This afternoon.
Catriona Perry (above left), Keelin Shanley (above right) and Eillen Dunne (pic 2) help unveil a cheap copy of BBC News/Sky News studio refurbishment and technical upgrade of RTÉ’s main News studio” at a cost €1.4 million.
Laura Fitzgerald writes:
The upgraded studio features a new video wall, 24m long and 3m high, spanning three sides of the studio. It utilises LED technology and a lighting system which is 70% more energy efficient.
The refurbishment has seen the introduction of new automated HD cameras, a new set design, additional presentation areas and changed opening graphics for the main news bulletins.
The new look RTÉ News also sees a reworking of the familiar RTÉ News theme music by Irish composer Ronan Hardiman, recorded by the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra.
An innovative and pleasing upgrade.
Or derivative, hi-tech, couch-based ‘news’ hub?
Only YOU can decide.

Well it’s a nice(?) retro touch to have the music performed by the NSO rather than just some samples tweaked by a random generator.
Will presenters get an increased couture allowance now that they’ll have to dress-up below the waist as well?
So they are going to read the news from the couch? Jesus, I don’t think that will work. It will look like those 3 goons on FoxNews, Fox and friends.
It’s so Dee can see some leg.
Reading the news from a couch…..next they’ll be in their dressing gowns!
All the most important news is given standing up
And the most vicious of Sky interviews are conducted with the camera on Kay Burley’s derrier.
Can’t stand up in a confession box…
Of course you can
It’s been a while. Apologies.
I’m glad I haven’t paid a licence fee in 15 years.
I robbed 40 quid out of a girls handbag at a concert one time ha ha. Me and you are the same. Rebel warriors
Why was she purporting to provide a service to you that you “didn’t want”? Ya cheeky divil
20yrs….ya lightweight… ; )
Was the studio done by same company doing the National Children’s Hospital?
With the money saved in energy bills and camera operator salaries this will pay for itself in no time.
for €4million, you’d think they’d afford a slinky to tie uop the cables under the couch… silly billies
Bodge this character here is using bad words!
RTE splurging €1m + on a news studio in 2019? Is this the same RTE which the BAI said urgently needed “an immediate increase of €30m, at a minimum” in funding last October? The same RTE that made a loss of €20m in 2016, €6m in 2017 and a rumoured €10m in 2018? The same RTE that pays Bryan Dobson €198,146 to make a hames of the morning radio programme a couple of times a week? Of course, the new studio design can’t hide the fact RTE’s domestic news is dominated by what a mediocre group of politicians is doing while foreign news coverage is laughable compared to CNN or BBC, or even Sky.
The big question for me is , are they happy? If that much money s being wasted , Id like to think someone is very happy, otherwise whats the point…
