What you may need to know

1. It’s a new comic book adaptation from Matthew Vaughan, who did
Kick-Ass (2010) and X-Men: First Class (2011).

2. @ 1’17, or thereabouts. It’s Mark Hamill. Seriously. Hamill cameos in
the original comic as himself. But doesn’t play himself in the movie.
Confused?

3. We can’t quite believe that Michael Caine and Samuel L. Jackson have
never starred in the same movie before. They’ve already done another.
NB: This should offer a handy shortcut next time you play Six Degrees
Of Kevin Bacon.

4. Here‘s a shot by shot breakdown, for geeks.

5. Bonus Point for attempting to make The Doors cool again.

6. Broadsheet Prognosis: The Avengers (1960s TV)  meets The Avengers (2012)

Release Date: October

2. It stars Matt Smith, Joan from Mad Men and Saoirse Ronan.

3. It just premiered at Cannes. To a rather mixed reaction.

What you may need to know:

1. This trailer is NSFW-ish.

2. It’s the new David Cronenberg movie. He did Scanners (1981), The Fly (1986), Crash (1996) and A History Of Violence (2005). The masterpiece? That’d be Videodrome (1983).

3.
It stars Julianne Moore, John Cusack and Robert Pattinson, star of Cronenberg’s earlier Cosmopolis (2012).

4. We still believe in John Cusack. Even if he doesn’t. We’re enjoying his awkward cinematic mid-life crisis, even if it involves having to sit through a lot of crap b-movies. That said, who doesn’t love Hot Tub Time Machine (2012)?

5. The critics are in favour.

6. Broadsheet Prognosis: The Player (1992) meets Naked Lunch (1991).

Release Date: TBC

What you may need to know:

1. It’s the new movie from Terry McMahon, director of the controversial Charlie Casanova (2011).

2. It premiered at the South X Southwest festival in Austin earlier this year.

3. We’re hearing good things.

4. McMahon enjoyed an entertaining creative discourse with Irish Times critic Donald Clarke over Charlie Casanova – we’re looking forward to Donald’s thoughts on this one.

5. In an interview with Clarke in today’s Times, Frank director Lenny Abrahamson suggests that Ireland makes too many feature films. So what do YOU think?

What you may need to know

1. It’s a rom-com spoof, starring Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler.

2. We do love Rudd, a man who’s walked any from any amount of duds still
smelling of Sex Panther.

3. We also love Poehler. She’s in Parks And Recreation, and brought the
SUBLIME Broad City to TV.

4. It’s directed by the guy who did Hot Wet American Summer (2001) and Role Models (2008).

5. And it’s got Ken Marino in it. We’ll watch anything with Marino.

What you may need to know.

1. Sure Fassbender’s teeth looked amazing on the Late Late on Friday, but Brendan Gleeson is still our greatest movie star. He’s worked with Spielberg, Scorsese, Scott (Ridley), Boyle (Danny) and The Smurfs, for starters. He’s Mad Eye Moody. And his sons are a new wave of Irish talent unto themselves.

2. So… what did we all think of Calvary (2013) then?

3. Gleeson and John Martin McDonagh are already at work on the third chapter of their ‘Glorified Suicide’ trilogy. Next time out, he’s playing a paraplegic.

4. The Grand Seduction is a Canadian film, co-starring Taylor Kitch, who was supposed to be The Next Big Thing, then starred in back-to-back bombs Battleship (2012) AND John Carter (2012). Still, we loved him in telly’s Friday Night Lights.

5. Broadsheet Prognosis: Always Bet On Brendan.
