I am announcing today that I will not be contesting next year’s European Parliament elections. My decision brings to an end to my role in active front line politics, something that has been a constant in my life over the last 25 years. pic.twitter.com/aRRBPBcGaW

Enough gravy in the tank
Waste of skin.
Dearie me – what is it about his record as an elected representative that you find so objectionable?
Unfortunately he’ll be on our TV screens more often as head of BPFI
FG MEP taking over from a forrner FF senator
that’s not to say Hayes isn’t the best person for the job – people are too quick to forget his eight years as a schoolteacher prior to becoming an expenses-accumulator
Ooooooh. Saucer of milk to Table Barnabas.
Having said that, I really am not a fan, so do please carry on.
This is what is wroing with Ireland, wring person wrong job.
Maybe he’s going back teaching
and close out another pension
is that mean?
Or is his return unsafe
He only scrope in ahead of Eamon Ryan the last time
and was still well short of the quota anyway
with himself, Eamon and Nessa having to sweat it out to for a good half dozen counts whille Sinn Lynn was off on the telly doing the interviews and blowing kisses
He is becoming CEO of The Banking and Payments Federation or Ireland.
well
I didn’t see that gig advertised
Pity
Same here. I’m probably as qualified as he is and I’m a lot taller, so there’s that.
Well I know I’m taller
and I know I’m definitely qualified for the gig
Incredible level of cronyism tho
int’it
Christ t’night we don’t stand a chance
I’d love to know who they’re running in Dublin
I’m thinking one of the Governement Independents might get lucky here
PR is really a pox. Here’s how his new employers see him.
“His numerous posts over the past decade, including Deputy Finance Minister in 2011, Vice President of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, and the EPP Vice Coordinator on the ECON Committee, make him the ideal candidate for the position. A natural leader, Brian has a track record of delivering on his commitments and overseeing the delivery of complex legislation and developing long-term relationships with key stakeholders, both at home
and abroad”
So its all about the time served. Not a single reference to any particular qualification*, skill or achievement.
*eminently punchable head notwithstanding
£€#$ the loss.
This is the way it goes now. Bat for certain interests, be rewarded for that batting with a cushy directorship.
Who does Mary Harney work for now?
He brought a profound sense of punchability to Irish politics.
Irish politics may never be this punchable again.
A sad day for the entire wanting to punch Bryan Hayes community..
Good to have you back C
good riddance
+ one.
Nobody will notice you gone, that’s how active you were in ‘front line politics’ you chancer.
Not much love fro Brian Hayes it seems. What is it about him that warrants this reaction? Is it personality alone? Or something else? I’m curious to know what attracts the opprobrium.
I have no strong opinion on him one way or another. However it annoys me that ex-politicians get appointed to roles such as these. I’m hoping the new role is private industry funded, it’s not some quango is it? However what annoys me more, is when they are appointed as head of charities a la Averil Power. I’m not sure how she merits the appointment or indeed the salary that goes with it.
Combination of his poo-ey condescending manner in political discourse and the most punchable face ever to grace Irish politics.
Was thinking the same thing – I don’t remember anything of his work as a TD or MEP, but weird how people on the internet have such visceral reactions to people they don’t actually know.
I do know him. SO NOW SO.
you went to his debs, didn’t you?
He probably promised a lot that night too, but ran off with the chocolates.
I’m not a Dub: you know that.
They’re ‘grads’ in Cork for boys. ‘Debs’ are only for the ladies.
i did know the first part
i did not know the second part
who did you bring to yours ?
A very nice guy who chose to wear a white tux jacket. #SadFace
What do MEPs do in practical terms for their constituencies and for their country incidentally?
The vast majority do nothing. But Luke Flanagan, I know some hate him, is an example of what mep’s should do.
Luke Flanagan seems to be more interested in stunts rather than actually getting legislation passed; still, he seems a nice fellow.
They do what our TDs are supposed to do: Legislate.
MEPs have the power to approve, amend or reject nearly all EU legislation. They hold the European Commission to account and can force it to resign. The European Parliament also decides on the EU budget and influences how EU money is spent.
I never knew if he was looking at me or someone behind me.
I did enjoy him in”Ferris Buellers Day” off though.
True to his principles he is privatising himself.
