Win Nick’s Esteem [Extended]

at

Thank Felix it’s Friday.

Gather round, readers. The vinyl-breaking theme for this week’s voucher-less music banter comes courtesy of our valued Trailer Park key-holder Andy Pipkin.

Andy writes:

“As a suggestion for today’s competition may I suggest your favourite song about cheating!! Here’s mine.”

You may.

And here’s mine.

Lines must close at 5.15pm 10.45pm Saturday 10am.

Please include video link if possible.

Last week I asked you to name your favourite song about or mentioning stars. You answered in your tens.

Ben Madigan won my esteem with this entry…

Teenage Fanclub – Star Sign

Ben writes:

“Is your star sign ever wrong?”

“A classic slice of melodic guitar power pop from 1991’s Bandwagonesque.”

Nick says: Congrats Ben and thanks to y’all for entering.

Last week: Win Nick’s Esteem

Even better Marianne faithful why’d you do it
A song in homage to mick jagger broken English
As she sings you feel her heart broken and the pure rage of being betrayed
And the lyrics are not pleasant but brilliant

By the time it was revealing”

Like a rolling stone aimed no doubt at a girl that broke Dylan’s heart at college
I would say she wounded him pretty hard
      The lyrics wow

Oh, I was only twenty four hours from Tulsa
Ah, only one day away from your arms
I hate to do this to you but I love somebody new, what can I do?
And I can never, never, never—go home again

Apart from the deceit, and the pain that brings, something happens afterwards- a mourning if you like.

But, despite the damage done, and as part of the healing process, it is perfectly fine to tell him or her that you miss them. Things will never be the same again, collective memories are good.

Also, let them carry their own inadequacies.

No, it’s not a song about a trend towards increased feminisation of males in modern society, it’s a song about cheating :p

“Young man you too girlie girlie
You jus a flash it round the worldie.
    Him have one up here
    One down there
    One in Hannover
    One down a vere.
    One she’s a lawyer
    One she’s a doctor..”

For a bit of guilty pleasure bit of kitch there’s “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” by Rupert Holmes or a few crowd pleasers such as the ubiquitous, Mr. Brightside (Killers) ; Lyin’ Eyes (Eagles): the wonderfully bitchy Say Hello Wave Goodbye by Soft Cell or an underrated gem “Human” by The Human League but I’d agree for cheatin’ country is the go to genre. So whilst for me while its a toss up between Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris with “We’ll Sweep The Ashes Out In The Morning” but I opted for Gram in an earlier post Byrds Sweetheart of the Rodeo incarnation; a country supergroup – The Flying Burrito Brothers – from the wonderfully titled album “The Gilded Palace of Sin” a song murdered in The Commitments- but here as it should be sung – “At the Dark End of the Street”

Yes I know James Carr did the soulful original – which is quite a banger version.

I do apologise, I posted this below but you had bate me to it

      1. stephen moran

No worries – i always cheat a bit by posting a Smörgåsbord of tunes as i can never decide – still Mr. Brightside a good crowd pleaser ditty – if a little dark

  8. Ben Madigan

Woohoo thanks Nick! I will treasure your esteem for ever… well for the rest of the evening anyway.

Another good theme from Andy – surprised no-one has thrown this one in yet:

    Hey Joe
Where you going with that gun in your hand
I’m going down to shoot my old lady
You know I caught her messing round with another man

    https://youtu.be/rXwMrBb2x1Q

    Jimi Hendrix version of course

  9. Fergalito

Pretty hard to top Nick’s pick which I’d happily listen to on rotation all day long. Fantastic tune from a fantastic band. Well done Ben, The Fannies were always close to my heart.

I love Screaming Jay Hawkins and I really love this cover of “I Put a Spell on You” by Nina Simone. So that’s my choice.

“You better stop the things you do
    I tell you, I ain’t lying
    I ain’t lying”

      1. Mad

The gods may throw a dice
Their minds as cold as ice
        And someone way down here
        Loses someone dear
The winner takes it all (takes it all)
The loser has to fall (has to fall)
It’s simple and it’s plain (it’s so plain)
Why should I complain? (Why complain?)
But tell me, does she kiss
Like I used to kiss you?
        Does it feel the same
        When she calls your name?
        Somewhere deep inside
You must know I miss you
        But what can I say?
        Rules must be obeyed
The judges will decide (will decide)
The likes of me abide (me abide)
Spectators of the show (of the show)
        Always staying low (staying low)
The game is on again (on again)
A lover or a friend (or a friend)
A big thing or a small (big or small)
The winner takes it all (takes it all)

      2. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

        ABBA ! ah hear….now that’s playing dirty !

          Braver la morale

the next theme should be songs about regret or lack of at this rate ;)

      We watched Castaway there Janet
I gotta admit I was fairly disgusted when she got in the car at the end – like you’re married with a kid FFS

SPIRITUALIZED – THE BEST THING YOU NEVER HAD (THE D SONG)

“Honey, you’re laid in doubt, you’re never getting anything done
Oh, you’re wasting time, you best let the water run
Oh, your eyes light up, the best thing you ever knew
Honey, you best sit down, the good times will come to you
Honey, you lived that life, you’re never getting out for free

*Honey, you walked that walk, you’ll never walk back to me*

Gonna be a long ride down
Come on, Holly, we’ll take it from here”

I have no clue if Holly cheated on him, but… “you’ll never walk back to me” says things just aren’t going well for this lad and Holly :)

Playing tonight in The Olympia, WOOHOO! Gonna be deadly! :)

Is it still cheating if you encouraged it because you really like to watch..?
