A Galway council Photoshop of a Coke Zero Bike Scheme rack at Spanish Arch
John Gallen writes:
There’s a controversy a grumbling out west over the Galway city bike scheme where they’re “removing bike racks from the city centre to make way for the Coke Zero Bike Share scheme”, which I think is completely daft and counter productive.
It’s typical ‘putting on a face’ to make the city look good and ignoring the actual logistics and function of what the scheme is supposed to be doing…

Batso! Real cyclists need bike racks too. And separated lanes. Onwards the separatists.
Cant have ppl parking their bikes for free when you can remove all the bike racks and charge them to RENT BIKES.
This is the way of the capitalist genius.

How is this a controversy?
They removed some bike racks to make way for a public transport scheme. Some activists jumped the gun and took to facebook. The city council are on record as saying the racks will be replaced soon ™
All very run of the mill.
You and your capitalism.
Monetize everything! Corporatize everything!
Is it public? Then stick a price on it and sell it back to the people who already owned it!
Go on out of that now.
Wave the Marxist Worker about all you want but if you think the Dublin/Galway/Coke Zero bikes scheme is a bad idea, then you’re a fool.
It’s a great idea, but removing bike racks to put these city bikes in and not have a committed to an allotted space for replacing the old ones, and then just saying ‘we’ll replace them’ is bollix, in fairness…. :)
+1
‘Trust, but verify’ with those council scrotes.
No I think it a great idea. I use the DB bikes all the time. Very socialist idea. Great success and very useful.
I just think taking existing bike racks up is a bit thick.
I’d make a brilliant capitalist. I have loads of ideas for turning free things into money making schemes. It’s just that I value a quality society over money and profits.
“the racks will be replaced soon ™”
Is that the same as ‘the cheque is in the post”??
They say they can squeeze in the city bike scheme rack and replace the current bike rack on Mainguard St…. yeah right. The bike rack is currently down beside The Dew Drop in, on the opposite end of the street to Eyre Sq.
They won’t physically be able to put both in that space without infringing on the traffic space required for delivery vans (the street is pedestrianised).
It’s total bull, imo :)
‘Inn’ not in……
I do like a nice rack.
Shame about your handle bar…
Its not about providing a service, its about making money. It wouldn’t surprise me if Dublin bikes hire scumbags to go around stealing bikes. Although they would probably turn their noses up at the idea of being paid to do something and would rather do it for fun.
Does anyone know if visiting Dubs with DB cards will be able to use these bikes?
