Pundits Liam Brady (left) and Richie Sadlier during last night’s Republic of Ireland Vs Portugal World Cup Qualifier

Shay Connolly writes:

Am I right in imagining Laim Brady’s mindset to be that how could Stephen Kenny be any good, sure he only plied his trade in the League of Ireland. Sure one must come from one of our two colonisers, England or Rome to manage Eire.

After what you came up with Liamo, with your beloved Trapottoni, when I used to etch Xs and Os on my arse with a carving knife just to deflect from what I was watching, I find some real value in this Dunne Stores team. Are you looking for a Brown Thomas brand manager. Will a Dunne Stores or Pennys’ brand never be suffice “a Liam”.

“Should we extend the contract for Stiofán after the final match on Sunday,” the host asks.. “Nah,” says Liam not so Óg, and I paraphrase: “let’s hold off a bit until we see the friendly games coming up and see will the Dunne Stores bags rip. I mean it’s not like Tubridy or Joe Duffy where we have to secure their contracts in case CNN grab them. This is different. Sure where would Stiofan go, like. Longford Town?”

So for me, what Liam was harping on about in the post-match interview, when all wrapped up was that we have a Yellow Pack manager, that we could get beaten 6-1 by Germany at home (just like Trap) and we need a few more friendly games when we are blooding new players to decide where our future public money goes. What we need is to spend more public money on getting a Brown Thomas manager to manage a Yellow Pack team..

But I’m still not sure what Liam wants other than maybe a Brown Thomas Manager for a Dunne Stores team. Spell it out Liam and please don’t bore us to tears for over half an hour after we had earned a more than deserving draw against one of the World’s top teams.. Has the value of our TV licence investment not depreciated enough over the past number of years.

t’was very uncomfortable watching, a definite “atmosphere” afoot, they’d surely had a barney at some point off air

although Brady was a beautiful player he’s a horrible pundit…before we even consider the bias and conflict of interest…cannot understand for the life of me why RTÉ keep giving him the gig (LOL)… the intelligence that drips out of Sadler just amplifies his shortcomings when they’re in the same room

    1. scottser

liamo was just about the results, not about the ability or improvement of the squad. it took ritchie to point out that some of the lads only made their debuts in june and the pl players have only started a handful of games between them. dunno where brady’s expectations come from – he came across as a grumpy oul pox.

    2. Diddy

The intelligence that drips off sadlier…think about more deeply that mate. Sadlier is arts educated to MA level, Brady has his inter cert. sadlier has talked very elequently out of his ar$e many times over the years. Brady’s point stands. Kennys graph is going up. But could go down between now and June. Fools rush in

  2. GiggidyGoo

After all of those European and World Cup qualifications that Brady was involved in as a player, and likewise Dunphy, I’m sure they have a right to belittle those who haven’t yet. They’re entitled to get free rein on the Late Late tonight to lambaste Kenny. After all, the glory that Brady and Dunphy basked in, in their heyday counts for something surely.

Wasn’t it Liam Brady who accused Irish media of having agenda against Giovanni Trapattoni? Remember it was Brady who scouted for Trappatoni. Great wasn’t he?

      1. GiggidyGoo

How recent do you want to go?
        Trappatoni……………. Brian Kerr
        Played 64………………33
        Won 26………………….18
        Drew 22…………………11
        Lost 16……………………4
        Goals for 86…………….39
        Goals Against 64……….20
        Win Rate 40.6%……….. 55%

And Trappatoni’s (aided by Brady who eked out a role for himself on the management team ) teams
        – conceded an average of one goal per match
        – never beat a team that was ranked higher in the FIFA world rankings

When they took control of the Irish team it was ranked at 41
When they relinquished control of the Irish team it was ranked at 59 – Ireland’s lowest ranking ever up to then.

Sure – we need that type of success.

          1. GiggidyGoo

The statistics I mentioned give the real story. Dropping FIFA ranking places isn’t a sign of success.

          2. Poor oul divil

He had a dip at the end after an extended run of success. Spare me the League of Ireland bullcrap

          3. Poor oul divil too

Considered one of the greatest and most successful managers of all time, Trapattoni is highly regarded for his man-management, motivational and organisational abilities, as well as his tactical acumen

Trapattoni was most recently the manager of the Republic of Ireland national football team. He led them to their first European Championships in 24 years, enjoying a successful UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying campaign. This followed narrowly missing out on the 2010 FIFA World Cup, after his team were controversially knocked out by France.

          4. GiggidyGoo

            Sure isn’t wikipedia great?
for a copy and paste post.

He had to admit that the performance at those Euros was ‘terrible’ (his own word)
He didn’t make the world cup either. ‘Nearly’ never won the race.

The statistics don’t lie. Since he left, our rankings improved to the 30’s.

          5. Poor oul divil too

Scottser there was no argument being made for how enjoyable Traps teams were to watch. But in terms of executing a tactical plan and achieving a strong performance his teams were outstanding. I challenge Giggidy or any armchair pundit on here to find even one performance in recent years, even one, that exceeded the quality of the display in Paris. While we didn’t get the result, and indeed since have beaten both Germany and Italy, anyone who understands football and has eyes to see can look back at that game and understand that we played one of the best teams in the world off the park. That wasn’t an accident

          6. GiggidyGoo

So, you being an armchair pundit yourself, you’re basing your opinion on….one match. That’s some understanding of football.
            The statistics say it all.
No need to challenge me to find even one performance in recent times as you’ve just mentioned us defeating Germany, yourself.

It was awful watching Liam last night. He clearly had an agenda.

Richie though is an awful dose too though

  4. CapernosityandFunction

The FAI can’t afford anyone else so Stephen Kenny is staying and that is fine by me. He has completely transformed the Ireland team over the past 12 months. Last night there were players from League One besting played from Ligue 1 due the confidence he has instilled and the bravery he has encouraged. Chippy is engaging in a non-debate good for audience figures and social media buzz, nothing else.
