Thank Fletch it’s Friday.
All of us here at chateau Broadsheet was gutted to hear of the untimely death of founding Depeche Mode synth guru Andy Fletcher.
An enduring icon of the 1980s and a huge influence on the subsequent electro-pop genre, Fletcher’s contribution to music will never be forgotten.
So this week I want to know: what’s your favourite Depeche Mode song and why?
Here’s mine.
Please include video links if possible.
Lines close on Saturday at Midnight.
Last week, thanks to a suggestion by Andy Pipkin, I asked for your least favourite song. You answered in your tens. But there could only be one winner.
Unmutual won my boundless ‘lack of esteem’ with this horror:
Celine Dion • My Heart Will Go On
Unmutual writes:
“Somewhere in the icy depths of the North Atlantic lies the wreck of the Titanic… and if I’m honest and had my way… it’s where this watery dose of sentimental Sonic-Cystitis would be placed for the rest of all time…”
Nick says: Congrats Unmutual and thanks to all who entered.
Last week: Win Nick’s Esteem

Gutted at the news!
Lucky enough to see them in the point, it was like a religious experience!

Funnily enough, I have pyjamas just like that!
Bodger and Nick clean up well in fairness… :-)
in fairness…

It says something about your band when you’re covered by the likes of Mr. Cash –

But I think my favorite is still Enjoy the Silence –

RIP –
A fantastic song, and one of my favourites.
There was a mildly amusing parody version by DJ Grand Theft, Enjoy the Icehouse, trying to emulate Weird Al Yankovic’s style. Apparently, the lads i Depeche Mode enjoyed it, so I present it as a slightly askew tribute:

+1
love the rapid cuts with the collasped/head in a toilet pics!
I used to do a job as a part time DJ in two clubs
One joys on Baggot street and the other shoestrings on harcourt street both in Dublin
The joys one was for older customers the other younger but both these wine joints 5 in the morning
I got so sick of the following ones
Wind under your wings Bette middler and celine Dion and that one by Jim diamond
When the punters came up and asked for any of the above 3 I would start crying
They would say oh my god are you all right
Then I would say have you been listening to the news
If they said no I told them I just am too upset to play this song because he or she was just killed in a motorway pile up and I cannot bear to play them
They then went away
Mind you bet the next morning they were raging as they scoured the news papers regarding their idols
These songs were just played to death then some more
Congrats Unmutual – bloody Celine (shudder).
On DM.
Obv I love the big tunes. But if I had to pick one, it’s probably the song that got me into the band in the first place in the late 90’s. (They totally passed me by in my teens and I had to gleefully revisit their earlier catalogue)
The video for this one was all over MTV at the time and worked it’s way into my noggin.

Just Can’t get Enough
https://youtu.be/_6FBfAQ-NDE
This has been adopted by Nottingham Forest fans as a post-match anthem this year. I hope it will be ringing around Wembley stadium after the Championship play-off final this Sunday. As a Nottingham-born lad I hope Andrew Fletcher would have appreciated it.
Congratulations, Unmutual. A very unworthy winner, indeed :-)
Really sorry to hear of the loss of Andy, and indeed Ray Liotta. These things come in threes, they say, so I was also sad to learn of the passing of Miss Tic, the artist who inspired Banksty. One musical, one thespian and one visual artist, muses all.
I too was going to say Personal Jesus, but I see I was beaten to it, and by The Man in Black’s great version. Testament to a great song, and a great band. So, feeling a little disappointed at not getting there first, I am going to go with what I think is an underrated one of theirs – Never Let Me Down Again

And another, Yes drummer Alan White dies aged 72:

I’d headed camping to Ballinasloe for the weekend.. I was 16 and went to the disco, met a gorgeous girl, we hit it off straight away, had a great laugh together and when I just can’t get enough https://youtu.be/PhIWuZnagkU came on she snogged me. I had never been snogged like that before. It was amazing. And then she led me outside and beside an old iron farm gate she gave me my first blow job. Expertly. And when she finished she just said, with a glint in her eyes, have you had enough and then, I suppose you’ll buy me a bag of chips so. I just can’t get enough is burned into my soul.
winner right there… although these days the seagulls would nick the chips, how times have changed…
Yep they are now meat eaters despised in howth and bray
Damn you and your stupid sexy teenage high-jinks CC.
Where was my 16-years of age expertly crafted small town teenage blow job with chips?
Where, I ask you. Where?
*pounds fist on table*
*becomes wistful*
*maybe sobs, maybe*
You’ll get there Fergalito
Do you get the ride in places other than County Galway Cú?
Well, as I was writing that the thought that I should make a point of visiting Galway more often did occur to me. But, events like that were few and far between making it such a memorable experience.
Thanks- that’s great reportage all the same. The chips part … OMFG
Every song I know of by Depeche Mode has been entered already.
I doubt that I’m the only one.
I think Nick allows the same song if chosen for personal reasons. I’ll ask him when he comes back. He’s at the fridge. Imbibing I trust from the carton I purchased earlier.
That was the last of the bainne. Yes, you can choose the same song no problem!
I keep my own personal reasons to myself.
You could whip it out and play ‘Reach Out And Touch Me’ on the piano.
Do your bit for Ukraine.
congratulations Unmutual
seen them nine times, twice on their last tour
one of the very best live acts, never disappointing
song? when it boils down to it has to be….
“Just Can’t Get Enough [insert obligatory extra naughty word at the 80’s disco]”
a perfect pop song
and one of a handful, Lionel, that everyone can name that tune in one for
RIP Andy Fletcher

I was never mad on Depeche Mode but master & servant is a fukn banger.

We have our differences but just listen to this one
Beethovens victory sympathy by the Berlin philharmonic orchestra with headphones under Herbert Von Karajan
As a child me granny and me got on like a house on fire regarding music
This was one of her favourites
Close your eyes and you are there
An orchestra that is more visual than a real battle
Incredible stuff
You might just like it as you enjoy a glass of whatever mellows you
Huzzah! You sunk my battleship!
Thanks Nick for the Esteem, I shall treasure it always…;-) Also Andy for suggesting the theme.
Thanks too for the congrats.
Well done on the win
Thanks for a great competition but as all the good songs are picked already I am sitting this one out
A rare Depeche ballad, sung by Martin Gore.

Snap!
Aw bother. I definitely won’t be winning then! Gorgeous song though. You have excellent taste, I must say!!

I Feel Loved
I liked their earlier albums but this from Exciter is little played. Stroll into a club and listen to that thumping bass line. Only reached number 12 in the UK Charts. Was said to read of Fletchers passing. There are remixes of this all over the gaff but this stands out
Clean

This song from the wonderful Violator either describes an aspiration or a fact. Dave Gahan and Martin Gore’s addictions were no secret yet they found it within themselves to shed light on their troubles in this brooding track.
Maybe rather than throwing my toys out of the pram (/ sorry) some minor esteem might be sought with the inclusion of acts who inspired Depeche Mode?
e.g. Siouxsie and the Banshees

Tune…!
By all accounts they were big admirers
of the legendary Frank Tovey / Fad Gadget…
from their 1981 Mute “Incontinent” LP:

As I’m only a young pup, my introduction to Depeche Mode was the dark driving guitar of the lead single from “Songs of Faith and Devotion” and its accompanying black and white Anton Corbijn video, I was surprised to afterwards discover their electronic 1980s origins.
