Fairly stinging rebuke to Conor Burns / DUP/ Tories over their Protocol grandstanding shenanigans from the bipartisan US Ad Hoc Committee to Protect GFA this evening. I certainly sussed the ruse. The last line is a the coup de grâce. .

“Can’t say we agreed. GB protection of GFA seems narrowly focused on Unionist consent for Protocol which is creating jobs & new N/S economic lanes. Need progress on Irish Language, legacy, BoR as well. Fear that PM is using NI again.”

  2. GiggidyGoo

When will this Wagina Monologues pantomime be over? And why is it such a newsworthy item for the likes of RTE to spend time on?

    Amazing headlines
The hospitality is urged not to price gouge
The only industry supermarkets everything from fuel to food and again hospitality are the villains soon restaurants pubs
It’s time government sent in a agency to stop price gouging all ove from every aspect of industry
A great one was the €200 energy grant to help the public
Firer thing the energy companies was deduct VAT on you credit which should nit be taxed then put the 13.5% tax on the usage instead a doublr Irish tax of 27% Vat which Iis actually doubled

It was clever the way she decided only “working Royals” could attend her Jubilee. Such astute manoeuvring helps explain her endurance in such a long innings.
      She won’t get fooled again!

  4. Mad

Surprised no one has commented on everyone’s favourite Parish. Let us all congregate him on his return to politics and obviously high, almost priapic self-esteem.

    1. GiggidyGoo

I believe he has now dropped his fetish for tractors, and as now taken an interest in air conditioning. He’s an extractor fan.

  5. Mad

I can’t read that text under the Tartgraph picture.
Can someone please explain to me why yer wan is a “victim” in inverted commas?

  6. Mad

I learned a new acronym yesterday – BOGOF – Buy
One Get One Free ( the cheap food deal story).
Funny enough I thought of Fat Tan and Fat Tart almost immediately.

It seems nowadays WAGS are both obscene and heard – no one ever complained about George Best’s tackle. Ode for ja bit of jumpers for goalposts.

  8. TenPin Terry

19 posts in so far and nearly all are about the news in Blighty.
It’s either because Ireland is too dull and unimportant to have any news or lots of people on here suffer from an overwhelming inferiority complex.

Frankly our news today is unspeakable Fat Tan
Ugly bitch nuns putting their vaginas all over our healthcare and unspeakably ugly fat sows feeding at the troughs of Siteserv, holiday sites and building sites. Have at it old chap

      1. Mad

If you read through that thread you’ll see he waffles on a bit about grapefruit juice, jumbo breakfasts and the like as well: no wonder our public health services are under such endless strain

      1. GiggidyGoo

And there’s that term once again “ on secondment” in that report. Ms. Fagan didn’t declare a conflict of interest either.

Mother of God. the Board member is married to a guy who’s firm happened to represent a developer on a different planning application. Yet you conspiracy theory loons have to take issue. get a job. I have a cat with more intellectual ability.

          1. GiggidyGoo

How about reading up a bit more on it anti bot before making an idiot of yourself?

Glenn Greenwald- The Bizarre, Unanimous Dem Support for the $40b War Package to Raytheon and CIA: “For Ukraine”

“The US Anti-War Left is Dead. The Squad’s $40b War Vote Just Killed It.” Many Dems voting YES have long denounced exactly these sorts of bills. What happened?

The extreme speed with which this was all approved means there is little to no oversight over how the funds will be spent, who will profit and how much, and what the effects will be for Ukraine and the world.

What made this Democratic Party unanimity so bizarre, even surreal, is that many of these House Democrats who voted YES have spent years vehemently denouncing exactly these types of war expenditures.

    https://greenwald.substack.com/p/the-bizarre-unanimous-dem-support

    1. Mad

      Not bizarre at all though
Review the Gulf War Ii escapade
There was only one noteworthy Dem at the time who opposed it – Sen Robert Byrd.
As Gore Vidal said in the US there is only one party – the Property Party – and it has two right wings.
Everything else is either posturing or at the fringes

      1. SOQ

Maybe at a Senator level but the point is that the anti war movement has always been left wing- which was a space held by the Democrats.

