I was never one for paddywackery but I kinda miss the buzz of the whole earnest frivolous celebration , these long drawn out end of winter days really do need some light hearted relief

I have a question- why are off licenses being closed? Is there some legal licensing thing where a pub must be open so that an associated off license can operate? Given that this thing may last for months, would it not be sensible to separate the two?
Probably not popular with the vintners but some businesses may depend on such off sales to survive and given that off sales would be in high demand- it is quite bizarre that they are being forced to close at this point.

I still live in Belfast – (some) pubs are open – not many punters. The off-licences are flat-out. I have enough Guinness to self-quarantine for Patrick’s Day. I may have under-estimated my loo-roll reserve, however, for the after-math. Such is, the new normal. (I went a tad Wildean/Shavian on it there, a tad disappointing that the prompt was loo-roll).

The north’s licensing laws are different Shayna- an off license can be separate to a pub- I don’t think that is the case in the south. Also, home drinking is a much bigger thing in the north of course.
As I said, I don’t understand why, when on the grounds of public health pubs close, the off license associated with it cannot remain open- its just a shop after all.

Tis Ireland though – there’d be no social, or anti social distancing in the queue.

They are queuing 20 deep with no safe distances and wheeling trolley loads out of the supermarkets at the moment. Meanwhile off licenses beside pubs remain closed- even from a public health perspective, it makes no sense.

I feel your pain SOQ, in your supermarket sweep. It feels like a really bad Good Friday in Belfast – except the offies are still open.

Well apparently An Garda Síochána have requested that off-licence’s remain closed until 4pm today. Most are only opening only 4pm to 8pm- which is sensible.
You on the other hand- have the plastic paddy pups piling into the holylands eh?
Actually I stand corrected- off licenses can be separate from pubs here too, although not nearly as common.
“The Plastic Paddy Pups?” – Oh, you mean, students? There is no saint (Apologies, Patrick on your Day), nor scholar, nor student types on the streets of Belfast. It’s eerily quiet.

I am more a sexy men in skirts type myself- this is particularly poignant right now as some are stress cranked wondering what is going to happen.
Interesting story in The Examiner where Councillor Johnny Healy Rae is critical of the plans to relocate asylum seekers from Dublin to Cahersiveen in Kerry.
Perhaps uncle Michael could throw some light on these plans given the interest he declared in the hotel venue last year?
Reading those, his interest seems to be in a business set up to do with hotel reservations (maybe something like Booking.com with just a local aspect) and not the hotel itself. But if he has a commercial interest in the hotel he speaks with forked tongue.

If this emergency lasts a while we may some properties bought as air b and b investments come on the market. Could be an opportunity for housing charities to put a small dent in the homeless figures
Tis no Corrigan Brothers mind
Still, fair play to them, very slick

Tell ya what. Did yis see Boris on telly last night? Jeez he looked really shook up. As if the penny dropped that his name will now be inextricably linked to the deaths of hundreds if not thousands of his citizens because of decisions he made (a Sophie’s choice of a decision to be fair and yet to bear out). It’s tough at the top and he’s learning that lesson in the hardest of ways. One wonders if he regrets his ambitions…

Massive recruitment drive today for healthcare workers. A ‘your country needs you’ call to action.
I read elsewhere that some GPs are charging people who phone them to arrange a test. First question ‘your credit card no.? Surely not?

Just wait. Those with medical expertise in Direct Provision would be only too happy to prove their skills. Why not ask them? We’re all in this together.
a piece in the online Guardian suggests the Israeli Government wants to use anti terrorist technology to track citizens who tested positive via their mobile phones. I’m far from being a tech nerd but surely you could just leave your phone at home
Happy St Patrick’s day one and all.
