to flee the region.

    1. Chris

“Ireland needs to make it clear that we will provide a haven for those forced to flee the region.” Yes, if Ireland is known for anything, it’s cheap and abundent housing stock must surely be top of the list.

          1. ANO

Well I can always rustle up some ham sandwiches.

The broader point is that as a small nation we’re limited in the help we can provide but looking after our share of refugees shouldn’t be beyond us.

          2. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

I do agree, I just hope for once we don’t do a half arse job. My x husband’s family are from Odessa, my heart goes out to the people of the Ukraine.

          3. ANO

            Very valid concerns, unfortunately.

Chris is right above that we’ve made a hames of our local housing market too but that’s a separate issue.

          1. Oro

That’s a bit creepy Chris. If I was being a bit suggestive I’d say that could end you up on a list ;)

          2. Fearganainm

‘Haram’ means forbidden, presumably ‘harem’ was intended but he’s dropped an ‘e’ again.

    2. f_lawless

The world is a complex place and its impossible to have a deep understanding of everything that is happening in its various regions. But why is it that time and time again we content ourselves with simplistic narratives propagated by corporate media and seem to forget that the underlying function of said media is to shape the general public’s perception of the world according to elites with vested interests? And in the case of western corporate media there’s clearly an Anglocentric slant on everything. NATO is being led by those with noble intentions trying to keep the world safe from the evil baddie Putin who wants to destroy the world, etc.

The biggest humanitarian disaster caused by an ongoing proxy war is hardly given a second thought by most because for years now, it’s been largely ignored by corporate media.(Yemen) If this time next month, the decision was made to stop covering the situation in Ukraine, the reality is that most wouldn’t give it a second thought – out of sight out of mind -and it would be on to the next thing that corporate media serves up to us.

    1. SOQ

Yes everyone MUST comply with the narrative, no dissent will be tolerated.

Now where have we heard that before eh?

    1. Aunt Feb

It is so strange, do you think it is anything to do with the truckers or maybe Israel and the fourth shot??

^That’s the ‘official’ state thinking and directives that Putin enacts.

However, he’s an accolyte of WEF, was fully on board with the ‘vaccination’ program – and is implementing CBDCs with the rest of GlobalCap.

Ukraine is probably going to be a handy flashpoint for the considerable future. I don’t believe any of the oligarchicaly anywhere actually care for kinship or statehoods of the past.

        1. Aunt Feb

Interesting take Chris, at this point the only thing I can think of is Vladimir is trying to stoke a civil war in the USA. Trump says he is very, very good friends with Putin, Im not sure if he has his number or not but what if, lets say, Vlad says I do not recognise Joe as the rightful president but in fact Donald and will only talk to him? That might be enough for both sides of the states to ‘go and get their guns’
That or he is just feeding the WEF take over and wants everyone on the digital ID system and social credit scores. Or is it just to cover up all the vaccine/mask deaths coming in Russia, the sputnik I have heard is one of the worst for death.

          1. Chris

The first link I shared in this thread is from Putin’s office – it’s a decent telling of the historical and perhaps future direction of the Ukraine. It’s a 20 minute read, but more informative that what you’ll find in the Western press.

The second is a great podcast with Whitney Webb, it deals with Sputnik V and the oligarchs, again, far more informative than the Western and Russian press.

It’s hard to predict the timelines, but I’d see events as more to do with oligarchal zoning issues, than national interests. The Ukraine is strategically important for many reasons.

  3. The Millie Obnoxious™

What’s another war compared to the epic game of one-upmanship between the broadsheet commentariat?

    Well done lads.

      1. The Millie Obnoxious™

What’s happening is that Russia is invading Ukraine, and, as you can see above, what’s more important to some folks here is point-scoring.

Have you seen the footage of people trying to leave Kyiv? It’s awful, terrifying, devastating. Scary times ahead.

        1. Me so Harney

Russia are not, and have no plans to invade Ukraine.

Russia have recognised the eastern provinces as independent states..

          17.4% of Ukraine is Russian.

Russia is merely looking out for the ethnic Russians living there.

        2. Micko

Ah yup. I meant the nuances of the situation in relation to what’s happening and WHY the invasion is happening.

I don’t know anything about it and wouldn’t claim to have an educated opinion on it tbh.

“Have you seen the footage of people trying to leave Kyiv?”

          I haven’t.