Now, everything seems to have flipped on its head and it is the Democrats who are hawks. Who would have guessed that the Mitchell and Webb: “Are we the baddies?” sketch was actually a prophesy?

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToKcmnrE5oY

Particularly pertinent after Zelenskyy posted a picture of one of his brave warriors on the 2nd of May wearing- yes you guessed it- a Nazi skull emblem.

        1. Nigel

Sending aid to an ally who has been invaded is not hawkish. Allowing Putin to invade whoever he wants is not anti-war. ‘Denazification’ is the WMDs of this invasion.

Also, are you sure it was a Nazi skull emblem? Lots of non-Nazi soldiers love their skull emblems. Remember when you accused Zelensky of having a Nazi iron cross emblem on his t-shirt? You have such form.

          1. GiggidyGoo

“ Lots of non-Nazi soldiers love their skull emblems”
The daily stupidity has started early.

          2. GiggidyGoo

It’s all Nazi – inclined soldiers who have those. They get them after their first kill. They are Deaths Head as worn by Hitlers SS.

          3. Nigel

This doesn’t disagree with the statement ‘lots of non-Nazi soldiers love their skull emblems’ which you called ‘stupidity.’

          4. Nigel

So we’re getting into the ‘busted flush’ phase of the discussion. Edifying. Let’s not bother. You may now have the last word.

          5. Chris

I have to say, I do enjoy Giggs regular eviscerations of Nigel. They show the wide chasm between one with integrity – and one without.

Catty quips and bad faith arguments are the sum of his arsenal. Her regular patient chipping away helps make it apparent for all, just what he’s about.

          6. Nigel

I’m genuinely curious as to how, exactly, you think Giggidy eviscerated me?

-Nazi soldiers wear skulls, but not all soldiers wearing skulls are Nazis.

-SOQ previously erroneously claimed a Ukrainian military emblem was a Nazi iron cross.

Where, exactly, did Giggidy ‘eviscerate’ any of this?

        2. Mad

          Not really SOQ
It has even been thus really in the full analysis
Go read up on your Chomsky for example
          And come back to us

    2. Nigel

How many aid packages for democratic countries being invaded by neighbouring tyrannies have Dems opposed? Because that’s what ‘these types of expenditures’ means.

The subtext of course is he’s mad at them for making it hard for Putin to to take over Ukraine.

      1. bisted

…we know these things Nigel…but call them what they are…proxy wars fought on behalf of the US…but only if it’s the right kind of democracy…your type…

        1. Nigel

The Ukrainians are fighting on behalf of themselves because they’ve been invaded by a tyrant. It’s definitely not a fight between ‘types’ of democracies. Russia isn’t a democracy, and Ukraine won’t be one either if Putin wins.

          1. Mad

You’re an embarrassment and a habitual liar.
I used to have some grudging respect for you because we do share passions for both the environment and broadly leftist ideas. Your wit.
            And erudition.
But now every time I see your byline I am mostly just cringing at what precedes it, or trying to unsee it if possible

    3. K. Cavan

Or as (Noam) Chomsky said: “In the US, you get to choose between the Pro-business Party & the Rabidly Pro-business Party”.
Democrats have actually been more warmongering than Republicans for decades, now. The Wokists keep voting for them because they’ll give them the right to marry their dog or whatever, they’re all too dumb to even know that the rest of the world exists, never mind that the US bombs it. There’s a lot of people alive now who’d be dead if Trump hadn’t beaten Killary. She loves war, well, not war but raining cruise missiles down on defenceless civilians, the US version of War. O’Bama was a hoor for terrorist drone attacks on weddings, 300,000 bombs on countries he never declared war on, no wonder they love the degenerate Ukronazis, who I see are spreading the hate, 2 murders already, the one in Poland was horrific, 5 or 6 of them stabbing a guy to death who’d intervened when they hassled a girl in the street. It won’t be in the news, natch.

