Teresa Treacy, age 65, from Tullamore, will go to prison if she refuses to allow ESB workers on to her property to cut down trees to make way for an overhead power line. Previously she has “put herself in the path of workers and machinery” in an effort to “protect the natural environment”.

A High Court judge said yesterday that if she wasn’t punished with a custodial sentence “Ireland may as well sink into anarchy.”

That’s how TV3 reported the case last night.

TV3 didn’t carry the full story. She did offer the ESB access to the land. In fact she’s tried to talk to them for over 5 years but they refused any dialogue. She offered to let them go underground as is the standard in EU.

Anyway, interesting that we can jail her indefinitely for trying to protect her trees while Bertie walks free while trying to steal all our forests!
