What you may need to know:

1. Widower of taste Eli Roth rips off Michael Haneke’s Funny Games (1997).

2. Evan Webber (Keanu Reeves), an upstanding family man (and archimitect who draws real good) has some sexy time with two unhinged drifters and pays dearly.

3. There may well be a moral buried in this somewhere, but it’s so subtle and understated I’ll be damned if I can find it.

4. It’s hard to shake off the impression that this might have worked better as a comedy.

5. It’s nice to see Reeves getting some appreciation for John Wick (2014), a fine addition to the underserved doggie revenge genre. Also, Side by Side (2012), his documentary on digital vs film is most excellent.

6. When the sad day comes, that “Chocolate with SPRINKLES” line will be in Keanu’s in memoriam Oscar montage.

7. Broadsheet Prognosis: Enough of this. Give us Bill and Ted 3 now.

Release Date: June 26.

Oh dear. I guess the fact that Funny games was already only remade for ‘English – speaking audiences’ only recently didn’t seem to bother Roth at all. Shameless ripoff that, frankly, looks atrocious.

Oh come on now. The stranger comes to call concept wasn’t invented by Funny Games.
Yes this doesn’t look ground breaking in any way but still looks like it has a more touching love story than Twilight. Sorry couldn’t help myself

No, but the ‘two friends, seemingly amicable at first, arrive at a strangers house with intentions to terrorize’ was was definitely done most notably by Haneke, and it’s pretty clear to me that this movie is pretty shameless in its emulation of that formula. I don’t mind Roths movies all that much either really. But this is pretty blatant. And looks like shit

No but the home invasion by playing on peoples manners twist on it was, largely, or at least popularised through funny games. And the line about playing the game is a direct reference to Hanekes film so any comparison is valid in my mind (in fact I reckon thats exactly what they want).
But it seems to miss the ultimate horror of funny games which was the lack of any real motive….oh well. At least it’s got Keanu.

This looks hilarious. Don’t get the Funny Games comparison; more like Home Alone with less kids and more sex.
