“I believe there is an upper room feeling about the church in many parts of the world today. People cowering behind closed doors, afraid to express opinions, in case it will bring the wrath of the oppressors down on them, but if you focus on witnessing, you have a certain calm about outcomes. Most of the time.

“When I found myself, earlier this year, accused with other people of being a homophobe, for weeks on end, everywhere from our national parliament to our State broadcaster and it continued to the extent that my 15-year-old daughter turned to me and said, ‘Mammy are you safe? Is it safe for you to go out?’ – I had to hold on very tightly to witnessing, not winning.

And in a major irony, the article which sparked off the whole incident was about gay men in the priesthood. And I asked a rhetorical question which was that if every single priest were gay, if they were faithful to their vocation, and actively seeking to do the will of god, what would it matter?

It was a rhetorical question. And this article was what caused a very well-known drag queen to accuse me of homophobia.”

Iona Institute’s Irish Times columnist Breda O’Brien speaking at a Catholic conference in Madrid, Spain in September, 2014.

Rep writes:

“…31 mins. and 42 seconds in, Breda begins to talk about the Pantigate Affair…A very dishonest account of the whole affair….”

Oppressors? Catholics are oppressed in Ireland?

Gosh, what must catholic people in countries that AREN’T completely intertwined with the RCC be going through? It’s getting so you can only send your school to 92% of state schools if you value a sectarian education based on myth. WE WANT THOSE 8 PERCENT!

    Vile harridan.

That comment you deleted was referring to her neck thing. Cos, you know, Mikeyfex always hits hard to the core of the issues. I don’t even know what else it could have been construed as.

It’s the standard approach being used now by these right wing groups. They learned it at the knee of their paymasters here in the US.

You’re a white catholic in Ireland Breda. The only thing holding you’re being oppressed for is your uterus and you’re one of the people cheerleading that oppression. Get down off your cross for a while.

“……Accused with other people of being a homophobic, for weeks on end, everywhere from our national parliament to our State broadcaster ….” If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a, homophobic, right wing religious nut form Iona inc.

  5. My Left Testicle

    …being a homophobic…

-Does nobody love this woman enough to take her aside and discourage her from public speaking?

  6. Medium Sized C

This is mental. Oppressed by the media? Like the Irish Times who give her a column every odd week? Like the Rte or news talk who call her organisation in to ‘balance’ debate on anything the church might want a say in? Christ on a bike.

      Stop wreckin’ me head.
I did a Google Image search for Mary Barney.
I got a lot of results. A lot of Marys and a lot of Barneys.

      Nobody is called Mary Barney.
      Don’t be stupid.

The only Barney I know is Bernie, and she answers her door with a stick in her hand so I haven’t seen her in a long, long time.

      1. My Left Testicle

        PS.
Bernie Barney is probably not her real name, just the name we gave her when we were kids.
Her husband, Beernie Barney…well that was a different story.

        I’ve said too much already.
