I can’t understand why some people are getting bent out of shape over Rice declaring for England.
He was born there, he lives there, he only qualified to play for internationally for us because of his grandparents!
The biggest mistake he made was dragging the process out for so long. He could well get a rude awakening, he will have to be at the top of his game to even make the England squad, let alone the first team. He was practically guaranteed a position in the Irish squad.
Cú Chulainn
Maybe he just didn’t want to be bored to death playing for Ireland.
Junkface
Its the same pattern each time. The player is doing well in a club youth team, he’s not sure how good he can really be, but thinks that if he got some international team experience he would improve quicker. Or just raise his profile. As an English born kid, he realises its very, very tough to break into the England squad because they have a massive population to select players from. So he signs up for Ireland as a back up plan because he has Irish Grandparents.
A year or so pass and this player has really improved at his club level and maybe on the national team. He gets attention, his confidence is rising, he’s getting glowing reviews after matches. Suddenly he’s not sure if he should keep playing for Ireland because he could actually get into the England team now. They want him. So he jumps ship, Its a fairly human thing to do, but also a reflection on the lack of loyalty and meaning in most modern players, the money thrown at them is unbelievable. I kind of understand his actions (he’s very young), but its still cynical, and it will happen again.

I thought every 999 caller’s GPS location is shown to controllers. What the hell happened in this case?
Cian
No.
If you use your mobile (and your GPS is off) then your phone doesn’t know where it is.
If you use your mobile (and your GPS is on) then, while your phone does know where it is, that isn’t passed off as information as part of the phone call.
edalicious
I never knew this was a thing. Very good to know.

Privacy concerns aside (and there are many) but I have to admit, the Dublin Traffic overlay on Google Maps is amazing. I can sometimes look out the office window and see the traffic being completely in sync with what is shown on their map. Great to calculate the best route home.
milk teeth
You don’t need GPS on to locate a mobile – you can triangulate a call fairly well. Not sure they do this in ambulance HQ though.
Cian
Again, the people that can triangulate the cell is the network provider. Ambulance (emergency services) don’t have access to that data.
And I’m not sure how accurate triangulation actually is?
milk teeth
Under GSM protocol the provider is supposed to pass this information on.
SB
But I thought that Android & Apple had built in O.S. to all this overrides when an emergency call is being made, as opposed to a standard call. Might only work when calling 112, which I know for sure uses emergency frequencies to get a signal that are unavailable to other calls (including 999).
SB
*had built in O.S. overrides to all this
milk teeth
It doesn’t use emergency frequencies it just uses any mobile provider. Weirdly I think this also works without a sim card but I have never tried it.
The EU did implement some enhanced 112 thing where providers have to provide as much info as they have on the callers location but not sure how that works.

NCH- Stephen Donnelly is saying that Design fees had gone from €44m in 2017 to €71m by late 2018, an increase of some 60%.
Surely the design had to have been finalised before the construction even went to tender?
You would expect so. Unless there were changes to the design. Which would increase the design cost as well as having a knock-on change in the construction costs.
Eoin
Weren’t the design fees set as a % of the project cost, so, as the cost increased, so did the design fees? Maybe I have that wrong, but seem to recall something like this being said in the past week.

Fair play to Deputy Maureen O’Sullivan for challenging Coveney’s solo run when he was in the US last week and decided to recognise “Mr. Juan Guaidó, President of the democratically elected National Assembly” as the legitimate president of Venezuela.
The “President of the democratically elected National Assembly” sounds grand but is merely the speaker of the Venezuelan parliament. Guaido didn’t even contest the presidential elections last year.
Yesterday in the Dail
“Deputy Maureen O’Sullivan
A Cheann Comhairle, perhaps you as speaker here would like to proclaim yourself President at some point and expect the rest of Europe to recognise you.
An Ceann Comhairle
I am okay where I am.”
Coveney made a deliberate in-road into Ireland’s neutrality in a dispute that has nothing to do with us. And Leo’s response ” We did so [recognised the speaker of the Venezuelan parliament as the legitimate president] not on our own but alongside many other EU countries, including neutral ones, as well as the Lima Group comprising Canada and a large number of Latin American countries.”
Eoin
Deputy Mick Wallace wasn’t pulling any punches last night in the debate in the Dail about the scandalous cost of the National Childrens Hospital
” if we continue with this procurement and this contract process, this project will not be built for €1.7 billion nor will it be built for an extra €500 million. I guarantee that the costs will not stop at €2.2 billion because this process is tailor-made for BAM to reef us.”

‘Steadily, over the past five years, Colony Capital has made a bet that shows massive faith in Dublin. The company’s Dublin real estate portfolio is currently valued at over €3B, huge for a city area of around 1.3M people, and making it one of the biggest owners and developers in the Irish capital. Given it thinks Dublin could be running short of office space by 2021, it is not done yet.’
Founder and head of Colony,Tom Barrack, went off piste this week at Milken conf.
‘The president’s longtime friend drew swift rebukes in Washington this week by declaring it a mistake to judge Saudi Arabia for the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, the journalist dismembered inside one of the kingdom’s consulates last year. Barrack, who often appears on television to counter criticism of Trump’s statements and policies, quickly apologized for his own words.’
