I say it’s fair game, within reason. You’d be a geehead to stay in an intern post for longer than a couple of months but it’s a handy way to bolster the CV.
It’s one way of bypassing the whole ‘You need experience for the job’ ‘But how can I get experience if none of you fucks will fire me?’.
I interned for two months and was offered a job on the basis of that ‘work’.
What’s the story with Michele?
Makes Blathnaid look presentable
i went to school with him when we all knew him as michael, or just plain ‘neylon’. then he founded blacknight solutions and came out as someone with an interesting name. think it’s a ‘mickayla’ thing, not ‘me-shell’, like white goodman’s consiglierie.
I knew him too, as a kid and in college. He was always a bit different, but sure aren’t we all. He certainly stirred a hornet’s nest with this one.
from a 2005 interview with him:
‘I think there’s a lot of hype around blogs at the moment. Once the hype dies down and the bloggers and audience mature it should become a very interesting platform for the dissemination of ideas and communication of concepts, developments or random thoughts. I’m a strong believer in the “right tool for the job” philosophy.’
i enjoy dissemination from my tool too. :(
You never see Fergal and Michael McElhatton in the same room. Just sayin’ is all.
I would have updated my profile photo if I’d known I’d end up here…
Huge. Is that a sombrero or just a boater?
It’s a plastic sombrero – I was at my cousin’s wedding in Madrid – herself and her husband are from South America so there was hats and maracas and stuff. Awesome party. Ended at 7am. An Irish/South American party is … pretty boozy.
hahaha…
nice hat funboy….
quid pro quo. know what I mean ?
You could make a successful play from the characters above. Smug Fergal and Wacky Stewart.Dont even get me started on Eamonn
This is for a niche audience ain’t it? Yis are some pack of inbreds you ‘media’ people.
If you do have any slave, I mean unpaid intern positions available do check out http://www.slaves.ie/
But in all seriousness, an unpaid internship really hurts the economy more than it’s worth. Some say it’s free training, or experience, but why would you have to pay for something like this. A 1-2 week position to show someone about an industry is fine, but asking someone to come in day in day out and do real work for your clients, work that clients pay for, is just not fair IMHO.

+100 (hours a week, unpaid)
It depresses me even more now that I wasn’t qualified enough for this unpaid internship…
There’s an awful lot of baldness going on here
Million dollar idea alert !!!
Would people pay to do internships?
Is Blacknight gone then? I would find it most humorous if it was. That chap is a total head the ball.
I’m not the Eamonn Carey just to clarify.
Captialism is hopelessly broken. People working for free, people needing to be employed to get work etc. is just a symptom of how broken it is.
Being in INTERNETZ1!! doesn’t entitle a company to use slave labour for a job which they would otherwise pay a salary for. This is no different to the corner shop deli on Fás looking for an intern and offering them ‘meat slicing’ experience.
Nobody is owed a free ride, to sit on their asses when they could be working, but its a two way street.
