The Britney Spears story is shocking, redolent of the 1930s.
Rosette of Sirius
Speaking of… the new remake of Perry Mason – with Matthew Rhys – is a rather gritty and shocking portrayal of crime in LA in the 30s. It’s very good but not an easy watch.

The ‘sleb’ story of a wealthy pop star who can’t assert herself is shocking?
Meanwhile a rapist who subjected his young victims to horrendous abuse over 22 years gets a paltry five year sentence.
We’re obviously reading different papers.

You know, people can find the Britney story shocking and awful, while simultaneously acknowledging the abhorrence of the paedophile story. It doesn’t have to be one or the other.
Nuance, I think they call it.

Why do people always do this?
I watched the Britney doc on BBC last night. I had no idea what happened to her. How can it actually be legal? The USA has some bizarre laws, surely they removed her human rights. The poor woman, locked up for 12 years!

“Tony Holohan now seeking wider use of vaccines to ensure stockpiles don’t go to waste”
Absolute scurrilous criminality – what other way would you put it? There’s good reason that younger people have previously been advised not to take the Astrazeneca vaccine both here and elsewhere abroad due to an elevated risk of adverse reactions such as blood clots. But now Holohan is pushing for that recommendation to go by the wayside on the basis of completely hyped-up fearmongering about the “Delta variant” that doesn’t hold up to any proper scrutiny and also so that stock doesn’t go to waste. Why should young people be obliged to do so when the risk-to-benefit ratio is clearly not in their favour?
Seems to me that he’s a highly dangerous individual who has lost the run of himself 16 months down the line of having been granted unprecedented powers with apparently no one really able to keep him in check. History is full of cautionary tales of autocratic leaders who inflicted enormous suffering and individual sacrifice upon citizens through the supposed pursuit of “the greater good”.

Does Steve “f_lawless” Bannon suggest beheading someone maybe?

Really? And the hyperbole above is not at all playing the man? No fan of Holohan but he’s making recommendations, those making decisions are the government. Maybe tone down the hysteria and refocus on those implementing these policies. Also agree that spare vax should go to to countries where vax programs are falling.
I have to agree. Why subject young people to a risk just so stock doesn’t go to waste? Give the stock to other countries that need to vaccinate the over 60’s. Australia only gives AZ to over 60’s now. Not wishing to feed anti-vaxxers but more people have died from AZ than from Covid in Australia in 2021, 2 vs. 1. The one person arrived with the illness.
Hahaha good one
But of course you do hit the nail on the head
GiggidyGoo
Stockpiles? Thousands of over 60’s still waiting for their 2nd jab. Why stockpile and not use them?
There are no stockpiles.
Cian
The Indo article says “Up to 500,000 AZ vaccines may lie unused from August” which suggests that they haven’t received the vaccines yet.
SOQ
As with the case in point, when you see how these chancers are willing to take obvious risks with other people’s health, it’s not a huge step to imagine them going after the children. This is not Holohan’s first rodeo of course but last year’s ‘conspiracy theory’ from before any vaccines were announced, that the whole thing was all about needles in arms, is looking pretty real these days.
Came across this brilliant quote recently- If you are someone who is pushing for children to get vaccinated so that you can feel safe and that you are ok- you are what is wrong with humanity, not a virus.
goldenbrown
completely agree on this one f_lawless
or let me put it another way…if Holohan & state mechanisms in the western hemisphere are really bothered about wasting good vaccine let them send it to the poorer countries that need it as nobody gets out of this until everyone is vaccinated amirite?
millie bobby brownie
Exactly. I think this is one thing on which the Broadsheet lads can all agree.
That and the excellence of the Friday choons thread.

+1 … no wait, +2.
Bring on the choon-age !!
Cian
Personally, I would agree that they should be distributed to other countries that haven’t vaccinated their older population (although they haven’t arrived here yet).
if this is not an abuse of power, great link.
“Too often the media are fearful to name the culprits when they are judges. While he is innocent of the second case of alleged sexual assault, in the case of the Lithuanian woman the criminal law, impeachment, censure by the president of the district court and consideration by the judicial conduct committee of the Judicial Council seem all to be inappropriate or impossible remedies for varying reasons.
Justice in this case may best be advanced simply by the direction of public attention: naming the former judge.

Declan Kelly re-enforcing the drunken Paddy stereotype I see. How depressing.

How depressing for him to wake up the next day and realize that the drink has taken him and he is no longer a ‘Global Citizen’ !

Do Helicopters have seat belts?
Janet, dreams of an alternate universe
Actually seat belts in helicopters and airplanes aren’t really to keep you in the plane, rather, they are to keep you from losing control if turbulence happens to throw you against the ceiling and/or knock you out.
Should the buck stop with Commissioner Harris on 10,000 cancelled 999 calls? He took over in June 2018 and in the course of upgrading the Pulse system -to ensure that all crimes were investigated- that the new system retrieved the “cancelled” 999 calls in 2019/20.
Wouldnt it be strange if this didn’t happen before Commissioner Harris’s tenure?

Odd that the Czech tornado that razed a village hasn’t been reported on any RTE bulletin this morning. They featured an apartment building in Florida that collapsed but nothing on this:
If there is limited time is a bulletin and you can include one story – which do you choose:
– tornado in Czech ~5 dead Vs
– collapsed building in Florida with 160 missing
Actually yes, they are “competing” for airtime.

what a smelly bottom, hopefully he gets the help he needs.
“Kelly — who was Hillary Clinton’s US Special Economic Envoy to Northern Ireland from 2009 to 2011 — on Thursday offered a sobering apology to his staff, saying, “This incident has been a huge wake-up call for me. I immediately quit drinking and am undertaking ongoing counseling from healthcare professionals. I will never drink again.
“I have learned hard lessons and the work that needs to get done is on me and I am doing it right now. It will be an ongoing journey that will last the rest of my life.
“As many of you know I have temporarily reduced my work responsibilities so I have the time to focus on my health. Please know I will be back in a full capacity in September and remain as committed as ever to Teneo.”

Yes, they reported it on the website but not on the news bulletin. I heard both 8am and 9am, nothing.
Here’s some footage showing the extent of the damage.

They are saying 160 missing in Miami.
