Blame It On Lehman: “The Last Refuge Of The Deluded Scoundrel”

at

Peter Nyberg interviewed 140 individuals who had some involvement or other in the debacle.

So did any of them express remorse for their role in the country’s downfall?

“There was a wide difference of opinions among people — some people were quite devastated by what had happened,” he said.

But not everyone. No siree.

“There were also people who still thought that everything would’ve been fine if just Lehman wouldn’t have happened,” he added.

There it was again, the good old trusty Lehman Brothers Defence, beloved of two former finance ministers and Taoisigh Bertie Ahern and Brian Cowen.

It was all so easy to blame our woes on the fall of Lehman Brothers and that other faithful mantra of Ireland being “a small open economy”.

Both are true, but as an excuse for the unholy mess we’re in, Lehman Brothers was the last refuge of the deluded scoundrel.
