The move to rename the business [Irish Dairy Board]  Ór Nua, which means New Gold in Irish, marks a return to an Irish name tag as the organisation was formerly known as Bord Bainne.

Dairy Board to rebrand as Ór Nua (Independent.ie)

However…

An IDB spokesman however says that it will opt for OrNua not Ór Nua if the proposal is approved….

FIGHT!

Out with the old, in with the Ornua! Irish Dairy Board set for Irish language name change (DairyReporter)

Because “New Gold” really says Irish Dairy Board. And they can always sell the name to some bullion dealers, when they get sick of it.

This is a really annoying trend.

What’ll we rename Bord Gais/The Gas Board? Ervia. Which means nothing.

Children’s agency? Tusla. Means nothing in Irish or English.

Dairy Board? Ornua. Means nothing in Irish or English.

    Intreo – means nothing.

Solas – means light, despite not being inspector of lightbulbs.

I mean, why? Because it’s sounds better when you say “Ervia are claiming no responsibility for a swathe of dodgy gas installations”, whereas it’d be more suss if it was “Gas Board claim no responsibility for dodgy gas installations?”

I guess they had to change Bord Gais’ name when they’re no longer the only game in town. Not fair to have to compete against something known as THE Gas Board. Same with Telecom Eireann I suspect.

No that’s the mad part, it’s the part the state keeps that changed the name, the one with no competition who’s only job is to maintain the network – the new private company competing with the others is Bord Gais Energy – who’ve KEPT the name.

,,, and telecom eirean was changed in case the new york stock market thought it was Telecom Iran. True story.

Name changes are usually the forerunner to a market foray.

All part of the madness. Gas boiler gone? Call the experts Electric Ireland, seriously? No respect for our poor intelligence.
