Tipping degrades everyone. Hard working employees depending on the vagaries of randomers to make ends meet, not good. Neither are employers paying sh1t wages and depending on their staff to hustle customers after paying for a meal.

I hate the tipping ethos in the US. “Tip or you’re a p1ck”. In my experience (yrs in the US), often the service is terrible and they still expect a tip. I understand there is wage issues, no benefits etc etc, but I really don’t care. If you want a tip you should deserve it, not expect it.

That is a common feature on receipts in many parts of the US. 15% – 18% is the common level of tip. There’s no point getting narky about it, if you’re going to be sore about it then don’t travel there. Or self cater.
The local staff literally can’t afford to have smart-arse Irish tourists thinking they’re too clever to be tipping. The majority of salary is the tips.

3. I was a server in NYC a couple of years ago. Tips are usually “pooled” – shared between front servers, back servers (“bussers”), and kitchen staff, with each department getting a different percentage of the tip, despite the fact that everyone is working hard, and often on a *BASE WAGE* of $2 an hour. Or sometimes, nothing. So when you tip in NYC, you’re basically paying for your servers’ wages, not just throwing money at them that they don’t need. They desperately need it. For most of us, your tips are what’s paying our rent.