      1. SOQ

There is a video doing the rounds of one of them finding a severed limb of a Russian solder- he cooked and ate it.

THAT is what we are supposed to be cheering on as liberators.

        1. Nigel

          ‘liberators.’

Slip of the tongue there. The Ukrainians are defnders. The Russians are ‘liberators.’ You don’t have to cheer anyone on, you just have to acknowledge who invaded who.

      2. Nigel

Trump escalated drone attacks and bombings, but he also reduced oversight and accountability, so that’s okay.

The alleged degenerate Ukronazis wouldn’t be in Poland if Putin hadn’t invaded.

    1. Mad

Yes I can see indeed how they take that view in it.
But for others like me it held up a clear lens to how vacuous, insipid and empty all those Trinners types are.
      Maybe unintentionally?

    1. SOQ

Many years ago I worked for a man who had dealings with the upper echelons of the civil service. According to him, such people felt they were the real government, and that Dáil Éireann was just a side show- ‘Yes Minister’ sort of thing.

This sort of arrogant behaviour and extremely questionable decisions made over hospitals like the Children’s and Maternity, indicates that he was right.

      1. Mad

        He’s 100% correct.
And it’s the same in US and UK
That’s why Trump and the Irish guy tried to clean house

I dug my old cricket bat out this week – it’s a wonderful blade of wood made from English willow by Gunn & Moore that has seen flashing cover drives but also plenty of nicks to slip as evidenced by the myriad of red marks on the edges.
It smells of the fresh coat of linseed oil I apply every year to keep it in tip top condition for the occasional appearance.
Last week the club cricket season started in Blighty and I’m popping over next week for a fund-raising match for our local club.
This is my favourite time of the sporting calendar – it’s the business end of both the footy and rugger seasons with the FA Cup today and semi-finals and play-offs in different leagues and cups coming up.
The county cricket season has been underway for a while – always a challenge in May for the spinners – and the international season is not far off.
England’s first Test opponents are the excellent New Zealand made all the more interesting because their great former batsman Brendan McCullen has just been appointed England’s head coach.
He was a brilliant, inspirational batsman and skipper in his day and is teaming up with the newly-appointed England captain the mercurial Ben Stokes.
And beyond May stretches a glorious summer of the sound of leather on willow, rippling applause from the regulars at the village pub.
And newly re-allowed post-Covid cream teas.

All across England pensioners and school kids are playing in the same teams in hotly contested matches and none more so than in the Asian leagues in the North – a nursery of exceptional cricketing talent that regularly produces some of our internationals.
And don’t forget Ireland – two T20 matches at home to the mighty India and an ODI also in Dublin against the Kiwis.
This week for me really feels like the start of summer.
It’s the smell of linseed oil that always does it.
    Howzat ?

Hey The Papers’ comments section is actually readable today for the first time in about three weeks. Only one or two “trying to start a row” type posts.
More of this please Broadsheet. It’s refreshing on this lively sunny day

    1. TenPin Terry

      You’re welcome Tarfton old sport.
One tries to maintain an interesting, readable and hopefully humourous presence on here despite the pondlife one has to deal with.
Goodness, imagine what they’re like in real life.
      Doesn’t bear thinking about.
      Quite lonely I’d say …

    2. K. Cavan

Just don’t mention the war, Tarfton, I did earlier but I think I got away with it. That way we can talk about important stuff.
Actually, don’t even mention not mentioning the war & don’t read this.

  13. K. Cavan

With the Guardian informing us that “the golden era of cheap food is over” & Jess Phillips in The Independent (UK) breaking the news that “high living costs are hurting women”, I think we can all look forward to less uglies in Lidl in their ludicrous lyrca ensembles.
Enjoy this Summer like it’s your last, I reckon.

This slogan is by the former Sainsbury’s boss Justin King who sits on the board of Marks and Spencer. During his tenure with Sainsburys, he oversaw the biggest price hikes the supermarket chain has ever seen. Think going from Dunnes prices to near M&S.

At least he has an excuse now for more gouging.
