I’ve been called a ‘Dry-Robe W*an*er’ no less than 3 times this week (lovingly, by friends). Is that a thing now? Does having a Dry-Robe have some sort of status attached to it?!

As a northside swimmer who has been going daily with a small group since last March I feel I’ve earned the small comfort of a cleverly designed extra layer of warmth for the winter months!

I don’t know if it’s a thing or not but I do find them more prevalent around Sandycove area. Seem to be worn as a badge of honour or fashion statement far from the waters edge. Some even on the main st in Dun Laoghaire.

I’ve only started swimming in the sea since early October Janet but it’s only cold for the first 30 seconds or so and then it’s beautiful.

I have a bunch of friends at it, I just can’t hack it…lizard blood, I can barely get in the Irish sea in summer, I’m happy to mind the towels and hot tea

          Mad the lot of them.

But fair play, wouldn’t be for me though.

I used to scuba dive here and I eventually gave it up in Ireland – bloody freezing!!

A little closer to the old equator is more for me thanks.

totally agree repro-just back from a swim myself, open water is way go.
the govt has an unbelievable resource FREE-irelands waterways and coastline are a national treasure totally underutilized.
WTF is it with building closed or indoor p*ss pools to swim in-yuck.

          1. johnny

second pic is that a vaccine….
i decided once to visit the hot natural spings in colorado, the sulphur baths do wonders for bed sores,my one and only visit coincide with the weekly ‘day out’ for the nursing home residents – nothing like a few hours in hot springs with dementia patients with bed sores…
is that a flotation device or for training, is it like tying a surf board to your ankle to create drag while swimming ?
            don’t go anywhere without a dry robe….
great pictures nice work bodger.,really enjoying them making me homesick-not looking like any visits from states before year end.

give me a shout next time you’re over, johnny

we can have a swim off hawks cliff

even let you chase me up the steps, whip at my ass with your wet towel

be like your rugger days all over

          3. johnny

do you visit your irish portfolio often – have be extra careful bro that you don’t establish residency in ireland and ….oh my… have pay irish tax…

are you as they say a hands on landlord or do you have like such a LARGE portfolio that you have a team handling your tenants…

everything yes everything you read /watch in movies about rugger is true-when you play any sport at a highly competitive level…sadly the towel slapping days end quickly.

you probably covered the short here by shorting irish reits or builders, good for you …still fearful and scary days ahead for small time mom and pop landlords, living large overseas off backs hard working irish…rent strike anyone …first get hit hard are always offshore landlords

i’m sure your large mouth and big ass portfolio can take the hit bro….

“Prices in Dublin’s high-end residential property market are continuing to weaken as the pandemic lingers on, with a new report showing prime prices fell by 4.1 per cent in the year to September 2020.”

thanks for your concern, johnny, but I’m doing fine – more than fine, actually (minimal property exposure, mostly tech-centred s+p500 – amazon, paypal and nvidia the standout gems – as well clorox. so up a solid 50-60%. kicking myself for bailing on netflix though). but I do appreciate your concern.

          5. Charger Salmons

            AMZN.
            Ain’t they brilliant.
Horsed into ’em at the start of the first lockdown. What a no-brainer.

          6. Lilly

The flotation device is mainly for visibility, although you can use it to stay afloat as well if you get tired. I went for a swim last week and it was warmer in the water than out. Sets you up for the day, I recommend it.

          7. Johnny

So your like a stock pocket and a absentee landlord, living the dream – you trade daily then NY or in EU….
            What platform you like bro….
Don’t you have a sherry to discuss with that other faker charger….

Thanks Lilly I’m on beach now – Hamptons – no waves but I often lash the board on to ankle for extra work out, creates drag-was not sure if she was training or trying not drown …

          8. Brother Barnabas

not a landlord, johnny – nothing against the landlord game but it would be more for the likes of your south county “very prestigious” daddy. how’s he doing anyway ?

          9. V aka Frilly Keane

            That one is for visibility

There are ones with drag pockets
What swimmers in the stronger and longer range
Upwards of a k in open water
            Would call Pull
And used as a training device

            In pools
They’d use paddles and a pull bouy
or just a kick board between the legs

        1. GiggidyGoo

Whatever about the sea, swimming in rivers and lakes if a bit more dangerous, and there is an absence of salt, which aids flotation.

          1. ReproBertie

Swimming in lakes is grand. Growing up we spent our summers swimming in the lakes around Mullingar. Cold but crowded nonetheless.

  1. v AKA Frilly Keane

    Open water swimmer meself
    when I can

Today was grand and mild in fairness
the problem is not the water temperature
Definitely not on the East Coast
Its the getting in and out
    the Shivering etc

Not a Rub a Robe person myself
I’d be more a throw the fleecied on over myself
    One thing for sure
No matter what the conditions are here
I wear footies all the time
one incident with a weever fish is all you need lads

If I’m kayaking and messing I’d have a shorty / set of skins as well

      1. Paulus

Hah, why am I not surprised:
‘er indoors did the nudie cancer fund-raising event on a beach on Wicklow coast a few years back.
I volunteered to go along as driver/photographer/towel-holder/security (hah)…whatever.
        But NO!

        1. Janet, dreams of a steamed clootie

oh I heard about that, fair play, there’s nothing nicer than a nice breeze on the beastie
