I dug my old cricket bat out this week – it’s a wonderful blade of wood made from English willow by Gunn & Moore that has seen flashing cover drives but also plenty of nicks to slip as evidenced by the myriad of red marks on the edges.
It smells of the fresh coat of linseed oil I apply every year to keep it in tip top condition for the occasional appearance.
Last week the club cricket season started in Blighty and I’m popping over next week for a fund-raising match for our local club.
This is my favourite time of the sporting calendar – it’s the business end of both the footy and rugger seasons with the FA Cup today and semi-finals and play-offs in different leagues and cups coming up.
The county cricket season has been underway for a while – always a challenge in May for the spinners – and the international season is not far off.
England’s first Test opponents are the excellent New Zealand made all the more interesting because their great former batsman Brendan McCullen has just been appointed England’s head coach.
He was a brilliant, inspirational batsman and skipper in his day and is teaming up with the newly-appointed England captain the mercurial Ben Stokes.
And beyond May stretches a glorious summer of the sound of leather on willow, rippling applause from the regulars at the village pub.
And newly re-allowed post-Covid cream teas.
All across England pensioners and school kids are playing in the same teams in hotly contested matches and none more so than in the Asian leagues in the North – a nursery of exceptional cricketing talent that regularly produces some of our internationals.
