Venezuela has been a disaster for its citizens over the last number of years, don’t know if the left caused it but if they didn’t they seem completely ineffectual in preventing it. Very depressing.
The government of Venezuela – regardless of its place on the political spectrum – has been an unalloyed disaster for the last decade or more.

Is it not under sanctions?

I think some of these sanctions are to do with human rights violations by Venezuelan leaders but I can’t recall any more detail. Either way, the country’s been driven into the ground by Chavismo.

Ah, but as long as they’re all down in the dirt together, that’s equality, innit?

In brief, Venezuela’s in a mess for a few simple reasons
1) They spent their oil money instead of investing it.
2) The economy was completely dependant on imports (i.e. they manufactured practically nothing).
3) They set in stone the exchange rate with the dollar.
4) They thenfailed utterly to react to the drop in oil prices which meant less bolivars for the oil but the same number of bolivars per dollar which hit import costs and collapsed the economy.

Surely they can just go to the magic money tree PBP/AAA say exists?
