This afternoon’s Evening Echo.

Councillor Deirdre Forde (Fine Gael) claims “non indigenous” are more likely to get a council home and thinks Cork County Council’s housing allocation policy is sending a message to mothers – “have as many children as you can if you want to get a council house.”

    I think a PhD student should base their research on this area and put the matter to bed once and for all.

    a) are foreigners more likely to get houses, and
    b) do people have kids to get houses

    i’m reading this as ‘my voters aren’t getting housed quick enough and therefore the council isn’t keeping the promises i’ve made to my constituents’.

    1. waiting time on a housing list is only part of the assessment of housing need. there are other factors such as homeless or medical priority. for a councillor that’s a no-brainer and she should no better, unless she hasn’t read her own scheme.

    2. out of 22 allocations she’s checked names and determined they were non-indigenous presumable without checking whether those persons were born here. either way, it’s a moot point as housing should be allocated based on need. if a non-national has a stamp 4 then they can apply like everyone else.

      It’s like the time half my family, immediate and extended, were caught in a pub celebrating some couples wedding anniversary and when raided at 3am the Gardaí took all the names.
      On the day in court, the judge decided that the women were brought there by the men. My Uncle Francis got off scot free… :)

      So yeah, running down a list of surnames is probably what this lazy councilor has done
