Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band came out on this day in 1967.
Is this The Beatles’ best album? pic.twitter.com/gGIlKzRIp6— Consequence (@consequence) May 26, 2022

Mop top maniacs assemble.

White Album
Hands down
No doubt about it.
+1
Without a doubt
Yes. Correct
Question is wrong
‘It was 55 years today…’ doesn’t scan I suppose.
there is no best
…well there was and then Ringo showed up!
Ah for Pete’s sake..
Ah poor auld Ringo gets a hard time and unfairly so – that said i love the “he’s not even the best drummer in The Beatles” quote from whichever of the other three said it, Lennon probably.
I love that story.
But I found out recently that it’s not true*. ;-(
Apparently it was a joke by Jasper Carrot in the 80’s.
________
*Sorry to be “that guy”
No worries Micko – I’d rather the truth got in the way of that particular good story. Ringo was a great drummer, only fitting really that his bandmates didn’t pull the piss out of his abilities. I guess when you’re in a band with Lennon and McCartney it’s hard to put the head up above the parapet by comparison.
Glad to see you rate The White Album so highly too, that’s a tick in the “things I like about Micko” column
Micko is sound I’d happily go for a pint with him, equally opinionated and rational in his discussions
Cheers gents!
Except john Lennon
Highly attractive album cover. There are still many lonely hearts around – read the lonely hearts ads in the Farmers Journal weekly mag.
Abbey Road is their most complete achievement. Revolver is probably their most important record in that it really introduced the concept of album tracks i.e. semi popular less immediate but ultimately more rewarding songs that replayed with a higher utility (satisfaction) upon repeat listening. Sgt Peppers has a couple of buffers on it.
Early demos of Rolling Stones “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction” were titled “I Can’t Get No Higher Utility” apparently although this may not be true…
Lyrics written during freshers week at the LSE – maybe that’s where he acquired his alleged frugality
Interesting – he runs a tight operation for sure.
No flies on Mick or The Rolling Stones corporation.
Stones were great for about 10 – ish years but never felt them much beyond that. Love how a load of young English kids brought their version of the blues to the masses and led us back to the source. All of those wonderful recordings in the Lomax archive are a treasure trove.
The Stones were arguably the greatest blues band of all time – Exile on Main Street exhibit A for the prosecution. Let it Bleed, Beggars Banquet and Sticky Fingers are as good as its ever likely to get – from the gilded age of R ‘n’ R
I don’t dispute the greatness of those albums, you may throw Goat’s Head Soup in there too. I like their blues – it’s not that noodly solo for hours stuff more a few good chords and licks, far more feral and primal than polished. I’ll take that any day of the week.
There’s a real bang of Patrick Bateman off this one!
actually anything by Huey Lewis and the news would have been a good shout for last Friday’s crimes against music
Hahaha
When I’m 64 just came on the radio
In terms of songwriting this song alone elevated this record away above their previous work IMHO. Seemingly whimsical confection at the surface and yet profound, universally appealing and timeless at the same time.
Thought of last week’s competition when Eric Clapton “Wonderful Tonight” excreted itself from a speaker somewhere during the week.
uggh Eric provokes a visceral adverse reaction in both my current and my ex. Odd.
First LP I bought.
I still have the original (with inserts). Is it worth anything?
nah – i’ll give you a tenner for it.. P
Depends on if you actually played it and which pressing it was
If you had a copy of the original and subsequently pulled butchered dolls “Yesterday and Today” album cover you’d be in the money … !
Crowley.. Top left corner
OK, boomers.
Whassssssssuuuuuuuuupppppp!
Abbey Road.
Revolver.
Created at the very, very end of the mop top era and just as the drugs began to work too well. It also contains my favourite Beatles song: Tomorrow Never Knows