          1. andrew

            Genuinely interested, Micko:

How come you’re reluctant to speculate wildly and proffer uninformed opinions on a foreign policy/humanitarian issue but all too happy to do precisely that when it’s a public health/science issue?

          2. Johnny

…unlike say the US Hemp industry that was federally legalized under the Farm Act 2018,setting for the first time regulations.
Prior to this there were many ‘grey market’ or unlicensed companies, very similar to Ireland, today.
Just google a load nonsense and lash it up,throw up some childhood taunts and bullying.

          3. Micko

“but all too happy to do precisely that when it’s a public health/science issue?”

Because I’m educated in science at 3rd degree level Andrew.

            I’m not in this issue.

          4. Johnny

You know nothing, about hemp or cbd, didn’t stop you compulsively flooding the zone with a barrage of irrelevant garbage and name calling ,to cover up your lack of education.

          5. Micko

“You know nothing, about hemp or cbd”

            You’d be surprised. ;)

I just don’t feel the need to bring it up all the time…

“Because I’m educated in science at 3rd degree level Andrew.”

Your probably the dumbest commentator on here, when on shaky ground, like your whole diatribe on cbd/farm act ,which is usual, you evoke my father,daddy,money,daddy-why ?

Why do you feel the need,is it to mask, your crippling insecurity to name call and bully, are you intellectually lacking ?

How many Johnny names have you made up ?

What’s this even mean .,,, I’m educated in science at 3rd degree level Andrew.…

You came barreling into that exchange about cbd dog treats, late and wrong, bullying and shouting,I can only image the dread on local restaurants when you and your big mouth approach.

You know nothing about hemp, nada, zilch,it does not contain much if any thc-duh !

It’s like that time I came home and the cat was covered in her own excrement ( and the walls) because the dog interrupted her mid-defecation.

  4. Hughie Luas

Local lad on Broadsheet concerned some Russian troops might have been vaccinated. Calls for freedom in Ukraine.

  5. Broadbag

Putin dressing down his spy chief over the Ukraine ‘issue’ is quite the watch:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLOo_HNkT-8

Spy chief may not be around much longer considering he has displeased Putin and mistakenly/deliberately jumped ahead and said he supports including the disputed territories in the Russian Federation. Putin’s reaction would be funny were it not such a grave situation and were he not such a despot.

  6. Gavin

Pity there wasnt an outcry as far back as 2014, when Donbass was being shelled into the dark ages, easier to ignore it as it wasn’t a problem affecting the rest of Europe

    1. Kali

I think the line is, it only appeared on RT therefore it’s Russian propaganda. It is sad that its come this far. I’ve friends from eastern Europe and the way they were treated after the Soviet Union broke up was shocking. Not too dissimilar from Catholics in the north back in the day.

Those countries are still at it too, banning all Russian language TV and carrying out parades to celebrate those who fought the soviets during WW2. So Nazi day parades :( I’m not in favour of countries losing their sovereignty, but there’s only so far you can push people before they push back. It would have been nice to see the Ukraine/Russia sort this out without violence, but with the yanks sticking their oar in and Joe Bidens son and his energy business lurking in the back, it just didn’t happen.

      1. Chris

Yes, to imagine the EU/USA as the good guys in this scenario is beyond absurd. The Ukraine has actual funded Neo-Nazis, not imaginary ones.

        1. Kali

Getting the neo-nazis in to do their dirty work was akin to the UK using black and tans. It was easily used against them and legitimised the rebellious regions in the eyes of many Russians

    2. SOQ

I agree. After the most blatant CoVid-19 propaganda campaign, I get the feeling we are being told what to be afraid of again. We are definately not hearing the full story. The Russian government did not just wake up one morning and decide to invade Ukraine.

      1. andrew

“The Russian government did not just wake up one morning and decide to invade Ukraine”

You’re not really this stupid, are you?

          1. andrew

Because it is blatantly obvious why Russia has taken this action. The “We are definately not hearing the full story” is just disingenuous tripe because he doesn’t want to come out with his loony notions (that lots here share) that he has picked up from the same YouTube and Facebook channels that fed him the anti-vax narrative earlier. Not yet, at least. It’s no coincidence that the antivax, covid-denying crackpots are also pro-Trump, pro-Putin etc. And yet you castigate others from being unable to think critically. You’re all a joke – people with inferiority complexes, unresolved trauma who take your ‘education’ from Facebook. Actually kind of pathetic, but I do try to be compassionate.

