St. James Infirmary Blues

This morning/afternoon.

James Street, Dublin 8

Medical scientists on strike outside St. James’s Hospital as part of a nationwide day of industrial action. The Medical Laboratory Scientists Association (MLSA) has said that no approach has been made by the HSE or Department of Health since last week’s strike as they seek resolution for a two-decade pay dispute.

I mean no disrespect to those looking for fairness and equity in their jobs, nor to in any way disrespect those awaiting important results and procedures dependent on them. Indeed my own life has been made certainly more comfortable and quite possibly saved by the efforts of these wonderful professionals, down through the years.

But I was supposed to give a wee sample to my GP this morning, and that has been put off for now. As the issue is not urgent, I am actually relieved as the idea of handing over small vials of dubious heritage to the receptionist, who is well used to this, just strikes me as embarrassing. Now, I hope they prioritise and put me at the back of the queue when they catch up with the important tests.

A friend of mine who had cancer is going for his yearly tests on Thursday
I think of my friend who pays his taxes to keep them employed who might miss a discovery of the cancer returning

So think of that as you strike away for unlike me if I go on strike my actions will not lead to the actual death of a human because of tests being cancelled due to me going on strike
If they need more money why not get a part time job to top up their take home pay like the rest of us
I did that when I was trying to pay a mortgage
5 day week then a part time job working another 20 hours on top of my 40 hour week
