Via RTÉ:

…Gardaí have used anti-spit hoods 118 times while policing during the coronavirus pandemic, according to a report from the Policing Authority.

The hoods, the use of which has been criticised by both the Authority and the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, have been used 100 times on males, 18 times on females and six times on children.

They have been deployed mainly in Dublin (on 51 occasions) and mostly during assaults and public order incidents – 54 times for public order offences and 34 times during an assault.

In 79 cases, the person appeared to be intoxicated, while in 16 cases the detainee was believed to have a mental health issue. In one case, the person was perceived to have “obvious signs of a learning disability“.

A bit like covid that one, died with one on not from one, by reading that article it sounded like the cops heavy handed tactics which is usual for that part of the world!

Cant see how u could die from having one on. Not pleasant I would agree but neither is being spat at.

Dealing with scumbags is part of the job. It’s not nice – but it’s not a nice job.

The real problem is when Guards start putting people into them for being a little bit lippy

I’m sure that never happens though…

Oh seriously, it’s alright for people to spit at other people. It’s your job? What kind of low life are you? How can you even consider posting that poo poo?

          Eh calm down there Anti.

Of course it’s not ok. How are you reading that I ever said it was.

I’m saying cops have to deal with scumbags, that’s a fact. Agreed?

Should Police restrain them in a way that endangers their lives?

Me and Amnesty International think not.