The “full story” is there for all of us to see. Russia has legitimate concerns and it has been baited by the West – and the US sure as hell would not tolerate the same situation unfolding in Canada or Mexico. Can we understand Russia’s action? Absolutely. Would the US do the exact same thing if it found itself in this situation? Absolutely. Does that make Russia’s actions justified or justifiable? No.

          2. SOQ

Ok I shall ignore the insults because they say way more about you than anyone else. I have very little knowledge on this subject which is why I am asking the question.

They only thing you have said of any relevance is-

Russia has legitimate concerns and it has been baited by the West – and the US sure as hell would not tolerate the same situation unfolding in Canada or Mexico.

            How have they been baited?

          3. andrew

            “So no link”
I’m expressing a personal opinion, you utter dunce. Why would I provide a link? Is that just some auto-response you spunk out without thinking?

“Pro trump “anti-vax… You’re a busted flush andrew..”
I understand it must sting to see your worldview presented in stark idiot-exposing terms but, you know, you can always educate yourself,

“There’s literally no official narrative you don’t slavishly parrot verbatim..”
Is an acknowledgement that Russia has legitimate grievances and that the West’s condemnation is hypocritical part of the “official narrative”? I didn’t actually hear that from Boris or Biden or anyone else actually. Link please? Or are you just a “busted flush” spouting unthought-out reactionary rubbish again?

      2. Kali

The first casualty of war SOQ. Must be why the UK are in a rush to block russia today. The last two years have clearly shown that governments prefer that citizens don’t ask questions and just blindly follow their narrative, it’s just good business for them. So many have failed to see this.

He’s a proven maniacal murderous psychopath and I’m convinced he has no issue bombing the bejesus out of and wiping out much of our world including his own. The Baltics are next, and, that’s when it’s gonna get real ugly.

    1. Gavin

Most world leaders we’ve seen have no issue with bombing the bejesus out of and wiping out much of our world.

    2. Horsethieving Dopesniffer

Attacking any of EU or NATO members would not be a wise move.
After all, some of them are their main customers for gas, oil and other raw materials.
This is about the control of gas lines going from their gas fields and into the Europe.

The best way for Ukraine to retaliate would be to shut down those lines right now. But I don’t see it happening. Guess why.

        1. andrew

          It’s “throes”, you fool.

Is there no Facebook group for basic education?

You going to ask for a link, aren’t you?

          Hehehehehe

    3. Kali

Calm down lad and give the Bond movies a rest. The lines of dreams and reality are starting to blur for you. Never go full Dougal

  8. Fergalito

14000 people have been killed in the Ukraine since 2014. You’d think it was a peaceful idyll if you consumed your news in half glances and snapshot headlines.

Putin is a poster boy for nothing more than his self aggrandising narcissism and the venal modes through which he serves to enrich his coterie of yes men while trampling on the basic rights I think most agree should be the hallmarks of a civilised society. That doesn’t wash the hands of the international community opposed to him, hypocrisy is always close by. If you’re against him then I’m for you? Simplistic nonsense.

While the luxury of the academic (and at times moronic) positing on the ideological merits or otherwise of the Western versus Russian (if you will) worldviews, just like in all bloody conflicts, it’s cold and unsympathetic comfort to the civilian wounded, civilian casualties and families who just want to get on with their lives. Sorry, wanted to get on with their lives.

How in the Republic can we opine rationally and with experience on the horror of conflict when during the Troubles, a matter of metres from our border, we were mere tangents to the circle.

Sympathy and sorrow is for those caught up in the midst of this appalling vista. I’m always minded of WH Auden’s “Death of a Tyrant” when faced with the likes of what’s happening a thousand kms from our shores:-

“Perfection, of a kind, was what he was after,
    And the poetry he invented was easy to understand;
He knew human folly like the back of his hand,
    And was greatly interested in armies and fleets;
When he laughed, respectable senators burst with laughter,
And when he cried the little children died in the streets”

  9. Aunt Feb

Seems a lot of people are asking the same questions and a lot of confusion. I have the utmost confidence that both Bodger and Nick Kelly are on the case right now to get us the real answers to these questions. Also E’ Matty has not appeared yet, if I was to put my money on anyone blowing this thing wide open (after Bodge and KN obvs) it would be him. Praying to God that the legacy media has not tried to silence him.
