Um.

Caelainn Hogan, author of Republic of Shame, writes:

Children called ‘illegitimate’ by the state often have a dash on their birth cert instead of a father’s name.

A woman sent to Tuam told me her boyfriend visited her in the institution but nuns refused to let him see his daughter. Their baby was taken from them.

This was and is a disgrace.

But, correct me if I’m wrong, isn’t it still permitted for a mother to register the birth of a child without including the father’s name? Or it was permitted until recently? That is/was wrong too.

I’m not condoning the action but I’ve heard it makes it easier to claim single parents allowance even if the father is on the scene.

When my son was born and this form was being filled out and handed over, I got chatting to some people and it’s almost always a negative reason to leave the fathers name blank. The father may not be known, the father doesn’t want to be acknowledged, the mother doesn’t want the father to be acknowledged etc. The person I was speaking to had seen them all and despaired for those children.

I agree with you. It’s always a negative reason. Which makes it more important that it is recorded. Even if it is recorded on a separate document.
