This afternoon.
Via RTE News:
The EU will take a gradual approach to the question of how Ireland will have to comply with checks and controls along the Irish border in the event of a no-deal Brexit, RTÉ News understands.
Sources have portrayed a scenario where on day one of a no-deal Brexit, it will be acknowledged that Ireland is not fully in compliance with the obligations that come when a member state shares a border with a third country.
It is understood that for a period afterwards, the EU will assume a “partnership” role, allowing the Irish Government to apply the rules of the single market and customs union as best it can, while providing advice and support, whether technical or financial, over time.

Very interesting, and significant for the UK, @eurointelligence says that Ireland’s Phil Hogan is in line to be the EU’s new trade commissioner

Makes sense and takes the sting out of Bojo’s threats. The UK is unlikely to change standards and do big trade deals with third countries on day #1 which would undermine the single market. Businesses in the North will recognise the importance of frictionless trade with the Republic and EU beyond and won’t want to fupp that up. As Westminster diverges more from EU standards, the North will resist, seek special status or pursue reunification.
I don’t understand why the good friday agreement can’t prevail after the Brexit? Check the commercial vehicules not the people.
Because the monitoring of people to and from UK is as just important as trade? Either they monitor at the border- or they monitor at the NI airports and docks- one or the other.
Boris’ photo shoot with the police yesterday reminds me of this… https://images.app.goo.gl/skio9aZqQYXaRDBB6
As regards the above article – a ‘gradual approach’ is basically saying ‘ we will wing it ‘, ‘suck it and see’, ‘one day at a time’ – in other words, there is no real plan in place because no one has taken the time to look into the various scenarios over the past 2 years or so.
A bit tricky to make a plan when Britain keep shifting the goalposts every 3 months.
But they’ve had years to plan for all scenarios. By the looks of things, they will only plan once the scheisse hits the fan. That’s not good enough. Headlines saying Varadkar will tell Boris how things are going to be, give the wrong impression of having a handle on matters.
Hopefully the goings on in the UK will dump Boris out on his ear permanently. If that happens, I’m sure that some agreement will be made that’s different from the proposed one, or even article 50 gets revoked.
If every time the HP changed route the Irish government did likewise they would be in a similar situation where it would cost a lot of money and nothing else would ever get done.
As of today- the British Parliament has blocked no deal and instructed Johnson to go back to the EU and seek another extension- which the EU will grant because no deal will hurt them too- a week ago this turn of events would have been laughed at.
How in God’s name is anyone supposed to plan for such chaos?
You take a number of different scenarios and devise a plan for each.
How many different scenarios are there? Three? Four?
I am trained in both PERT and @RISK so registers are a food group- there is a big difference between managing a crisis and scary mary drama llama.
A crisis is what? Something that has lead, or is going to lead to an unstable situation.
23rd June, 2016, the Brexit Referendum was held. That’s more than three years ago. The result was ‘leave’. That was the crisis manifesting itself – three years ago.
In the intervening three years, and two months, the lackadaisical approach by FFG has been pretty disgusting. Very little preparations have been made. Still no information on border issues.
There’s now (unless there’s another extension) less than two months to go and we are none the wiser that we were over three years ago. Crisis? What crisis? The reaction of the Boys Varadkar and Co.
I don’t understand your first sentence – do you even?
You would prefer the second obviously. It is not going to happen dharling- you cannot deny geography- unless you are driving out of Fermanagh in which case have a good suspension.
Reply with something meaningful for once some old whatever.
Have you even got an approved loan from which you can buy your home?
It is a good response to the situation. It disarms the threat from BoJo. It takes the pressure off Ireland. Bojo is on the ropes. Of course, the British voter can give him a majority in an election.
I’m sure there is someone on YouTube with a plan
Maura what’s her name
Might be one with shiny sparkles, colourdy, things too. Pity your every contribution is such fluffyness
Thanks Giggidy – It amuses me every time you think I’m some sort of camp homosexual – really shows how scared you are of the modern world. There there grandpa
Grandma surely?
Seal clap for Barbara.
Is that what you took from that comment? I was basically pointing out how childish you are. Looks like you have the problem – seems to be your default ‘everyone is against me’.
Tsk tsk. Grow up.
soq. And links?
Schrödinger’s border. It won’t last.
Brexit Tans really don’t have the first forking clue about their own history do they?

Ushered in by good friend of Jimmy Savile and 40 separate allegation alleged(!!!) pedophile Ted Heath.
Your point?
Wikipedia = nonsense
Try looking at the sources that the Wikipedia entry is based on.
You’ll find that they are harder to blithely dismiss.
As you well know.
Your attempted deflection gets zero points – as you well know.
It seems you don’t know..
Here’s Ted’s chief whip overriding you..

What’s any of your guff got to do with the 1975 referendum?
Think carefully before you answer. Are you actually capable of addressing a point?
I doubt it – as well you know.
You still don’t get it do you.
Ted and his cabinet were all being blackmailed.

Yeah- hilarious- a subject which will not affect you at all- civil service is it?
Or maybe you are the sort who changes the executive car every year when people are made homeless?
Your comment is so far off the mark, it’s hilarious. Much funnier than my original comment, actually.
Wrong on all counts, btw.
