A human perspective from The Guardian’s Luke Harding, currently reporting from Ukraine:
“Our basement in Kyiv now filling up with families with small children. The kids are holding colouring books. Heartbreaking”
Some early CNN reports, quoting Ukraine sources, mention ‘hundreds of casualties’. There is extremely graphic footage of some Ukraine military casualties but many social media sites are rapidly becoming flooded with misinformation – old footage of conflicts elsewhere, old training exercises etc. Rather selfishly there’s also a flood of Trump/Biden partisans continuing their dreary games of domestic political point scoring and apportioning ‘blame’ for what’s currently happening in Ukraine while mostly ignoring the ac tual plight of the people of Ukraine entirely.
On top of all that many sites are being flooded by the usual opportunists plugging records or products. Not sure how long Ukraine’s Internet will hold up (Ukraine officials say cyberattacks are ongoing), but if the flood of junk / fake reportage doesn’t subside on social media sites it may be wiser to stick to the (detested by many) mainstream media live feeds for a while.
NATO chiefs are holding a meeting at 8.30 this morning, presumably Biden will be patched into that.
The Russian attack appears to be widespread and severe, apparently initially directed against military infrastructure and resources and there are confirmed reports of Russian ground forces entering Ukraine territory. Russia’s MoD is claiming that all Ukrainian air defences have been ‘neutralised’

There’s some top quality ripe hogwash in the Irish Times about how the Ukraine crisis has thrust little ol’ Ireland into the high-level diplomatic arena at the UN.
Or Ireland’s temporary membership of the 15-nation ‘ inner sanctum ‘.
Wade through the guff about being ‘ in the court of global public opinion ‘ and a ‘ pebble in the shoe of larger nations ‘ and the reality is Russia’s abstention vote on the Security Council along with its ally China means the UN is meaningless and Ireland’s much-trumpeted diplomatic prowess in it about as threatening to Vlad as pig fart.
Still, it’s good swill for the boggers back home.
Ah here’s the person who resorts to using disgusting, vile language, like the ones on the corkrepublic site he was booted off. How’s it going in Cork, I mean, the Caribbean Ten Pull Terry/Charger Salmon/Admiral Nelson etc etc

It’s quite strange that the Irish Sun is happy to splash the identity of Diarmuid Rossa Phelan on its front page over the case of the trespasser shot on his land.
Yet the Indo coyly refers to him as a well-known legal professional, the Irish Times avoids mentioning he’s a lawyer at all and the Examiner, which normally avoids covering anything further north than Clonmel, simply says he’s “known in the legal profession “.
It’s indicative of the way the Irish media holds the Establishment with reverence and sycophancy whilst the British media cares little for reputation or position.
It’s also why the Irish Daily Mail has led the critical questioning of NPHET and the goverment’s handling of Covid from the start of the pandemic whilst the Irish media simply rolled over and waited for its tummy to be tickled.
It’s also how politicians and business continue to get away with incompetence and corruption on a grand scale.
They’re laughing at you.

For someone who constantly bashes The Irish Times old boy, you seem to be an avid reader of it.

Excellent piece in Gript about the explosion of NGOs in Ireland.
In 2007, there were 45,000 people employed in 19,000 community and other NGOs with a turnover of €2.5 billion.
Now there are more than 165,000 people employed, and turnover is over €14 billion.
€6 billion in state funding was distributed to NGOs in 2020 alone.
Once again, proper journalism and questions being asked that the MSM religiously avoid for fear of biting the hand that feeds it.

Irish Media already getting into gear to defend Diarmuid Rossa Phelan, clearly he has some powerful buddies.
So far I have read that the victim had a lurcher and according the Independent here:
”The men said their friend’s lurcher dog, historically associated with poaching but in modern times also a companion dog, was shot.” So, potentially up to no good.
And I see on the front of the Irish Scum a source says ”it’s believe the shooting was totally accidental.”
But then I read that the man was shot THREE times. Once is accidental, twice. thrice?
Unless of course the gun was an auto or semi auto which I am pretty sure are not legal?
Lilly
RTE radio 1 also said it was an accident. Struck me as odd alright. They didn’t name names.

Trudeau’s climb down is just an attempt by the west to tidy the optics so they can go full ‘retard’ on evil Vlad’s ‘global power grab’.

It was expected that the Senate would vote it down in which case, the about turn was to save face. There is still issues surrounding some fintech legislation apparently, but I am not sure what they are.

The programme is to include the allegations that X is a dangerous extremist and misogynist who physically and psychologically abused two former female partners; that X is also a covert human intelligence source (variously referred to as a “CHIS” or an “agent”) for the Security Service (“MI5”); that X told one of these women that he worked for MI5 in order to terrorise and control her; and that MI5 should have known about X’s behaviour and realised that it was inappropriate to use him as a CHIS. The BBC says that the broadcast of this story, and the identification of X by name, is in the public interest…”
